My gosh what an incredible piece of gear you guys have made. My buddy and I jammed tonight with all our hardware/synths and recorded into this and we were then able to jam again with the recording bringing bits in and out again and adding effects over the recording. A whole world has opened up for our jamming nights. Thank you so much!!
You're welcome, we're glad you're enjoying it! If you upload any of your music made with the Model 12 to UA-cam be sure to tag us in it so we can check it out!
I notice from comments below that Tascam actually answers many question on this YT channel. That's a real sign these guys rock & care about their user base & potential customers. That's a huge plus & kudos to Tascam USA. You get the Virtual Golden Gear Award from me.
You guys are doing great work, opening up the market to a whole set of new users. This device reminds me of my radio broadcasting days. Can't wait to get my hands on the faders again instead of clicking a computer screen. Love the possibilities this thing has 👍
Can you guys make a tutorial on the DAW control and MIDI capabilities such as MIDI Clock Output? I haven't seen any tutorials on this at all and reviews of these features on online retailers say a lot of buyers are having trouble. I understand you guys must be under pressure from COVID but this would go a long way for someone like me who is still on the fence about this product. Thank you!
For some reason I cannot add any external wave files on the folder music on TASCAM, maybe I got some restrictions on my SD card? can anyone help how to fix it?
Here's a tip on how to send a recorded song from the SD-card via USB to a DAW with all channels separated. 1.) Set MIXER->MTR/USB SEND POINT to POST CMP or POST EQ. 2.) Set SYSTEM/USB AUDIO/PC
On the Model 12, as an example after 6-8 channels for a live song have been recorded to SD card, I'm aware that the results may be exported as a "stereo mix" -- but I'd like to confirm that from the SD card you can also export each of (say 6, or 8) tracks separately, per channel, so these may be modifed in post later using a DAW. Thanks for any help!
That is correct, you can export the individual track recordings. They are found in the Song's folder in the MTR folder of the SD card. They are recorded as Wave files
my channel is dedicated to recording on a TASCAM Porta Two, but the sane part of me really wants to get this Model 12, maybe the 16...love your company
I like it most as a stand-alone bc I have no idea how to use daw. And this video is perfect since I didn’t know you could load a track onto the mixer. Thank you much.
You're very welcome! And you are not alone - there a tons of folks out there who are going DAWless and recording to standalone recorders like the Model 12.
I just purchased one. Although tim excited about its features, I’m missing one thing. Please inform how to playback. I feel like I’m missing one little step to get playback. Yes I have signal just no playback from my mac. Using as an interface. My first 2 channels are open for playback but still nothing.
Make sure channel 1 and 2's mode are set to PC, press the Main buttons down on those channels, turn up those faders and the Main fader. Make sure on the Mac you have the Model 12 set in the System Preferences to be the Main output device.
Hello! As with anything, there are definitely risks associated with buying used gear. We'd recommend making sure you trust the source you're purchasing from, plus make sure that there is some sort of guarantee on the product in case there are issues with it (or, at the very least, a return policy).
Yes, you can record a phone to the Model 12. You can record a call in either standalone mode or into your DAW if you're using it as an interface. Channels 9 & 10 have a TRRS input on the back panel which was specifically made for phones.
@@burythebonehead Hello! This comment was from several years ago. The Model 12 can be set to any of the MCU protocol options and used as a DAW controller with FL Studio.
I guess I messed up by buying the Mackie Onyx 12, because it can only record to two separate tracks to my DAW. I have only found yesterday that USB technology has advanced to be able to do multitracking to more than just two individual tracks. I used a Mackie Firewire mixer before.
Is it able to receive audio on multiple channels sent via usb from an iPad or computer to record onto the Tascam Model 12 SD card? I mostly use AUM on the ipad
So are you using your guitar on input 1 to record to the other tracks as well? I'm wondering if this is possible.. i believe other tascam multitracks work this way but I don't want to assume.
Can you "automate" gain throughout the track as you would on a software DAW? And can you export/bounce a project as individual tracks so you can do your final mix/access to more effects on your computer?
Hello Mayhem Jack! When bouncing a mix, you can ride the faders to change the levels of each individual channel. It's not automation like you'd write in on your DAW, but more like the old school approach engineers would use pre-computers. Also, each channel is recorded as an individual file on the SD card - you could then import all of that into your DAW and mix and add processing as you see fit.
Are you able to use the fx live or only on playback from the sd card? What is the button I need to push to make effects available on aux 2? Couldn’t figure out how to change the fx from N/A
Hello Jon! The FX can be used in live settings. If you look at the bottom right of the mixer in the master fader section you'll see the FX fader. There are a series of buttons there which will allow you to assign the FX to one or more outputs such as AUX 1, MAIN, and SUB. Just push one or more of these in to route the audio. AUX 2 is the default, but you may need to repurpose AUX 1 & 2.
@@TASCAMUSA Thanks for the response, but still having a problem. The top right corner of screen says FX. N/A. How do I change this? I don't have an SD card yet, could that be the problem?
@@jondriver9069 the Model 12 is designed to function as a standalone mixer, so the effects will work regardless of SD card insertion. Having a cable plugged into the AUX 2 jack will disable the internal FX effects engine and the message "FX.N/A" will appear on the screen.
I need some help here. I have seen many helpful videos out here, but I've never seen how you can run the recorder if any to all 12 channels. If not the case, do at least 10 channels. Some say it can only record 8. If so, then 7/8 and 9/10 is stereo. So can anyone show me all of the channels being used for recording set up. Thank you in advance. Also, a second question is can the channels when set to MTR be recorded in Live Mode and played back without using the 3 way selector switch and wearing it out with time.
Hello pEpul Etrz! Yes, you can definitely utilize the sub outputs that way. The main difference between the Main Outs and Sub Outs is just XLR vs TRS. In my personal setup, I use the Sub Outs for my monitors because the monitor controller in my studio only has TRS inputs. So, feel free to experiment and find what works best for you!
As a dawless producer I would love to see a menu option for auto-renaming the tracks being exported to the MUSIC folder, even a Track Rename option would be a great improvement. Thank you TASCAM :-)
When I try and open the drum track I loaded I get the error message: "Sample rate Unmatch" I confirmed that the drum track is both 44100 Hz Sample Rate as well as 16-bit Sample Format. Can anyone please help?
Hello. If the drum track you're loading into your song is 16-bit/44.1k and you're receiving the sample rate mismatch error, that means that the song you're loading it into is not 16/44.1k. There's a couple of ways to tackle this - one being convert the file on a computer to the sample rate of the song on the Model 12, then import it. Or, start a new song and make sure to select 16/44.1k as the sample rate so the drum track matches that. However, if you've already started recording material before importing the drums, this could cause more of a headache for you.
Can someone tell me if it's possible to send the audio out from individual tracks from a DAW (Say Ableton) nto the Model 12 and then record it? I want to add some analog to the digital world?
Hello Brian! Unfortunately, no - there is not a playlist function to make this happen. A couple of workarounds to this: 1.) You could load the song files into your DAW and arrange them how you'd like, then bounce the file down and transfer it to the SD card, then load that file onto a track of your choosing. 2.) If you aren't using a DAW, you could always play the songs on your phone or other device and - using either the 1/8" or Bluetooth inputs - record the songs in order directly to the Model 12. We hope this helps! Let us know if you need anything else!
love the model12 .. if you ever make a upgraded model 12B? please add more SUB-outs (2or more) .. to send separate mixes out to in-ears and stereo processors.. (a extra stereo aux send would also be great) and the headphones button selection to (main, aux1/2 and sub switch) -- last the black buttons under the display make them grey or white .. hard to see on stage or darker studio space., or put a usb power on top to put a led lamp in :) thanks Tascam
There's a lot of play in the USB cable to this mixer. I was getting stuttering and realized it was an intermittent USB connection. Is there a lot of play in all of them?
Hello Michael. There shouldn't be any "play" in the USB cable. I don't know what you mean specifically by "stuttering", but having a poor USB connection will cause a unit to completely disconnect, not create glitches in audio. When you have the Model 12 in front of you, please give us a call at 323-726-0303.
I hit the Stereo Export "yes" as you describe to do in video. Did it 3 times and every time it spins to 90% and freezes up. I have to turn the unit off and on to restore. What's happening ?
Hello Don! That's not necessarily the easiest of answers to troubleshoot via UA-cam. When you get time to sit down in front of your Model 12, give our tech support a call at 323-726-0303 and we'll work through it and get the issue resolved!
I'm having trouble getting mine to count in. When I use the SD card, It just starts recording. I would like a count in, so that there's a fade in. I'm trying to use this to record things as I go, live, without using a DAW.
Hello, Sandy! First thing, update the Model 12 firmware to the newest version. Next, follow the link below and check out the options for count-in/click with the Model 12. tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/model_12/efs_model12_add_vamp_obs_va.pdf Hopefully this solves your issue!
Hello Don! If you enter the menu, the third option down should be "Click". Open that, then go to Settings - you'll have the option to route the click to Click Out, Headphone 1, Headphone 2, Main Out, Sub Out, Aux 1, and Aux 2. If you choose Click Out, on the back of the Model 12 is a 1/4" output labeled "Click". You can line out from there and input that into an open channel. Another option would be adding it to a headphone amplifier if you have your unit connected in such a way. In the Click Menu you'll see Metronome which gives you the parameters with which to set the click. You'll also see a count-in option from the main menu.
So I heard you can't use the model 16 and 24 as DAW controller?? So why does it have the "PC" option on the switch right next to LIVE mode and MTR mode ????? Can you use the 16 and 24 as an audio interface????
Hello Mr. Chill! You are correct - the Models 16 & 24 cannot be used as a DAW controller. These units have a MODE switch which can be toggled between Live (mixer applications), PC (audio interface applications), and MTR (standalone multi-track recorder applications).
How do you connect outboard gear into the Model 12? I have a Warm Audio WA73 EQ and WA 2A Compressor that I want to add individually to my drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. I'm going "AUX output 2" into the EQ and out of Compressor into MIC/LINE channel 9/10. Please let me know if I'm doing it wrong. Thanks as always!
There are two ways of doing it, and that's one. The other, is that there are 1/4" INSERT options on channels one and two. If you look at the back of the Model 12 you should see those directly underneath the XLR input. You can run your signal through the WA73EQ (great piece of gear, by the way) and then into the INSERT. This will effectively bypass the preamp built into the Model 12. Hope this helps!
Got my model 12 today to use as a standalone multitrack recorder. There wasn’t an sd card in the unit. Bugged me because they say nothing on their site about it.
@@jdpower6360, on the Model 12 product page there's a section that reads "Included Items" which reveals everything that comes with the unit - SD card is not listed.
Hello Deon! You can use one effect at a time on as many channels as you'd like. If you want to assign multiple effects to different channels, you'll have to do that one take at a time.
When recording in standalone mode like this, is the only option to export the sereo mix or can I export the individual channel recordings as separate WAVs to bring into DAW on the SD Card? I can only see the export stereo mix option? Cheers
Hello! You can do both of these options. To retrieve the individual multi-tracked files you'll need to put the Model 12 in SD card reader mode. Then, on your computer, open the SD card like you would any other hard drive, then extract those files from the MTR folder.
@@TASCAMUSA sweet. That’s ideal. I’ve only just got it so just experimenting now. So if I don’t export Stereo mix, then the individual channels recordings are just on the SD card? & I can either take the sd card and put it in my computer, or follow along what you said above? My place where my mixer and equipment is is a separate unit to where my other computer is, so I’ll usually record my jams, then take the exported files and mix down / edit in Logic on my desktop Mac at home.
@@h-dawg969 you're correct - the SD card can be removed and then put into a reader attached to a computer and the files can be retrieved that way, too.
@@TASCAMUSA yeah cool. Cheers I managed to get it sorted and uploaded a deep house hardware jam the other day. I think I tagged Tascam in it so you should see it if your interested. Great to see so many replies to questions. Mine is around mixing down and levels. MTR playback the levels seems to only show prefade so I don't know the actual level of returns and also confused by the master fader true level so I can best get final levels of the song. If I go through a mix, hitting record on the main rec button to record the mix and then export song as Stereo file. The file I bring in to my laptop the levels are usually poor and there seems to be no way to judge/know what these levels will be, am I missing something? Everything else about the Model 12 I really like, many thanks
The individual track meters in the Meter screen can only be pre fader. I would do your stereo mix recording and have the levels on the Main meter up almost to OL so that the stereo mix is nice and loud without overloading
@@TASCAMUSA thanks for your reply much appreciated. Seems a major oversight not to have returns post fade (maybe a firmware update? If I can request) and a true Digital Stereo level indicator. I bought this as it seemed more self contained than many other mixers so I didn't need to link to a DAW but in current state mixing down I'll need to send out to Pro Tools
Please do a video on using headphones for recording in the DAW. I wanted to record bass guitar, but it was in mono, only in left speaker. Thanks for help!
Yes the first 6 inputs are mono (mixers etc. usually uses mono channels). I think you have used a stereo track for the bass in your DAW. Change it to mono instead
@@ladylucks910 It sounds like you guys are recording into a stereo track within your DAW which is looking for signal from two inputs. Create a Mono track within your DAW so it is only looking for signal from one input, that should correct the issue
@@TASCAMUSA I got a model12 for 2 months now and I'm very dispointed because the quality is terrible. Not sure what else I can do. Tried every way I can think of and no luck.
@@TASCAMUSA THANKS! So the Model 24 is suitable for a singer-songwriter whose sole purpose is to record songs on the machine including mixing and exporting (without a computer).
If you are using the same instrument on different tracks(such as multiple guitar parts), do you have to unplug your guitar from track 1 to track 2 input unplug to track 3 etc every time you record a new part? or can you leave it in input 1 and assign it to track 2,3,and so forth for each new recorded track?
Hello Richard! There are no internal routing options available on the Model Mixers. So, you'd need to unplug from the current channel and plug into a new one for the next track with the same instrument.
When using it to record with a DAW, is it just 'pass through' or are you able to use the mixing and effects on the channel strip before it goes into your daw? In other words, does all of the Tascam goodness happen in the recording chain, first, before the DAW?
Hello Todd! One of the really great things about the Model 12 is the ability to set the USB send point. That means you can get all the TASCAM goodness on the way into your DAW!
Windows 10 64 bit. I install the driver. Install went fine and green USB light is flashing. I set this up as a default device in Windows. I connect my headphones. Turn the volume up. The unit remains dead silent no matter what I do or play, be it ASIO in FL Studio or yt vid. Is there a magic button somewhere for this thing to actually output sound as a normal audio interface does?
@@TASCAMUSA That is NOT enough and the manual does not mention this basic procedure. It is as follows: 1. IMPORTANT: Bring the MAIN and SUB fader all down (to protect against sound burst); 2. Connect the USB, install the drivers, connect the speakers to either MAIN output or SUB output (or both); 3. Switch the 1 and 2 channel MODE to PC. Afaik, only those channels output the audio from the computer, regardless of others labeled as PC mode available as well; 4. Pan channel 1 hard left and channel 2 hard right to get a normal stereo sound; 5. Bring the channel 1 and 2 faders all the way up (make sure your SUB and MAIN faders are all DOWN! - step 2). This is to ensure the even level of sound in both channels, since there is no sweet spot anywhere and you can never be sure if your sound is 100% balanced in both speakers. 6. Make sure the red "PFL/AFL" diode is off (just unpress all the buttons on the board if you are in doubt, so they are in UP position - they are not pressed down); 7. On channels 1 and 2 Press MAIN button to direct the output into the MAIN fader (or "SUB" if you are using SUB outputs). These buttons must remain in DOWN position, or you will hear nothing; 8. Play a soundclip, yt vid or whatever and then slowly and carefully put the MAIN/SUB fader up, until desired volume level. If you do it abruptly, you can damage your speakers, not to mention waking up half of the city. There is a slight delay between the fader movement and actual volume change. MAIN meters should light up green. 9. Act accordingly for headphones output. 10. Enjoy this excellent piece of equipment ad maiorem Dei gloriam!

Forgive me if this has already been answered, but can you record to the SD card and your DAW at the same time? Also are your effects settings, EQ and comp printed to both the SD and the DAW?
Hello Rex! Yes - one can record to both the DAW and SD card at the same time. As for printing effects, EQ, and compressor; one can set the USB send point at different points in the channel to send to the DAW. When tracking to the SD card not everything will print, but bouncing the tracks with those particular adjustments will do the trick!
@@LG-di5wz by setting the USB sends points, we're referring to at what point in the the signal chain each channel's audio is sent to the computer. For example, a user can have the audio sent directly after the preamp (the unprocessed audio, PRE COMP), after the compressor (after the preamps and with compression, POST COMP), after the EQ (after the preamps, compressor, and EQ - POST EQ). With this, varying levels of signal processing can be streamed and/or tracked into your software on the computer. To do this, follow these steps: 1.) While not in use, enter the menu and navigate to the MIXER menu. 2.) Select the MTR/USB Send Point Menu - from here we'll have the options for every channel, so this can be completely customized. 3.) On each channel, highlight the channel in question and press the multi-jog wheel to access that channels menu, then scroll to which selection is preferred and click the multi-jog wheel again to confirm. We hope this helps!
Turn off all the AFL and PFL buttons on the channels and Auxes, then press the Main buttons down on the channels and turn up the faders and turn up the Main fader. Then turn up the Phones knob.
Hello! At the moment that you interface Tascam to the PC (at 5.00) Is possible assign an IMPUT STEREO (9/10) in one channel or Is possible Only in Mono? And Is possible interface One Channel at the DAW and record on SD in the same time? Thanks you !!
Hello Alessio! Yes, you can record to both a DAW and SD card at the same time. Input 9/10 on the Model 12 is a stereo channel - so if you have a stereo signal going to it, then you should be able to hear a stereo signal - the same goes for 7/8. Inputs 1-6 are all mono and cannot handle stereo, but you could split a stereo signal across two channels ( 3 & 4 for example) and then pan them hard left and right.
Idk know if this is true in terms of the recording function. I hooked my condensor mic up to channel 1 while in live mode, I pressed record on the main record by the display not the channel and my vocal recorded. has any one else noticed this. so my question is what is the difference or reason to rec enable the channel if the main rec already worked? I was using the latest firmware . someone test this out and let me know if you got the same result.
@Tony Halsall At the moment there doesn't seem to be any plans to do this. But, the more feedback we hear from folks always helps us to determine the direction to head with those updates!
@Tony Halsall That's interesting. I just tried it with my Model 12 and my iPhone - for pairing, the farthest away I tried was about ten feet. But, I walked from my office to the back of my house (about thirty feet) and left my phone back there and it didn't seem to have any impact on the signal. If you'd like, you can always give our support team a call when you're in front of the Model 12 and they can help troubleshoot the issue!
Jayee, the Model 12 can be used as a mixer for live performances and rehearsals, as a standalone multitrack recorder, a USB Audio interface for recording and live streaming and conferencing, and as a DAW controller for having a great hands on experience with your favorite recording software.
After I click Import then Ok, its says File Error. It's a .wav file so I don't understand why its not working if I'm following all the correct steps. Any suggestions?
Hello Alan! Have you set up a new song on the Model 12 and are then importing tracks from a computer? If so, the issue is that the tracks being imported do not match the sample rate and bit depth of the song created on the Model 12. You could either convert the tracks on your computer to match the song, or you could create a new song on the Model 12 that match the tracks. You can find the sample rate and bit depth by right-clicking on the files on your computer and checking out the file info.
@@TASCAMUSA That made the difference. I wasn't aware that matching the sample rate and bit depth even could be an issue. Thanks for the help. As for VAMP, could it be possible to program the number of times a sample loops? It's more familiar to me to loop a sample on Cubase so I can repeat a precise take rather play the whole thing out.
@@alancostello7500 Glad we could help! As for VAMP - it's more of a rehearsal tool than recording. Once you start looping with VAMP you won't be able to record over it, but you can play along and use most of the other functions still in order to really nail a part either for mixing or writing.
@@TASCAMUSA Thank you, that makes sense. As for firmware, if it says "Error Product" when I try to update the firmware, what does that mean? Its not a zip file and I pasted the firmware file int the "Utility" folder.

I'm having an issue where I export the stereo mix, and then transfer it to my computer and no sound plays. No sound in SD playback either. Is there a step I'm missing?
@@frankeydaniels Thanks, I realized the issue was that it only records the sound coming out of the *main* output, not the solo. It was fine when the volume was up on main.
So if you want to use the tascam 12 as an audio interface, it will record multiple tracks at the same time separately? Or you have to record once each?
What's the approximate latency round trip? Not direct monitoring, cause I need my plugins and amp sims of course... Is it about the same as my older Tascam 2x2 interface or better latency now? And can I shut down or turn down the main volume going to the speakers when using headphones and turn my headphone volume up?
It's probably about the same as the US-2X2, maybe slightly better. The Main volume fader also affects the headphone output, so I would suggest turning off the monitors when you only want to hear the headphones
Hello! The Model 24 does not have an internal metronome. However, with the bluetooth input it's easy to send a click track from a bluetooth enabled device to the unit and record it!
@@landzzman it wouldn't be an automatic process. You'd have to press record on the Model 24 the start the metronome. But, once you've recorded the click track onto the bluetooth channel, it'll be there and you won't have to worry about starting the metronome for every single take. I'd personally recommend to take care of the metronome before you start tracking/recording any instruments.
You would need to ask Focusrite if Studio One is able to use 2 interfaces at once. I know on Mac you can create an aggregate device which combines multiple audio interfaces as one
@@TASCAMUSA I’m still seeking clarification after watching a lot of videos. Are all those channels able to record SIMULTANEOUSLY? Into a DAW like Ableton so you don’t have to bother bouncing the wave files?
Two Questions: I have to flip the mode switch to hear what I just recorded? So if I record 6 drums tracks I have to flip all the switches to play them back? Can you export the wav files like you can on the DP24? Where everything lines up? Thanks in advance.
Yes, when you record to the SD card you have to switch the channels to MTR to hear the play back of those tracks. You can export the individual tracks from the SD card by going into the song's folder in the MTR folder of the SD card
Great video, Can you remove the SD card from this unit and install it to your comp and then tranfer the master file to your comp instead of connecting a USB cable to transfer the master file to your comp? My Model 12 is not located near my comp Thank you.
Yes, you can do that. Taking the SD card out and putting it into your computer is the same as connecting the device over USB and putting it into Storage mode

I don't know if this has been mentioned but is there the option of using the other knobs such as the EQ or aux sends to map in a DAW to control parameters? I just bought it, sounds very good, my cubase is reading it but two annoying things: 1) I can’t connect my pedal on the aux, it has only aux out, no returns? 2) the return of my laptop is going only on channels 1 and 2 which is a waste, I can’t use those two channels for my other instruments when im producing If anyone has any tricks and tips for those two issues will be very much appreciated 🙏🏻
Hello Francesco! Glad you're enjoying the unit so far, here's what you can do to fix those issues: 1.) The AUX is a send only, no return. Operation for this is going to require you to send from the AUX of your choice and then bring that signal back in on an open channel. If you're recording to a DAW this shouldn't be an issue at all. But, if you're recording in standalone MTR mode, this can definitely leave you with one less channel than you anticipated. You could bounce some tracks down to counterbalance this. 2.) As far as changing the output monitor on the Model 12, there are some options. On a Mac, you change this in the AUDIO/MIDI setup in your settings panel. With Windows, you cannot change what outputs the system sounds come from - channels 1 & 2 are your only options. Now, that only applies to system sounds. If we're talking about the return from your DAW, these can absolutely be changed. You'll need to do that in your DAW - you'll need to change whichever channels are routed to monitoring to whichever alternate output you'd like to use; then make sure those channels have been switched to PC. If this isn't working, you may need to access your DAW's I/O mapping and add those channels to the list.
@@TASCAMUSA thank you so much, I’m getting into this mixer and is just so good, as an audio interface just improved so much my quality recording in my cubase, I’m very happy with this purchase, the only thing I wish to had the monitoring from the laptop to one knob like the one for the sd card instead wasting two channels from the mixer, it might be possible for a future firmware update ?! @TASCAM Official Greetings. If I were to record a song with, say, 5 tracks to the model 12's SD card, would it then be possible to hook the Model 12 up to a PC as an interface, play the song on the Model 12 and record out those 5 tracks simultaneously to the PC DAW, manipulating the faders? Or can those 5 tracks only be 'exported' as files? Cheers
Hello! The Model 12 is compatible with phones, so with the proper cable you should be able to connect the Model 12 via USB directly to your phone or other smart device.

Good job man! This was very easy to understand also short and sweet! Time is precious so thanks again.
Thank you!

Here's a tip on how to send a recorded song from the SD-card via USB to a DAW with all channels separated.
1.) Set MIXER->MTR/USB SEND POINT to POST CMP or POST EQ.
2.) Set SYSTEM/USB AUDIO/PC
I can not hear myself while recording using the Model 12 as a USB interface. Any tips?
On the Model 12, as an example after 6-8 channels for a live song have been recorded to SD card, I'm aware that the results may be exported as a "stereo mix" -- but I'd like to confirm that from the SD card you can also export each of (say 6, or 8) tracks separately, per channel, so these may be modifed in post later using a DAW. Thanks for any help!
That is correct, you can export the individual track recordings. They are found in the Song's folder in the MTR folder of the SD card. They are recorded as Wave files
Can the tracks all be bounced simultaneously from the DAW, through the Tascam, and onto another multi-track recorder, like a multi-track tape machine?

I like it most as a stand-alone bc I have no idea how to use daw. And this video is perfect since I didn’t know you could load a track onto the mixer. Thank you much.
You're very welcome! And you are not alone - there a tons of folks out there who are going DAWless and recording to standalone recorders like the Model 12.
I'm the opposite funnily enough, I'm tired of using daws and bought this to get away from that workflow. It's been a huge learning curve though

There isn't a way to assign inputs to different channels on the Model 12, 16 or 24
@@TASCAMUSA thanks for the reply 🙏
Also, a second question is can the channels when set to MTR be recorded in Live Mode and played back without using the 3 way selector switch and wearing it out with time.
so in the user manual it reads to use the main outs with some studio monitors..so does that mean the sub outs can just be a normal stereo amp?
Hello pEpul Etrz! Yes, you can definitely utilize the sub outputs that way. The main difference between the Main Outs and Sub Outs is just XLR vs TRS. In my personal setup, I use the Sub Outs for my monitors because the monitor controller in my studio only has TRS inputs. So, feel free to experiment and find what works best for you!
As a dawless producer I would love to see a menu option for auto-renaming the tracks being exported to the MUSIC folder, even a Track Rename option would be a great improvement. Thank you TASCAM :-)
Can you hook speakers up directly to the tascam are do you need an outboard Amp for the speakers ?
Hello! Yes, there are outputs on the back of the Model 12 - no amp needed.
How to I get that t-shirt
Is there a playlist function on the Model 12 , to load up several song files and play through them?
Hello Brian! Unfortunately, no - there is not a playlist function to make this happen. A couple of workarounds to this:
1.) You could load the song files into your DAW and arrange them how you'd like, then bounce the file down and transfer it to the SD card, then load that file onto a track of your choosing.
2.) If you aren't using a DAW, you could always play the songs on your phone or other device and - using either the 1/8" or Bluetooth inputs - record the songs in order directly to the Model 12.
We hope this helps! Let us know if you need anything else!

Hello! You'll need to have channels 1 & 2 set to PC Mode in order to hear playback from your system.
@@TASCAMUSA
That is NOT enough and the manual does not mention this basic procedure. It is as follows:
1. IMPORTANT: Bring the MAIN and SUB fader all down (to protect against sound burst);
2. Connect the USB, install the drivers, connect the speakers to either MAIN output or SUB output (or both);
3. Switch the 1 and 2 channel MODE to PC. Afaik, only those channels output the audio from the computer, regardless of others labeled as PC mode available as well;
4. Pan channel 1 hard left and channel 2 hard right to get a normal stereo sound;
6. Make sure the red "PFL/AFL" diode is off (just unpress all the buttons on the board if you are in doubt, so they are in UP position - they are not pressed down);
7. On channels 1 and 2 Press MAIN button to direct the output into the MAIN fader (or "SUB" if you are using SUB outputs). These buttons must remain in DOWN position, or you will hear nothing;

Oh heck yeah!
@@TASCAMUSA what do you mean by setting the USB send points? How would you do that ?
@@LG-di5wz by setting the USB sends points, we're referring to at what point in the the signal chain each channel's audio is sent to the computer.
For example, a user can have the audio sent directly after the preamp (the unprocessed audio, PRE COMP), after the compressor (after the preamps and with compression, POST COMP), after the EQ (after the preamps, compressor, and EQ - POST EQ).
With this, varying levels of signal processing can be streamed and/or tracked into your software on the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
1.) While not in use, enter the menu and navigate to the MIXER menu.

I'm using Reason 10 as my DAW. Is the Model 12 working as it is intended to do? Can I control the levels and panning etc. when in DAW controller mode?
Is it possible to assign one input to any of the 12 tracks in stand alone recorder mode?
No, you cannot assign inputs to different tracks on the Model 12
Is this module only use for recording purposes?
@@alancostello7500 that's definitely a bizarre situation. I've heard of that error when pasting the entire folder and not just the firmware update.

I'm having an issue where I export the stereo mix, and then transfer it to my computer and no sound plays. No sound in SD playback either. Is there a step I'm missing?
I'm not sure, give us a call at 323-726-0303 when in front of the unit
happened to me
make sure the track you assigning is a wav file and mp3 lol
@@frankeydaniels Thanks, I realized the issue was that it only records the sound coming out of the *main* output, not the solo. It was fine when the volume was up on main.
I had exactly the same problem. I got a silent stereo mix file. But the solution in my case was to format the SD-card with the Tascam Model 12.
So if you want to use the tascam 12 as an audio interface, it will record multiple tracks at the same time separately? Or you have to record once each?
Hello! The Model 12 is able to record multiple tracks at the same time to different channels.
One question has the model 24 internal metronom?
Hello! The Model 24 does not have an internal metronome. However, with the bluetooth input it's easy to send a click track from a bluetooth enabled device to the unit and record it!
@@TASCAMUSA thank you. But how I'll will sync up the metronom with the model24 that they start recording together?
@@landzzman it wouldn't be an automatic process. You'd have to press record on the Model 24 the start the metronome. But, once you've recorded the click track onto the bluetooth channel, it'll be there and you won't have to worry about starting the metronome for every single take. I'd personally recommend to take care of the metronome before you start tracking/recording any instruments.
@@TASCAMUSA thank you very much for your help. Last question . Can you recommend me any metronom online easy to download?
@@landzzman I've heard some good things about one called Pro Metronome. It's available on the Apple App Store for free.
Can i use a Focusrite 18i20 with the 12 to Studio one to get 16 XLRs working together?
You would need to ask Focusrite if Studio One is able to use 2 interfaces at once. I know on Mac you can create an aggregate device which combines multiple audio interfaces as one
Can you record 12 tracks live directly into your DAW? It's not clear from the product info I've seen.
The mixer has 10 channels plus a stereo mix which can all be recorded live into your DAW
@@TASCAMUSA I’m still seeking clarification after watching a lot of videos. Are all those channels able to record SIMULTANEOUSLY? Into a DAW like Ableton so you don’t have to bother bouncing the wave files?
@@unfamiliarenvironments yes - all of the channels can record simultaneously into any DAW of your choosing.
@@TASCAMUSA PURCHASED! thank you!
@@unfamiliarenvironments you're welcome! Enjoy the Model 12!
Are you able to use multiple effects on different tracks? For example a reverb on track one and a chorus on track two?
No, it is one type of effect that you can send varying amounts of each track to that effect
@@TASCAMUSA Thanks for the reply! It would however be a great feature imo.
@@Zaxxon95 You can always add an external effects processor to have more effects.
@@TASCAMUSA Awesome, thanks!
@@TASCAMUSA So you can choose for example to have some reverb on channel 1 and no reverb at all on channel 2 at the same time, right?
What's the status of the EQ's and the compressors? Are they printing to the DH when recording or on playback, or mix down?
You can have the channel's EQ and compressor print to the track if you would like.
Two Questions:
I have to flip the mode switch to hear what I just recorded?
@@TASCAMUSA Thank you for the reply, I am really loving this Model 16
Will this work with the Luna DAW from Universal Audio?
Hello Alexander, great question! As far as we know, UA's Luna DAW is only compatible with their own brand of audio interfaces - which is unfortunate.
@@TASCAMUSA how it works with UAD interface ? Can i use both on mac ? UAD being the master to my speakers ?
@@Artinmotionmusic - you can definitely use both interfaces on you Mac. If you go to the Launchpad, then the OTHER menu, then Audio MIDI Setup, you can click the plus sign at the bottom left of the screen and create a new Aggregate Audio Device. This means you can link multiple interfaces together and have your system recognize it as one.
For a step-by-step guide on this, we created a tutorial that you can find by following this link below. We used a Model 12 and a US-16x08, but you can use any interfaces you'd like. Let us know if you need any additional help!

I don't know if this has been mentioned but is there the option of using the other knobs such as the EQ or aux sends to map in a DAW to control parameters? I know the pan and faders and solo are mapped already, but is it possible to use more of the mixer as a midi controller? Could this come in a future firmware update? The ability to control your DAW through your mixer is pretty unique so I am curious. :)
Most of the knobs and buttons send midi messages so you should be able to map other controls within your DAW
@@TASCAMUSA jesus, that's brilliant!! As far as reviews have said, it's pretty basic as a daw controller. Not one mentions it sends midi CC!!!! Oh good job!! My new one has just arrived, opening it today!!
Hi guys! i have a question... When i connect it on the computer my volume on the mac is blocked, i only can turn the volume down on the tascam...with my older audio inetrface it doesnt happened to me, so i assume this is a thing that this mixer does, can i change it?
Since the volume adjustment is made on the Tascam you will not be able to change the volume on the computer itself
@@TASCAMUSA The thing is tah, i have the volumen on 0, on the DAW, but my mixer in on full volume, all in red, with my sliders on 10%, so i think this is not good. ¿Any recommendation?

has anyone been able to have the model 12 syncing its internal clock to an external source connected to its MIDI din input, or sending out its clock to the MIDI out port ? Doesn't seem to work for me. Not even sure if it actually relays anything through the rest of the MIDI chain...
make new song, adjust tempo in click, then push play .. the midi out on tascam12 send midi tempo clock out to external gear, ::: the midi in is a only midi in to your computer if needed..no clock in.
Can I adjust the time and start recording anywhere in the track ?
Yes you can fast forward and start your recording later into the song, Nathan than having to start your recording at 0
how to send eq to main mix?
The EQ on the channels are always sent to the Main Mix.
@@TASCAMUSA thanks. it was good of your tech to call me yesterday & explain. kudos to Tascam for the good support! you have to mix down to get the EQ in. you cannot use the EQ's on individual channels for download. i guess i shouldnt expect channel strips for this price :)
Are FX ony on the master???
Hello! No, the FX are assignable to any channel on the Model 12.
@@TASCAMUSA So it's perfect for me:) thank you.
I just bought it, sounds very good, my cubase is reading it but two annoying things:
1) I can’t connect my pedal on the aux, it has only aux out, no returns?
2) the return of my laptop is going only on channels 1 and 2 which is a waste, I can’t use those two channels for my other instruments when im producing
If anyone has any tricks and tips for those two issues will be very much appreciated 🙏🏻
Hello Francesco! Glad you're enjoying the unit so far, here's what you can do to fix those issues:
1.) The AUX is a send only, no return.
Thank you again for replied 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
It seems my experience with the portastudio (8track) will carry over a bit. love new toys.
I’m having a file error when I try to load in my wav file. Can someone plz help me
Hello, Ryan! What is the error message you're receiving?
@TASCAM Official Greetings. If I were to record a song with, say, 5 tracks to the model 12's SD card, would it then be possible to hook the Model 12 up to a PC as an interface, play the song on the Model 12 and record out those 5 tracks simultaneously to the PC DAW, manipulating the faders? Or can those 5 tracks only be 'exported' as files? Cheers
How can we send the main LR output audio from model 12 to a phone to record tik tok musician videos? Thank you
Hello! The Model 12 is compatible with phones, so with the proper cable you should be able to connect the Model 12 via USB directly to your phone or other smart device.
