- What do you do when you're stuck with an amp with no personality? Pedals! Specifically, this SD-2 Dual OverDrive. With its own Crunch and Lead channels, plus the ability to toggle between them easily from the floor, this pedal has been a (very) dirty little secret for quite a while now. Find out why right here.

Good stuff. You've pretty quickly become one of the best demo channels on UA-cam. Also, very good taste in guitars...
Thank you so much Randy. I did kind of go wild with different guitars on this one, but they're my go-to's at the moment, that's for sure.
I keep thinking you're the security guard at JHS, and they haven't found out yet, great content, thanks!
Hahaha, that would make things a whole lot easier! I love it, thank you so much, I appreciate it
What I love about this guys videos is how he likes to further dive into possibilites and experimentaion and comparisons and yet still giving plenty of useful insight on the pedal at hand. Bravo!
Thanks!
My fav pedal ever, I loved it from the first day I got it 20 years ago. The only one I am never ever gonna give away!
It really has something special about it that you don't hear in many modern pedals (at least the mass-produced ones)
I remember only having SD2 and DD3 on band practice. Such underrated pedal
Props for comparing to both the Turbo Overdrive and Turbo Distortion. Great demo.
You know how I love my Turbo pedals
Much props for the AB testing! Think you nailed the comparison matching it with the two pedals you did. Very cool video, and fun jams 🤘😌🎸 Second one had some John Cougar Mellencamp vibes 🙂
I have one and just started using it again,it’s an awesome pedal 😊
You do a great job with these vids. Hopefully you hear that often enough. 😁 I love that shot of all your Boss OD/Dist pedals. Also, thank you for scrutinizing the schematics. It addressed my key questions and thus proved super helpful (and satisfying). All the best, brother. If you’re ever on Oahu and want to play with some pedals/guitars/amps, hit me up. 🤙
Thanks!!! I hope to make it out some day
I was hoping you were going to get this one out at some stage. Very cool 😎
I used to have one of these! (He said for every boss dirt pedal demo he has ever seen….) if I recall correctly, it’s one of the rare boss stomps to use led clipping, which right there would explain why it’s a bit different from the others.
I have one of these. Bought it used for around 10 Euros. Easily the best 10 Euros I've ever spent on a guitar pedal.
Great video, my dear
I love this pedal!
Definitely a good one
That first jam reminded me of David Bowie's "The Width of a Circle". Awesome!
Ooh, I’ll have to give that one a listen. Just watched The Prestige yesterday and reminded me that I need to listen to more Bowie.
A brilliant pedal ! I gave mine a JHS mod. to make it a tad warmer on the "Green" mode. I think Boss missed it by a nose hair, however. All that was needed is the "Red" mode to duplicate the "Green" mode and just allow for more gain by cranking the pot on the red side. Instead of having two pedals in one, you' have a dual mode. All in all, an excellent design and very rugged.
Oh wow. Between this and the “orange mode” I really need to revisit this pedal.
I think this was the first guitar pedal I ever saw in person, pretty sure this is the one my friend/neighbor had, then I got my own DS-1, I'm grabbing one of these asap
Like your demos, very informative… I would love to hear your say about distortion stacking….
Thanks for the demo man, I have the SD-1 & I think it's kind of underrated too. (BTW I was watching the digital jelly fish & I dig um)
SD-1 is just an amazing pedal that people write off because it's inexpensive. Kudos to Boss for not trying to make it seem more desirable by making it $200. The jellyfish are one of my favorite home office purchases, highly recommend them.
SD1 is definitely not underrated! Popular boost alternative to Tube Screamers
Hey buddy! Just came across this channel looking for info on sd2..great job man..killer collection behind you and I really enjoyed the thorough breakdown man.. checking your channel out and subscribed for more 😂..can't wait to check out the rest of your stuff 🤘😁🎸🎶
Thank you so much Eric! I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to making more
@@StompboxBreakdown very welcome..I'll be watching for sure..good stuff
nice one
Good video
Informative
Thanks
My pleasure
Great video! Actually prefer it to my angry driver.. the lead mode cuts better love than the angry charlie. Also stacks very well after a ts and doesn’t collapse 👍
That Lead circuit kinda looks like the HM-2 circuit, but has an additional gain stage in the clipping section where the hard and soft clippers are separated.
Awesome vid. Since you're uncomfy with dirtboxes I have lots of similar stories with the OS-2. Would love to hear your opinion and story. Why there is no OS-1? Didn't know you accept requests. Please do mine. :)
Good timing! I saw one of these used and was wondering what it was. Thanks for posting these videos. It gives a lot of context on these stomp boxes... I also saw the HM-3 Hyper Metal. Have you tried that one? I didn't really know about it, but it sounds like it has a different kind of EQ curve.
Glad I could be of service! From a collectibility perspective, I think it's something they're unlikely to make again, since it just uses so much real estate on the board. Plus, it's just got that thick saturation that you don't hear from a pedal all that often.
I have an HM-3 but I don't think I've ever actually tried it out. Based on the demos, it sounds pretty thick, maybe a more modern metal amp than the HM-2 Also, pretty rare that HYPER is in all caps on it, but Metal is spelled with only the capital M. I like stuff like that.
I have this one and I used it on my bass guitar
Excelente vídeo, tenho um Boss SD-2 também, gostaria de fazer uma modificação para deixar ele um pouco menos médio porque eu uso somado a outros pedais. Existe a possibilidade?
Great demo, Love the Dual Overdrive. what's the name of your jellyfish tank? Very cool!
Thank you! So, there's actually two in there, but the second one is behind me and hard to see (I should move it). The one on the left is typically sold by Sharper Image, search for "Fantasy Jellyfish Aquarium". The other one I grabbed from Amazon, just search on Jellyfish Lava Lamp, there's quite a few of them. You just fill them with distilled water and a little bit of dish soap, poke the plastic jellyfish until there are no bubbles in them, and they pretty much take care of themselves. A great alternative to an actual aquarium or lava lamp.
So, so good! Love the, perhaps unintentional, Monty Python reference! That is a super duper pedal for sure.
Can you build a pedal board entirely from Boss pedals?
Definitely can! Good enough for Prince, good enough for me
An all EHX board would also rock.
I'm guessing the ds2 are a more affordable option. It's that lead sound that sold it for me.
I don’t think it is the overdrive version of the turbo distortion. To me it is a lot more… two pedals in one like the jb2. But what do I know…
You’re right, overdrive pedals are difficult to demo. You’ve done some great research. Does each episode cost you a new t-shirt?
Thank you! I have a lot of black tshirts, but I did before the channel, too.
So I see the Stewart’s Shops hat. Are you in New York State? I’m around Syracuse. Stewart’s are everywhere.
Down by Kingston, in the Hudson Valley. Stewart’s ice cream is amazing
Could you make a video about the secret SD2 mode, the "yellow mode" and how it works and sounds?
Interesting, hadn’t heard about it before. I’ll look into it.
@@StompboxBreakdown Please do! It looks like it's possible to use both drives at the same time!
So what's the difference between the dual overdrive and the turbo overdrive other than a set of controls for each mode I bet the lead and turbo mode are the same as well either way it's a rad pedal and a great precursor to the angry driver
I think the Turbo Overdrive is more about giving us a sort of "angry mode" which is just a different voicing of the base overdrive (similar to the DS-2) where this is going to great lengths to give us two completely different circuits. It still falls into my own same mental category of "compact Boss pedals with a remote jack input", though.
You're spot on with it being a precursor to the Angry Driver, though. That pedal is so great.
The Turbo is successor to the OD-1, the Dual is the successor to the SD-1
2:50 i swear that neither of the two circuits actually sounds like the SD-1. is the lead supposed to be an SD-1? the "crunch" definitely sounds different just like you noted at 3:50
It's a common misconception, but neither is the SD-1 circuit.
Chance we could see the EHX Super Ego?? Thanks!
Looks cool, I’ll see what I can do
Aaaaand Superego+ is on the way :)
@@StompboxBreakdown Wooooo, let's go👏🏼👏🏼.
17 days? Hey, I don't mean to rain on your parade but we're not gonna last seventeen hours!
I see a black finger in the back, would'nt it be right to compare it with the white?
It’s actually a Tube Zipper
@@StompboxBreakdown
Doh! Anyway, interesting also.
Those EH pedals look overkill, i wonder if they justify the real estate taken🤔
They certainly are interesting. My take is that if an effect does exactly what you need, it doesn’t matter how much space it takes up. I’ll make a second board for it. But that Tube Zipper is pretty finicky and hard to dial in ahead of time. I think it’s mostly a studio tool, not something I’d attempt to use live.
What’s your opinions of your Super Feedbacker?
As a distortion pedal, it's pretty alright. Nothing special, but not horrible. I really like the way it sustains the note, though I wish it trailed off after letting go of the pedal. Instead, it drops out suddenly, which very much spoils the illusion.
@@StompboxBreakdown Thanks! I use a Digitech Freqout which behaves the way it seems you wish the Feedbacker did. Someone local to me is selling the “lawsuit” version Super Distortion Feedbacker and I was wondering if it was worth it. Seems not I guess.
I did not read all 70 comments, but am I the only fool who noticed you put the name of the wrong pedal in the title?
Wow. Yeah, nobody else caught that. Fixing now. Thanks.
That being said… Superior video.
fiy the only thing that ds1 and ds2 have in common is the letters of the name. ds2 has a total different schematic, nothing close to ds1.
