As an electrical engineer, I fully approve of this craziness.
Oh yeah! Great fun and not at all dangerous l!
the pedals that just got quieter or softer were op amp based and the bias is set internally by a voltage reference between the - and + transistors are typically biased directly from the supply reference, hence changing the supply V changes the bias.
great video Andy =]
But you'd still have some effect, as the headroom would be reduced, right? But maybe the difference would be more noticeable if there was a booster pushing the signal
Thank you for this necessary demo, Andy! If anyone else tried buying a Cuvave but (like me) received an M-Wave pedal instead (which is like the Cuvave but not as spitty and gated sounding), using a dying battery simulator like this really wakes up the M-Wave. Spitty and velcro ripping and gated goodness. I now actually have a Cuvave, but the dying battery simulator makes the M-Wave equal or even better than the Cuvave IMO.
Ryan on 60 cycle hum raves about the Cuvave and its gatedness. On some Kate models they'd ommited or swapped out capacitors, many of the Chinese nano brands share the same pcb platform. There's a tutorial on the simple capacitor hack to get the gated sound back. Again I think it's on 60 Cycle hum. Worth considering.
I’m not a fuzz fan but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the video. Great video Andy!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sounded great ! I have a HB 'normal' Power Supply and only saw this afterwards.Well worth the money.
This is awesome info and a great vid, do more of this nerding!!!
The voltage will be a bit high because you're not putting a load on them with the DMM. Cool experiment. I wonder would happen to a wah or trem.
Such a fun video! Thanks for comparing a wide range of fuzzes. A favorite highlight: “Maximum knobage.” Cheers!
Try on SF300 middle position between fuzz1 and fuzz2 switch and you activate both circuit in a same time and its Massive!
I made a sag knob for my SF300 about 8 months ago and the boost setting in bypass on the SF300 is awesome!
Very Cool, Thankyou. My only Fuzz Pedal is a Cuvave and it is so much Fun. Cheers
Brilliant. Great demo. I have to admit that I’m not too into the whole fuzz thing (but I have an SF300!) but it was a lot of fun. I still need to get one of those SAG devices however because I’ve noticed my (and it’s probably a huge cliche) Tube Screamers sound the best shortly before the battery dies. Yeah, the SRV thing. 🤷♂️
Great session, sound wicked good to starv these pedals👍🙏❤️🎸
amazing..i don`t like old school fuzz sounds at all but some of the more modern doom metal fuzz pedals are really worth a try imo! 😎
BTW that satisfaction pedal has open holes to add a capacitor for bass if you're interested in making it sound different, I think there's a spot for diodes too
That was a fun video!
Super fuzz sounds sludgy. Doom! love it. Behringer knocked it outta the park with that pedal. Brilliant indeed. Could you use it in conjunction with JHS' new battery pedal to make even crazier tones?
That was an April fools thing btw lol
I love my carcosa fuzz and I use it with my operation trinity distortion and with a super overdrive in the effects loop. So many options for so many sounds. Also I use the Queequeg supoctaver behind the fuzz pedal and the distortion in front of the fuzz. I just love it. Try out the Warlow from Jupiter Effects and the Orion fx Russlon Fuzz and the hizumitas fuzz sustainer from EarthQuaker Divices ... These are the next fuzz pedals on my list. 😊🤘🔊🔥
Interesting experiment! I still think Big Muffs are better as bass pedals, because of the harmonics it produces. The Cuvave(?)sounds absolutely mental when sagged! Keep on sagging, folks!
You could also try the MXR super badass variac fuzz. It has the voltage variac built in 5V-15V
SF sounds great. I've been using one lately with Met Zone, set like a Rat with a clean boost. Sounded really rich in Harmonics. I watched an EQD vid on the new V.3 Sunn O Life pedal, its uses these 3 elements, as opposed to the Green Ringer on V.1+2. Its worth having a play if you have these pedals.
I just realized that my iso-brick can voltage sag! Cool! 🤘😬👽👽👽
Been wondering over my first fuzz pedal. Never a fan of the Velcro/spitty stuff so I’m veering towards the Boss Waza Fuzz. Seems legit.
So you're advising us to save money by not buying more fuzz pedals but then spend more money on a power supply with a sag function haha awesome 😀😀😀
Best Fuzz I’ve ever tried so far is the MXR classic Fuzz mini 108!
DOD are coming back too, so we might even see an updated Carcosa, given what Tom's done with his fuzz explorations in the years since.
I strongly recommend sagging a mini 9V amp like the ms-2 its one of my favorite sounds.
I did not know this was a thing... I like it, I want it I must get that voltage sag power supply thingy
fyi. that circuit i built is awesome. just ordered a behringer super fuzz.
was the Big Muff Pedal used by John Martyn? He has a song with that title.
I have three of these power supplies (but not with the knobs) under my board. They are excellent and very affordable.
Time for a knobby one for fuzzes!
@@TheGuitarGeek I hope you are sitting down. Ready?
I don’t own any fuzz pedals.
Well I picked up a used EHX germanium od for $50... so HA, jokes on you! AND the pedal I'm using it with is the joyo california. trying to experiment with adding a mini ego atm
Lizard Queen sounds awesome sagged!
Wow !!!
Funny how they make specific sag power units now. I have a drawer full of $15 universal wall-wart power adapters from the 80s and 90s that had a switch for polarity and a switch to vary the voltage from 1.5 to 12. I used to buy one every time I bought a new pedal.
Ryan is scared to run his delays through the volture JHS sent him maybe you can give them a try!! Love you brother and have a blessed day!!! I am like you I like them all!!!
First: A Marshall SV20H yesterday, now a Sheriff 25? Long live the Plexi! But come on, please make a review as well!
Second: I've read in some of my pedal manuals (Catalinbread RAH maybe??) that I can go up from the 9V but never had the courage to do so. Maybe you could be the man for the delicate task
THE FUZZ GAME BECOME EVEN FUZZIER!
thank you a million times for this inspiring video! ❤
I instantly ordered a sag device (not hb though 🫣 ordered from local builder Pedaltree 😇)
You’re welcome. Enjoy it
Support your local builders. They often innovate, the market is saturated at present and components are increasingly more expensive and scarce.
You should try some Wren and Cuff stuff. Best muff-based fuzzes I’ve heard. Their Box of War is outstanding.
The ehx satisfaction plus is great I just got one it's excellent
For some reason, UA-cam decided that the video quality on this video should also be "sagged" so I had to watch the whole thing in 360p for about 20-ish minutes before it went up to 1080p again. But either way, not a single bad/unusable tone here. There's a context somewhere where all of these sounds have a place. Even the Big Muffs!
Btw, I think one of the knobs on the Carcossa is a bias control which kinda does the starving the voltage thing by design? Maybe I'm wrong, idk!
interesting that you liked these tones so much. I didn't think other people would also dig these tones(except the obvious ones). it kinda gives me an idea caz I went through a stint of making wacky pedals. Didn't know what to do about them tho caz the sounds were so weird. Do you think people would be down for something like a wacky pack of pedals? If I 3d printed cases(for cost & easy fast customization) and included like 6 or 12 pedals of strange random sounds for like $100 or 200$ ? I imagine it might be cool to make the packs unique. Like some pedals would be truly a one of a kind. a gamble of sorts... The packs would have some consistent designs and some super random / not duplicable / truly unique...
yeah, i kinda nerd out on electrical engineering oddities. I made some weird sh8 like pedals that had water in place of components. thin strips of metal as resonators, using back to back tape heads as isolation transformers, using the human body in place of capacitors... yeah weird stuff... just was having phun. At the time I couldn't take it serious or grasp the concept of selling dysfunctional sound... but given how interested you were with those broken tones !! it reminded me of that phase I went through.
Loved this with Big Muff (pie), recirculating through after other pedals in 1977/78. But, didn't have enough brains to install a voltage regulator so gave up on it.
Any drive can use this technique. My DOD FX55B Supra Distortion turned into a fuzz with a drained battery. It had a hell of a ripping velco sound.
I liked the Carcosa and Field Marshal. Behringer too. You didn't use my favorite, the Keely Fuzz Bender. Dieing battery in it is pretty good.
Is that a "Useless box" I see in the background on the rack? If so that's awesome, I love mine.
It certainly is!
Hi,
I thought of the experiment you did, and the main problem with this king of setup is the way you test it. When you drop only the voltage the transistor circuit, get lower voltage in proportion so the result is less gain, less volume.
What I thing you should try is:
To get a lab power suplly and reduce the current and not the voltage, this may get the transistors to anoter work point, and maybe give a different sound.
Good luck!
This test is perfectly valid. If you make that current test, let me know!
@@TheGuitarGeek I have only a multi effect (Boss GT-100), so I can't test it.
The test it valid but, it woth to try limmiting the current.
Anyhow thanks for the replay, and the video's!
Octa Hive wins here but octave fuzz is the best effect by miles so it makes sense.
many power supplies provide SAG toggles, such as the ones on voodoo labs power supplies.
Having been doing this for some years, I can save you some time; it's not going to make a lame fuzz better, but it can provide some good alternatives on a solid one .
The Carcosa and FZ 1, both of which I've had @ one time, don't lose volume like a simpler circuit, because they aren't voltage dependent, and don't feature the balance of signal strength versus resistance and clipping.I'd thought the FZ would be more sensitive and reactive, but was overall disappointed.Generally speaking though, I'm not a TB fan beyond the Mk.2.The Carcosa, like the Looking Glass, is an overall better DOD effort, but I thought it lacking compared to other similar designs, despite a bit of hype.
Not surprising to me as it is by far my favorite drive/pre, the Hudson Broadcast is stellar from higher voltages to very low; the Ramble FX Twin Bender is also responsive. The Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory is reactive, but it is also seemingly a fragile circuit that might not like too much experimentation.
I‘m very sorry to be THAT person, but my understanding has always been that the electronic effect is indeed called starving a circuit which results in the audio effect called sagging, which means that a power amp will just flop out instead of following the input amplitude. The results being a kind of compression, added harmonics and overall looseness. Basically, the natural version of Jimmy Hendrix maxing out the volume mere minutes before the amp goes boom or intentional tinkering by Eddie van Halen with the variac in front of his amp.
In fuzzes, you can really hear how starved for juice they are when they start gating. At that point, the dynamics are reduced to on/off.
I have a Fender "The Trapper" fuzz and the 2nd channel has a kind of "spluttery" vibe to it, which I'm assuming is trying to emulate this effect. I didn't like it at first, but it's growing on me.
Splendid video.
I don't know which was my favourite. i just....don't know.
Can we agree that the satisfaction is not great? Then we can go from there!
@@TheGuitarGeek You can have that point for sure.
@@TheGuitarGeek technically, Satisfaction is amazing............at Satisfaction. But that's it! 😅
More fuzz here than a top shelf 80's mag.
Seems to me that the much hated EH Satisfaction pedal might sound better using a guitar with single coil pickups, specifically a telecaster, considering it was made to produce the sound from the Rolling Stones song of the same name which was most likely recorded using a telecaster....but then again is that really a "better" sound lol!
edit - holy smokes that cuvave pedal is the shizznit!
hi . just want to know if you have demos of DOLAMO Vintage 11? thanks
Use that sag circuit on different modulation
Have you had a chance to try the new Satisfaction? It has some additional controls. Curious to hear you thoughts.
It will be arriving any day now. I’ll make a video and it HAS to be better than the original
The least expensive sag mod is a voltage divider. A resistor and a diode.
On the Behringer SF300 Super Fuzz there is a hidden mode between Fuzz 1 and Fuzz 2
ive built 4 voltage sag circuits. 10k potentiometer works best. i built a 5 and 20k version for posterities sake but 10 is best 20k might work on certain circuits
I had just looked at a voltage sag pedal from Five Cats, thought it looked interesting, i fire up youtube and the first video in my feed is this!
Do i win a prize?
Which of.the fuzzes in the video is closest to a silicone fuzzface?
Tonebender dying: it’s not odd if it has a chip that requires a certain voltage to operate. I don’t know that it does but as an engineer that’s certainly the first thought I had.
Brown out with ya fuzz out, even my REVV G3 does it so some extent.
3:03 😂 Go watch something by John Mayer or something, lol 🤘
Instead of twisting around on your tiny knob, why not set the different outputs and just plug it into the separate outputs?
I thought about this but it would have meant a LOT of turning the amp on and off to stop popping
From an engineering standpoint, i feel like we could make an Inline voltage drop with rheostat to adjust for relatively low monies. Nah, this is easier and cheaper. 😂
Hahahaa I was wondering the same thing and realised that money dictates this choice
@Terry English I always thought this would work, I'm only an amateur hackers but my concern is that sending the surplus power to ground will get hot?
I have never got along with any EHX pedal. Got rid of every one I’ve ever owned.
Oh and also - ALL HAIL CARCOSA!!!
You can do the same with an MXR ISO Brick and it will actually be isolated unlike the cheap rebranded Chinese OEM power supply that Harley Benton prints their logo on and sells at a mark-up.
You sound angry!
Hold up... That wasn't John Mayer in the thumbnail of this video?
Should dime the gain on the Rat to get to its fuzz setting…
cool, now I just need a midi switchable Sagulator.... 🙄
I dont think it will measure exact voltage without a *load
A like for Sagat's tiger inclusion.
Tiigerrr uppercut!
Tiger!
I sag the s... out of my Fuzz Face, it's superb 👌
You did what to those poor innocent pedals??
Im pretty sure thats illegal in about 52 states here in the USA😢
I'm guessing that this video was a ploy to show the p/s because I can't believe you didn't know this was something.
I've used a fairly crappy multi voltage p/s with dirt pedals for almost the entirety of the near 40 years I've been abusing stringed instruments.
the mofo sag method: puncture your cab speakers^^
I don’t enjoy fuzz pedals, so yeah, what am I doing here?!???
So you think you can Fuzz!?!?!?!?!
Fuzz usually sounds dreadful, but this takes it to another level of awfulness! I'll stick with cleaner sounds.
That EHX Satisfaction is a one trick pony that doesn't know any tricks...
I bought the Cuvave Fuzz off of Ryan's recommendation, and it is a normal boring fuzz. No gating whatsoever... So disappointed...
Cuvave changed it…
This is going much too far
Starving poor FUZZes by cutting down the nutrition is "cruelty to dumb pedals"
Shame on you
And using SAG as a sad euphemism. Those poor transistors! 😢
