I don't know. The only reason I could think of is that the laser measures are more expensive. They usually have one at these events up in the office. At one of the Pintys events a couple years ago, it was tied ever after the laser
They can't be that expensive, we have two at my club. I'm guessing they maybe have a ruling that this is the only measuring device to be used and ruled with so that discrepancies between the two device can't and won't be argued about. Just a guess though.
they are far less reliable than you'd think, thats usually why they use the stick first, then use the laser only if its too close for the stick to be precise.
There is absolutely no reason they dont use digital measuring so they are not guessing at a titch over and a smidge under. Also GO SLOWER and let the teams actually see the number.

@@nolanmcleod2619 Just replace the indicator on the existing stick with a digital one. You can get them for 20 bucks from shars. 100 for a good one. If they are good enough for CNC machinists, they should work for curling.
@@notsofresh8563 I wonder if the issues is that it takes a bit longer to aim a laser accurately while the stick moving like a compass as it does is much more simple. If there was an aimbot laser that could get it perfect everytime, I'd be SO down for this Ah nvm, I reread your comment. Putting it on a stick would certainly solve the problem, just have it register the absolute closest part of the rock, yeah
I was at this game and was dumbfounded on how fast the first official called it. He went past the red rock way to fast to even call it
What is up with these officials measuring it so fast??

Laser measurements make for boring television. The old school measures are more entertaining to watch
