    Now Westlin Winds
    (Robert Burns [1783], arrang. J. Ferguson, Jan. 2014)
    Capo @ 1, 84 bpm
    Intro: D G D A D G A G A
    V1.
    D G D A
    Now westlin winds and slaught'ring guns
    D G A D
    bring Autumn's pleasant weather.
    D G D A
    The moorcock springs on whirring wings
    D G A D
    amang the blooming heather.
    D G
    Now waving grain, wide o'er the plain,
    D A
    delights the weary farmer.
    D G D A
    The moon shines bright, when I rove at night,
    D G A D
    to muse upon my charmer.
    Interlude: D G D A D G A G A
    V2.
    The partridge loves the fruitful fells;
    the plover loves the mountains.
    The woodcock haunts the lanely dells;
    the soaring hern, the fountains.
    Thro' lofty groves the cushat roves,
    the path of man to shun it.
    The hazel bush o'erhangs the thrush,
    the spreading thorn, the linnet.
    V3.
    Thus ev'ry kind their pleasure find,
    the savage and the tender.
    Some social join and leagues combine;
    some solitary wander.
    Avaunt, away! the cruel sway,
    tyrannic man's dominion:
    the huntsman's joy, the murd'ring cry,
    the flutt'ring, gory pinion!
    V4.
    But, Peggy dear, the ev'ning's clear;
    thick flies the skimming swallow.
    The sky is blue, the fields in view,
    all fading-green and yellow.
    Come, let us stray our gladsome way
    and view the charms of Nature.
    The rustling corn, the fruited thorn,
    and ev'ry happy creature.
    V5.
    We'll gently walk, and sweetly talk,
    ‘til silent moon shine clearly.
    I'll grasp thy waist, and, fondly prest,
    swear how I love thee dearly.
    Not vernal show'rs to budding flow'rs,
    not Autumn tae the farmer,
    as dear can be as thou tae me,
    my fair, my lovely charmer!
    As dear can be as thou tae me,
    my fair, my lovely charmer!

    Thank you so much for this. I love this song. You have explained how to play it so well. You also have a wonderful voice. It is amazing how something so beautiful is comprised of only three chords. But then all of life is just four nucleotides!! Simplicity is best indeed.

    2 important points Jesse ;
    1. Its Rabbie Burns - its like Auld Lang Syne - some say Old Lang Syne its just not right.
    2. Fingerpicking should not have to be anchored - in fact anchoring anything on the top of the guitar will dampen the sound by stopping the top from vibrating. The picking hand should be able to move along the length of the strings at anytime.
    Check out the lyrics on the Rabbie Burns web sites for some words which are a little different from yours.
    Great lesson and feel for the song.

    this sounds like the same as "when you say nothing at all" by keith whitley and made famous by alison krauss.
