Patrick Childress Sailing ... I haven’t watched that one yet. I hear and get Rebecca’s concerns. I was an actor for about ten years. Some key pointers for Rebecca: 1-Don’t worry about clothing. Anything she feels good in ie; a hat or ponytail for the hair. 2- She might do better setting up the camera and having her be in frame with you. (Like having a conversation with a coffee/tea in hand) 3-Find the fun and game in everything. Ie; bloopers, remember the time when..., MOST IMPORTANT: If you’re in your head and are not feeling like you’re getting it right, talk about what’s there in that moment (omg I feel like I’m tongue tied now!) And get into your body to get out of your head. Do something with your hands or body ie; pushups, squats, do dishes, cleaning. ITS ALWAYS IN THE TASKS THAT HAVE YOU FEEL GROUNDED. That’s why you’re so good. You’re always doing something while you’re speaking. (Almost always) 😉🙏🏼🇨🇦 FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS. ❤️

What Patrick didn't realize was that one of his videos could never be long enough. His passion for sailing, his abundant knowledge, and his calm demeanor, kept you fascinated for hours. I personally learned so very much from him and will be eternally grateful to have learned so much from him. God bless and keep you captain.

I could listen to you for hours. I'm impressed with both the quality of your content and your editing. Keep doing what your doing, or whatever you feel comfortable with producing. Raw / unedited footage can work well sometimes also...makes it easier for you & sometimes people will respond to it well just the same.
I hope you're monetizing the channel somehow, to make it worth your while. You deserve to be paid for your quality content & effort.

He has a story in his head that he just can’t communicate, so he does all the filming and editing himself ;) I just do some of the background stuff to help the video once he releases it. I TRULY wish I could help with the filming and editing but it’s his brainchild..and communication is not his best suit, except perhaps on film. Hey Patrick, great work as always. I didn't think it was too long but I'd say I'm more enthusiastic than average. So I'd say 15mins would be perfect as some folks may lose concentration after that. You're a great resource for aspiring cruisers. Hats off to you both.

Devon, Thanks for the info. I would like to make shorter videos as it generally takes at least 2 hours of editing for each minute of finished video. But often, to complete a video, it has to be more than 20 minutes long. 15 minutes or shorter will be my new target.

Thank you Patrick, a lot of things to weigh into my choice for a world cruiser as I head into retirement in a few years.
Video length depends a lot on the content. I tend to like the 15 - 20 minute videos a little better, but if the content is really interesting, a little longer isn't a bad thing. When the video is about boat maintenance, or in this case, education on what to look for, more is better. If it is scenes of waves and clouds, it can get old quickly. That said, everybody has different taste and what I enjoy will be very different from what other viewers are looking for.

Funny story: I'm 61yo so this was back in the mid-1960s or so. My dad was a chemical engineer so he really didn't deal with metals much, but one day he came back from work with a little pancake of metal about 3 inches in diameter only a 1/4 in thickness. He tossed it our way (me and my younger brother) and said something like "take a look at that." I picked it up. Light, much lighter than I thought. My dad said try to bend it. As soon as tried to bend it, he said toss it back. Then he showed that he couldn't bend it also. I was so impressed that I remember it to this day.

@@RVLifeNOW I can see the appeal to this channel to many people - You and Patrick have so much knowledge sailing over the past 40 years it is a great means to share that with the sailing community. After seeing the sailing resume of both Patrick and you I was even more impressed and eager to listen to what you had to offer. Hopefully others can see that as well.

I will have to check out your info on titanium 5. I also have problems with ss disintegrating on me, mostly on sheet and halyard blocks, the straps and beckets crack. Thanks for the enlightenment on hull walk--I always thought it was from the different water density between the top and bottom of the spinning prop, but your explanation sounds more reasonable--the wash is getting thrown more on one side of the hull than the other, and Bernoulli's principle is creating low pressure there and pulling the boat to one side. Obviously that would make it dependent on hull shape, as you observe. I also went through a similar evolution in anchors--I plowed furrows with a CQR (and nearly lost the boat on several occasions), then went to a Delta which worked much better but still would occasionally drag on me. Now I have a Spade anchor, which is by far and away the best anchor I've ever used--plus no roll bars, so it will fit on bowsprit rollers.

Great to hear from you. We have been far inland , Tanzania, for a while now, safari time. I should have commented on one of your recent videos having 10-15 knots for part of the passage from Bahamas to the Carib. was excellent luck and nice job picking up the mooring nunder sail. On propwalk, dcades ago when I was in a class to get my captains license, the instructor said the boat prop is like a car wheel, if the prop turns clockwise, the stern will go to stb. and counterclockwise, to port. No one considered reality and what the prop wash was doing or left hand verses a right hand prop. Good to hear you agree with my thoughts on the plow anchor. Spade was on our list for a new anchor but in Thailand, our other top anchor choice, Manson, was there at the marine store. Keep up the goog video work!

@@RVLifeNOW Likewise Patrick, I'm impressed with the new vids you have been publishing, and the depth of your knowledge. Another thing you mentioned is the hobby horsing tendency of double enders--yep, Ruth Avery really gets going sometimes, which seriously hampers forward progress when close hauled. The rounded stern apparently helps, although I imagine she must drag it quite a bit when approaching hull speed... As far as the CQR, find a friend who lives ashore and donate--they make great garden decorations! Fair winds .

Hi Patrick, nice video! You have used a lot of outstanding features on your boat especially the starboard ladder. For someone that has a lot of “things” installed on the stern, like windvane and possibly a dinghy on a davits and other stuff, getting into the boat from the stern will be very difficult and your system is very practical and can be used in several situations... well done! Also the Grade 5 titanium pieces used is another great tip... I will for sure use it in the future while preparing my boat for ocean crossing.
As per the video length... in my opinion, something between 12 and 15 minutes (max) is ideal.
For the next video... show us also some tips you used on the inside.
    Fair winds ;)

Patrick, The time is fine for me. I like your videos for showing what works in real life, and what does not. No one else is putting this info out. When you do part 2 could you please discuss how you deal with condensation inside.. Thanks

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  6 років тому

I will write myself a note to mention condensation. There is padding glued to much of the hull, installed by the builder, to help combat condensation. But the biggest majority of our sailing has been in the tropics and condensation has not been an issue. But we will eventually be in S. Africa where it is much cooler and eventually on to very South America, where we can be affected by condensation in those colder latitudes.
