      West Marine is not available in the EU (they won't even let me look at their website. Instead of updating their website to be compliant with a new data security law they just blocked us all... Americans). And I don't think you get any credit when I make purchases on amazon.de . You might want to set up affiliate accounts for EU and UK. I think you're missing out on over half the market by being so US centric .

      Patrick asked me to answer since weather is one of my jobs on the boat. If you go to our blog, there are at least 3 articles there covering the Iridium GO...this will get you started... whereisbrickhouse.com/2018/06/06/predictwind-and-the-iridium-go/ This will lead you to other articles about the same. We started with SSB/Pactor modem downloading of GRIBS..one forecast model that was usually old news and wrong...but now have the Iridium GO and Predictwind. Maybe someday we will make a video about it.

      @@RVLifeNOW Hi Patrick - I've been watching must of your videos now, and have commented here and there. As I speak swahili .... have forgotten must words ... but lived in Tanzania some years. I have visited most of the Parks in TZ and some in Kenya. Serengiti is probably the most famous and largest park. You need several days there. However my favor place is Ngorongoro. I visited that place many times. It is very steep to drive in and out from. The restaurant above is/was great. I hope they still have "my" Dalmatian dogs there - although probably not. Their names were Chui (Leopard in swahile) and Bibi (Grandma/Swahili or a name in Swedish). Most youngers are few days here and there. Your way is the only possibility to learn whats going on. All people I met in TZ were very nice. No thieved ... a few ... there. Looking forward to seeing you one day. Regards from Kim

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 років тому +2

      There is no bucket big enough, on board, to make it efficient enough. I suppose the chain could be laid out on a dock then sprayed with a bleach solution....I am not sure how the bleach would react with the galvanizing though. Video #12 and #34, the newest, shows ways to clean the chain.

Certainly Sangihe is one of our favorites. Thanks for watching the video. This is something new to do which is proving to be fun work. Patrick, I have been binging on your videos ever since I found you. Appreciate your experience and all the many tips and tricks. I am currently looking for a boat and have been a bit focused on Bob Perry designs. I wonder if you have sailed a Panda 40 or Baba 40 and how they compare to the Valiant 40. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 років тому +1

      No, I have not sailed on any of those boats. It is surprising how similar in so many ways, many of those canoe stern boats are even though they have different designers. The Pacific Seacraft 44, a Crealock design, really looks like a stretched out Valiant 40, a Perry design. They all look to be good boats but personally, the thing I would stay away from is all the exterior teak some boats use. Thanks for joining us.

    Just wondering if you have internet on your boat? Here in the Philippines I use Windy TV for plotting wind, rain and such with google earth as back up, works great for predicting Typhoons and such, that said love your channel, just found it...thank God you dont babble like many on the sailing channels...BTW I love your out of the box thinking...

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  6 років тому +1

      We have internet only when we are near shore and cell towers. At sea, we get weather updates on our Predict Wind over Iridium Go satellites. Iridium Go is not faster than the Single Side Band and Pactor 3 modem but far more reliable. I really like the Predict Wind for the out in the middle of nowhere ocean current information. I don't know where else to get that information. Thanks for the positive comment.

      John, it would be nice to offset the high cost of just the tools required to produce a video and the incredible amounts of time it takes to make a video. I can't fully explain it but I have a hesitation about Patreon. Partly I would feel an obligation to put up "content" on a schedule, like every two weeks. That would defeat the cruising life style we are here for. Rebecca has been putting up affiliate links on our blog site, WhereIsBrickHouse.com and in the video description. Maybe we will start mentioning those links in the videos. We are working on a video to put up this coming Friday, about all the tools in the nav. station including some antiquated tools that are kept as backup.

    Patrick,'
    Once again I do enjoy your insight of sailing preparations and so strongly agree with your methods of what is important... Although I am curious about how long it took to get a permit to get the Ok to get into Chagos and what you had to do to get the permit... I am looking forward to stoping in Chagos in my Indian ocean crossing.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  2 роки тому

      Hi Robert. It changes from year to year…so join the Indian Ocean Crossing group on Facebook…when it’s time for you to sail there. the permit took about a month to get..has to show wreck insurance so if you boat hits a reef there or sinks, it can be taken away… and evacuation insurance to airline you off in an emergency…and a few other things.

    6000 miles with no wzter maker, seriously how did you do that?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  6 років тому +3

      Frodo, Fortunately I was able to sail around the world starting out in 1979, long before RO water makers and chart plotters were thought of. Certainly, sailing is a lot easier these days. We get water from clear streams, clear wells, catch rain, from water faucets ashore. A speck of chlorine does a lot of good. Watch my video "Water, What's In It" and you will see how I test water. I have found city water can be cleaner than the water from many RO systems on sailboats. But be sure to add chlorine to any city water in Thailand.....City water in Malaysia is good. Rain water always needs a little chlorine to keep the airborne mildew and bacteria from growing.

    Have a great passage. What is "better than Gribs"?

    • @nickolson5451
      @nickolson5451 6 років тому

      I believe the comment was in relation to using PredictWind Offshore and having access to gribs from 4 models and using the weather routing function. I believe they will be out of contact for 4-6 weeks. cheers.

    • @Bleemus
      @Bleemus 6 років тому

      Nick Olson Isn't PredictWind just a fancy way of displaying Gribs? They don't have forecasters on staff optimizing any forecasts. The routing feature is great but Gribs are Gribs.

    • @nickolson5451
      @nickolson5451 6 років тому

      Grib is just a data format. I believe the reference was in relation to getting a weather fax which only shows the GFS model. What is better is being able to get 4 models in grib format via PW and the Iridium Go. In the video the GFS did not show the system developing near Chagos, but the other models did, hence having more than one model to reference.

    • @Bleemus
      @Bleemus 6 років тому

      Nick Olson You can get Gribs by Sailmail request from the following sources.
      US National Weather Service (NWS) - a part of NOAA,
      US Navy
      Canadian Met Service
      Météo France
      I agree that PW packages it all nicely but they do not provide any enhanced forecasting ability. They are resellers of free data in a nice interface.

    • @nickolson5451
      @nickolson5451 6 років тому

      I work for PredictWind so can correct you on a few things about PredictWind. The only free weather model we redistribute is the GFS. We run full global models for our proprietary PWG and PWE models every 12 hours (this costs money to do) and pay a lot of money for the rights to distribute the ECMWF in our software. I guess indirectly you are paying for free data with your $250 a year sailmail subscription which floats saildocs.

    Did you have to get a special permit for Chagos?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  6 років тому +1

      Yes, it is not like the old days. The permit can be obtained on line through BIOT, British Indian Ocean Territory. It cost $75 per week for a maximum of 28 days. Also, a yacht must have wreck removal insurance. We have been to so many atolls in the Pacific that the only reason we stopped in Chagos was because it was on my bucket list, like Bikini atoll, Galapagos Is., Rodrigues island, Reunion etc . Otherwise, there is nothing special about Chagos.
