    Perfect for the title screen. The main "character" on display, the further adventures (start sign) on display, and the "air" is there making the scene look deep enough to think that the adventures ARE there somewhere. Also, the number of details decrease with the distance, which adds to it as well. Perfect. Thanks for the morning "kick" to go and work on something as well :)

    I'm 16 and have an extremely strong passion for video games, but sadly I don't know enough about how to work graphic and rendering engines yet. But I do have an extremely creative mind and great ideas for video games. Does anyone know any free graphic engines that I could play with to start practicing video design?

      ST3V0179 I know that man. I wasn't really planning on creating my big game right now, that for in the future because I still need experience to be able to get to the director/lead designer position. Practice is really all I'm going for at the moment.

      ST3V0179 age doesn't natter , I'm 16 and I know 12 languages , Photoshop and blender , currently learning zbrush , I'm not an expert in any if these except java but not everyone who makes games is an expert in the art , they have their strong points anyways my point was , money and age do influence your ambition but if you can make a little addictive game and make a heck lot of money to invest on a bigger game and work your way up , nobody can stop you .. To avoid any arguments I'll mention the languages I know -
      Java , c++ , c , c# , objective c , php , SQL , HTML 5 , XML , JavaScript , kismet , boo.

    I have a question, you see this engine? Could you make an open world game like GTA in (obviously not AS BIG) but relatively similar to GTA with all the high res graphics, pedestrian AI and AL.
    Do you think it is achieveable and how hard would it be,
    BONUS: Would this be doable in UNITY 5 or in pure C++ and OpenGL or pure Javascript and LWJGL?
    BONUS #2: How hard is it to make an open world game AND make it multiplayer? or is that just simple and quick

      v

    • @CommunistRainbowdash
      @CommunistRainbowdash 10 років тому +56

      Well, it depends on how much stuff the player can interact with, how big and detailed the map is, and where you're getting your assets (textures, models, and sounds) from. The guy in the video made this desert render in 4 hours, but I can guarantee it took much longer to make the car, the rock and sand textures, the plants, etc.
      If you're super rich and can buy all the assets you need, and you're an experienced level designer, you could probably make a tiny section of city that looks decent in two or three months of work time. However, the bulk of the work is going to be coding, modeling and bug testing. If you just want car chases and nothing else, an experienced coder can probably make police cars and oncoming traffic in a month or two if they work really fast, but pedestrians are a whole nother story (4 or 5 months at least). Unless you want everyone to be mute, you're going to need to record dialogue and chatter, so that's another month of frantically looking around for volunteers who don't sound awful (Bad voice acting can ruin an otherwise perfect game and scar you for life). You're also guaranteed to find a couple of bugs that will set you back, so I'd give you another 1 to 3 months.
      So if you want to create Grand Theft Minimalism: Never Get Out of Your Car, you could probably do it in 9 months minimum working alone, but that's assuming you're an genius level designer *and* coder, and you can invest thousands of dollars in assets. If you make the assets yourself, that's looking at another year of work at least. But if you're on a team you can divide the work up and work much faster.
      Bonus 1: It's doable in Unity, but coding an engine from scratch in C++/OpenGL is going to take years even with a team. Unless you're making a 2D game or something like Minecraft, Javascript will be a dead end.
      Bonus 2: One word: netcode. What's the maximum number of players on a given server? Annything more than 10, and you'll need to start optimizing your servers. You're going to need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: if you have a couple of dedicated servers in England and suddenly an Australian LPer mentions your game, you're going to be in trouble.
      So yeah, it's a long way from a screenshot-worthy desert scene to a full game.

    • @autbo
      @autbo 8 років тому

      In the terrain material, you get the slope angle of the terrain and do some sort of masking to make the sand only appear if the slope is less than maybe 25 degrees. If it is steeper than 25 degrees, blend to rocks.
      You could search UA-cam for a tutorial on how to make a terrain material with automatic cliffs by slope or something like that.

    This is the first video i've seen of this engine, and i can get why it's called unreal.
    I'm utterly shocked at this.
    I havn't done any game creation before, but i do 3D modeling and animation.. and i had spent days before trying to creat an environment. and after days of work, it did not look as good as just a few seconds into this video..
    So this engine.. Do alot of these assets come with the program or readily available for download?
    What kind of platforms can you make the game for?
    and can it do cutscenes? :3

    Sooo, i'm gonna start by saying how much i love your work, that's always a good place to start, especially when you really mean it ;)
    now i recently started trying to learn the engine, and i'm making good progress (i think), and i have one question. It says in the description you only used assets provided by epic games, however i can't seem to find out how you made those cliffs appear automatically in the landscape editor to save my life...
    hope my question is not to low-level and obvious^^
    your work is an inspiration to anyone interested in getting started in game production, keep up the good work and (if possible) continue sharing it with us :)

    • @evilmrfrank

      paaatreeeck The landscape cliffs are done through the actual material itself, basically automatically applies a specific texture to things at a certain slant. You can find this material in the vehicle demo that Epic Games released a while ago.

    I'd make a movie called Tank-A-Saurus Rex and then a game based on the movie, when I finished developing it. Also it pays to buy resource packs and make other doable projects before buying maya and some plugins for maya to make model design a synch so you can design that professional game, or movie, or both.

    Would you be able to post a tutorial on this? I'd love to see how you made it and perhaps a narrative on why you would use X tool or why you use the same model of rock or something. I'ts a very good job, thanks for sharing.

    Nice, but with my mild case of OCD, I couldn't help but notice that the upper guard rails next to the vehicle are facing the wrong way. The rail should be on the road side with the posts on the other side. Not a biggie though... very nice scene.

    K so I got a question. How exactly do you create layered terrain in unreal 4. Like in most game engines you just simply drag and drop or click add layer, but this one is strange. You would think they would have kept udk's layer system, but instead they made it extremely complicated. I've seen some tutorials that use the material editor to make layered terrains, but when I try that it becomes a glitchy buggy mess.

      Tons of practice, that is the quickest way to get better. I'd also highly suggest entering any competitions there may be as well as posting your stuff regularly to get feedback from other people on forums. Don't be afraid of getting negative feedback as that will usually be the most useful for improving your work. Also always use references when building environments, you are never too experienced to learn from nature and real life when putting your environments together.

    I understand this is just a scene, but quick newbie question how would you handle level streaming? would you just have the entire loaded all at the same time? does UE4 handle it for you? or how would you go about something like this?

    • @evilmrfrank
      @evilmrfrank  10 років тому +2

      I haven't tried using level streaming in UE4 yet but I imagine it works the same as UE3 does for the most part. You basically split your levels into multiple levels and setup streaming volumes, basically as a player progresses through the level they hit the streaming volumes and it triggers the next sections of levels to be loaded in. This is helpful for both memory and performance reasons on much larger levels. I imagine on next gen consoles you wont have to use nearly as much streaming as one of the main reasons you'd need to on 360 and PS3 was the low memory restrictions.
