dude respect please
Am a newbee in calf training and literally in 2 months my calves blew up simply training them twice a week . I use to think I have "BAD GENETICS" too. Thanks for the advice sir
The nice thing about calve Machines at the gym is they are always available. Thank you Mr. Meadow for the workout. I contributed recent calve gains to your information. Making my weak points my strong points.
This made my day so true 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
John whatever happened to the calve challenge from about a month ago?
Just discovered that this gentleman has past on that’s a loss his videos and presentation are top tier seemed like a genuine man I’m sure he’s missed but his videos will live on
He is the mr. Rogers of weight lifting, he voice is comforting... thanks Mr. Meadows
I love waking up watching your videos while I get ready. Feels like I'm starting off the day right .
Best results for my calves were when I started doing them on the stairs with a big stretch and holding a heavy ass weight in one hand. Supper setting with chest allows me to get a ton of volume across a workout.
You can do tibia raises on the seated calf machine, just put your heel on the platform not your toes
Yes they are excellent as well !
Thanks great tip
Thank you so much for the advice and technique John, much appreciated 👍
The minute I started watching your videos and finally getting that genetics thing out my head I started gaining calves. It works. As you say, Full stretch is the key
Yes, I only knew a few ways of working calves. Thanks for another excellent video.
Great video as always John
Pump, pump, pump them up! They heal quickly, every other day they will grow and grow! Great video!
I really like that John has always encouraged the importance of leg training, and this video and info for calves is fantastic. Not to mention, there is something amazing that happens whenever you maintain a good leg workout in your training; strength and flexibility in the hips, legs and knees is enhanced tremendously. At 53, my legs feel better than they ever did when I was in my 20's, or in my teens for that matter. I feel like my chances for leg injuries are greatly diminished because the connective tissue surrounding my joints has gotten so much stronger and more elastic from my leg workouts. I think the low volume with frequency format is great for calves or any muscle that gets used often but not stretched as much. The stretching allows for the blood to engorge the muscle and transport the needed nutrients for growth. Thanks guys!!
Excellent video John.
Best videos in Bodybuilding ,your a great trainer.thank you
High Reps, High Weight calves-raises squad checking in with my summer gym shorts hitting 4 plates mega shredders
Always the best instruction, from you John,,,still sadly missed,,
Great information, thanks mountain dog
This was excelente job keep showing we love your experience again thanks so much John 💪🏻👍
God bless you for all of your great work my brother.
Love your content JOHN!
I'm going to sit in that stretch as well as work them more frequently. I'll start with twice a week. I love doing calves, so no prob with this. Thanks!
What helps me the most with calf training is " every 10 reps, 10 sec. hold" on bodyweight calve raises I learned on your channel about a year ago! I been doing them religiously and always set them on fire!! I worked up to 50 reps. The holds do help rush the blood into them! Thanks!
Great video as always. Always good to see old faces again on the channel. When is the ‘make your own’ series Pull workout coming out? I know I takes a lot of time to make but I’m sure that many of us would benefit from it. Loving the content, keep going!
Big John Meadows
Casual follower just popping by to say hope you're doing well and staying healthy sir!

Man his tips works, my soreness on calfs def improved.
Another good one John 👍
THANKS JOHN, EXCELLENT VIDEO , WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW 👍💪🙏❤
You are the greatest trainer in the world!!!
My calf's have grow here in Hong Kong! I've been doing a lot of tibialis anterior muscle with 45 lbs weight. I do not count, I just go until I'm only move an inch, but I like the idea of stretching after the lift!
Been waiting for this!😭🥴
Seeing meadows makes me happy, he seems like he really enjoys the gym & his life in general
Hi John good selection of exercises as I'm a hometrainer most of the time a good replacement for the toe press is the donkey calf raise as these two exercises emphasize the stretch position better than other exercises for me personally normally paired up with toes pointed lying leg curl stay safe and healthy
Good information
Hi John, will you do the "build your own workout" for legs?
Thanks 🙏🏽
thank you, John! I do appreciate the information a lot. rest in peace big dog
The legend 🙌
3:33 What’s Mark Henry Doing In here ?
Your way of explaining is great ,Great Video John !
Amazing video John!
I know a guy whos job is walking and biking 4 days a week for 6-8 hours for his job, he never trains calves/workin out but his calves are thicker than his upperlegs! That always excites me😎
Biking is a TERRIBLE calf workout I bike all the time and it doesnt do shit.
I'm so glad this video came through!! Can't wait to get started on blasting my calves!
Have you done a video on the “meadows row” in a while?
Thoughts on also adding peroneal work to push even more blood below the knee?? Thanks JM
John, would you recommended Odin Force or Grandmaster for someone wrapping up 12 weeks of Warlock (did the first block twice). Looking to buy and start one today after a few days off. Love the content (as usual).
RiP legend
Friends, appreciate my training, I will be glad for your support. Thank you. All health.👍😀
I do standing toe raises and I have a Nautilus seated calf raise machine that I use every week. My calves are showing improvement after a little over 3 years of consistent training. I gotta say, they were stubborn. I put as much emphasis on calves as I do any other body part. I try to train everything evenly.
Just in time for leg day👑😁
Rest in peace Mr. Meadows
@mountaindog1 I love your calve workouts and I have followed them training in frequency but I still can’t get mine to grow no matter what I do. Any advice? I’m 6 foot 3 to put it into perspective so I started out with super small calves
Hi John, whats your opinion on adding straight knees calf jumps for some really high twitch action more towards the end of calf workouts, at least for me it feels like it fries the living daylight out of the outher heads of my calfs
Did one round today . Going to do two rounds on wed or thurs and three rounds Saturday or Sunday
mountaindog..🙏
Perfect, because I'm still training calves 5 days a week 😂
@@charliejxhn I measured 18.5 when I started a little over a month ago. It was actually a challenge that John had put together last month. Probably going to measure at the end of the week.
@@ryanhoward8549 awesome good job! Wishing you the best for your gains.
I also do calfs 5 times per week (including tibia raises) and have been doing it for well over a year. They are like forearms, hard to exhaust and they take really long time to grow. The past couple of weeks i’ve actually thought to myself ”geez, i have huge calfs!” and as i wrote, well over a year and now i start to see some real results. Keep consistent with those calfs and forearms!! :-) best wishes from sweden
@@philen I am 6'3 and for a better part of a decade I was 360 lbs so my calves always got worked out lol. Dropped down to around 290 now and they have some definition finally. Best wishes to you as well.
@@AquaLady153 thank you
john how do you fit calves into your workout split?
How to do this workout for asymmetric legs, please?
God, thank you for giving me great genetics in my calves. Doing chest while watching this 😂
Beast mode activated
John, *I have a question for you*
Are there more bodyparts in your opinion that respond well with a stretching part and/or higher reps and higher frequency? I know its different for people, but in general?
I stopped training my calves when I was 21 as they where outgrowing my arms! At the time I had 19 inch calfs and 18 inch arms lol. All I ever did was standing calf machine raises supersetted with the pressing movement you are doing at the start of the vid. 4 sets each, thats all, blown up like a balloon.
Alright! Chris zaino! 👍👍
I dont have a calve raise machine, i just tie a band with some dumbells on me and lift.
Haha.. you know It 🙌🏼💪🏼
Even though I have none of that equipment thank you for the motivation leg day this afternoon. 60lb. sandbag for standing, 110lbs. of weight on single leg seated and found that single leg donkey supporting with hand on bench is pretty effective.
It's on now. I got cybex seated calf machine off marketplace. Did so many I got charlie horses in my foot arches.
Tibialis raises are great when you are waiting for people to finish texting while they are sitting on a machine you want.
RIP. A legendary man
Calves are stubborn. Like the forearms of legs. They can handle a lot, but they will grow. Do more than one thing.
I find my calves working hard when I do split squats, lunges, pistol squats or anything that force them to stabilize more. They also work hard during nordic hamstring curls.
The calves get used to calf raises and you'll stagnate if you just try to add weight and expect linear progression without a plateau.
I also do tibialis raises with bands. I just sit on the floor and keep some weight in my lap to not slide. I also make sure to stretch and massage out any trigger points.
Gyms closed, again, so doing what I can at home 5 days a week. Was waiting for you to get out the tape. It's been a month since your calf challenge. Some of us do not have Instagram so hoping you will do at least one video follow-up to the challenge video and give us that 'secret' you mentioned.
Mr. Meadows has alien biceps, I got martian calves :)
Good stuff again Mr. Meadows 👍
Calf is a very strong muscle, average 175 cm man is about 70kg. When climbing his calf is lifting about 60 kg (minus the weight of the leg. So if you want to build calf on a, let say a leg press machine the loads must be higher then your weight.
Rest in peace jhon...miss u
Can you do neck?
how to get a good calf pump without a gym as they have closed them all here again
I have a lot of stuff at home but don’t have a any of the things you have in the gym
any idea ?
Bahahahahhahahahahaaha ! 🤣 "If you are doing the work, and this doesn't work, then you're out of luck..."
Eh, Dr. Z is my favorite dude John trains with. Guy with a real job and ,fu3kin jacked! Awesome sh1t
Dr. Z!!! motivating....
main issue is people always seem to train them at the end of leg day so they're like an afterthought; same as rear delts...
Mountain calves!!!
How many reps and sets
just in time for calf day (aka every day)
That guy has amazing legs 👏
Rip john
RIP to a legend. Still getting people jacked.
raising some calves
WOW he is ripped!!!
😁
trying to get into bodybuilding
Calf and skin open circuit the response time in Martial Offense. Meaning it goes straight to hip and shoulder. This is called Proprioceptive Training within Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy. I hope this helps.
By my 2nd set of tib raises, I'm usually failing at 15 reps. Calves were growing steadily until recently I decided to switch from treadmill to asphalt trail for my running. Developed some intense shin splints. Then tried to "run it off" a few days later. Terrible idea. 🤦♂️ Hoping to get back to doing tib raises again next week.
Man you're in some big trouble , please consult to your doctor before doing anything stupid... i did the same tried to run em off, suffering since 2 years. And I can't stop running or training as i am a professional athlete. Also I've spent around $20 grand just so that i can run without pain but alas.
This guy John was trying to destroy our calves 😂😭 RIP brother.
RIP John, miss all your knowledge.
My calves are stubborn so i started recently trying to do 4-6 sets 4x a week. My calves are sore up near the knee where it bends i cant seem to het them sore in the main belly. i have a jacked up ankle so cant get a super stretch but can still get a decent stretch. Any ideas or is that where they are supposed to be sore?
Rest in peace, legend 🙏
John, the audio isnt syncing with the video
Any advice for people whose calves cramp up? Surely, I'm not the only one!
Calcium / magnesium and good old sea salt.. make sure you do a 30-60 second light weighted stretch when completely done .
Best calf pump I get is: stepper or 2x 45s per foot, under the smith machine, load the bar, standing, full squeeze up, full stretch down. It needs to be heavy weight, 12 - 15 rep, 5 sets.
Ha no it doesnt. Most people couldnt even contract them correctly with their own body weight.
@@Mike-lx8ll What no it doesn't? You know what get the best pump for me, are you nuts?
Thank you! My calves are non existent
Thank you Jon, how many sets per week would you suggest in total?
for calves 4 a day 4 x a week
@@mountaindog1 John also said, back in the day, he only started counting reps after the calves were on fire... really works. Blessings Meadows family.. keep up the yoyo practice!
