By NHL rules, this is a great call. A player can not put his hand in front of the goalie's face. I know it was brief, but that's the way it is. These rules even apply to the Philadelphia Flyers.
@@larsbar8 It was a bad call. Fact. If the ref wanted to call a penalty, it should've been when it happened. Instead, he did nothing, then 2 or 3 seconds later, decides it's not a goal. No matter how you look at it, it's a bad call. If I slash you and break your stick, and the ref doesn't call it, then I score a few seconds later, and the ref then decides that he wants to give me a penalty, it's a bad call. Also, this rule falls under goalie interference. That's like saying I bump the goalie, he stumbles, gets himself back in position way too fast for it to be a non-goal if scored, I'm no longer near him, then we score a few seconds later and they wave it off. Same thing. This was factually a bad call by bad bad refs. Anyone that thinks otherwise either just hates the Flyers, or they don't play hockey. Oh, I used to be a goalie. This should've been a goal. 100% indisputably.
If they called this then would a player who's pointing to somewhere in the corner and his hand happens to obstruct the goalie's view be penalized as well? Because if yes, that's a moronic rule and should be removed immediately.
The Avery rules states you have to be facing the goaltender to be "unsportsmanlike" like he was. Pronger didn't break the avery rule in this case because he was still attempting to make a play. The official wording of the "Avery Rule" "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play,"
Lobstertainment He did look back at the goalie before putting his hand up, which could constitute "facing the goalie." At the point where he's looking back and putting his hand up, he clearly is not trying to prepare to deflect a shot. It might be a minimal violation, but it is a violation.
To all those speculations: The goal was back then legal. The night later the NHL changed the rulebook so this "play" would be illegal, too. Prior to that you had to TURN AROUND to interfer with the goalie, which Pronger didn't. After the change you this was not a necessary criterium. Indeed Kipper slashed him in the feet which should be 2 minutes aswell. In combination with the "late" call there are 3 decisions which are all against the flyers on pure reputation.
Instant_Classic98 so check out in which place the flyers penalties are year after year. Check out gagnes disallowed goal vs the sens a few years ago. Then check the pens goal vs the canes. I'm sorry but some (!!!) Refs are whistling one-sided. Reputation calls are f.e. charging for rinaldo. I don't hold his exclusively for the flyers, but they for sure tend to be soft-called.
I'm not gonna pretend I've read the official NHL rule book or anything, but my interpretation of the "Avery Rule" is that you can only screen a goalie by establishing body position in front of their crease, using your body to do it, not with your stick or your hands. If someone does happen to have the rule handy I'd like to read it.
ohhhh riiiight, "when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender AND engages...." he was totally facing the goalie, great call! To be added on top of that, that ruling is not in the nhl rule book itself, that was said in a press release and is still to this day not in the book.
The whole thing happened in a second or so, the slow motion replay looks like he had plenty of time but if a goaltender can't see the shot when it launches, he'll have a tough time reacting to it.
The goal happened mere seconds after Pronger used his hand to screen the goalie, the referee didn't have time to react. It isn't when the call is made, it's when it was supposed to be made.
This is the right call, and needs to be called in the future as well.... otherwise players will stop actually playing hockey and just send someone out to jump around in front of the goalie to block their vision
A Flyers fan here… I remember that and I was only pissed that the ref didn't call the penalty until after the goal. His arm didn't go up when it happened. You never make a call based on the outcome. If you are going to call something….Then call it. Not wave it off, then change your mind after what happened 3 seconds later.
In this case, you would call the call based on the outcome, if there was no shot or goal or whatever, then would you think it's fair to be assessed a penalty that had no impact on the play? Source: Certified Referee for BC Hockey
what i dont get is A) the penalty wasn't called when it happened, and B) Kiprusoff was more distracted by slashing prongers legs then by the hand, which happened roughly 4 seconds before the shot was even taken
What an awful call. If the hand gesture was the reason, then call it immediately, not after the puck is in back of the net. M. Kiprusoff was the one who decided to slash Chris Pronger and then wasn't able to react to the shot quick enough.
If the play didn't result in a goal, the penalty wouldn't be assessed, because it didn't have any affect on the play, however, even thought it wasn't extremely distracting, it's considered distracting, therefore making an effect on the play. I believe the reason Kiprusoff didn't have a penalty called against him was because he had no intent to injure the player, and his actions didn't stop him from attempting to screen him Source: Certified Referee for BC hockey
good call you cannot wave your hand or stick in front of the goalies face eand blocking his view on the play.. doesn't matter if you are facing him or not or if the shot comes later. good call
good goal. That was completely different than the avery incident. He wasn't dancing and antagonizing, he put his hand up. For all they know he could have been pointing to something.
You can prevent player from blocking goalies vision when he is standing right in front of him, but when he blocks it with hand there's no way you can prevent that.
But Avery was turned away from the play, and had his back to the puck. Avery waved his stick all over the place. This player was watching the puck, and played normally.
Refs screwed this up only because they didn't call it right away. It also really didn't have a lot to do with the puck actually going in, since kipper was paying more attention to slashing pronger's legs than squaring up to the puck..... But at the same time, you can't have players waving their hands like that. If they don't call this penalty, then players around the league will start putting hands in goalie's faces while facing away.. that can't happen.
yeah, it just bothers me when people say it's a rule and it's clearly not called "by the rules". Pronger was definitely distracting/screening and he is a massive pest, I just believe the majority of refs wouldn't make that call, but as you said almost anything is subjective in rule 75 that involves any sort of misbehavior, I just think it would have been something better discussed after the game, not at such a pivotal moment as players can only be expected to follow rules that are in the book
What I don't understand is that a goalie can slash a player and get away with it just because he waved at him. It's a double standard for goalies being called on things like that vs players being called
Maybe they should make screening 'interference' if this is a penalty. Look at Avery: back to the play, waving his stick and putting his hands out for a full thirty seconds. Look at Pronger: facing the play, and his hand comes out for ONE second. He could have just as easily been calling for the puck behind the boards because Briere wasn't covered. Kiprusoff saw the shot and and missed it. Incidental contact does more to disrupt a goalie than this, and that's not a penalty.
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play."
In the rule book it is said that the penalty ( or any other ref decision ) is made official when the ref sees it - that's before the ref raises his arm or uses the whistle.
In a play like this one of the determining factors is whether or not a goal is scored, if there were no goal scored there wouldn't have been a penalty.

tendersl21 It's not a screen when you're waving your hand in front of the goalies face you idiot. That is called unsportsmanlike. If he just stood there then no problem.
yes he put the hand in front of the face but long before the goal happened, the hand was there a few seconds before the shot and the goal, it was not in front of his face when the shot came so it should have been a good goal.
did you not see him waving his hand infront of the goaltender "when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposing goaltender and engages in actions such as WAVING HIS ARMS or stick infront of the goaltenders face" he clearly had his hand infront of the goaltenders face
@DQh0ck3y97 yeah he looked back to see where kipper was. BUT pronger was facing the play unlike avery. if anything pronger put himself in the disadvantage because it's easier to look over a hand then it is looking over or around a body and he only has one hand on his stick so it could prevent him from tipping the puck or dishing in a rebound. As a hockey fan rules like this make me sick because all it does is water down the game and is only in place to shut the media up
*Shoots puck* *GOAL* *Called off* Reason: Waving your stick on the ice. It is all there in the Avery rule. You are not allowed to do anything when I have big money riding on the other guys winning!
Avery did not get a penalty on the play, you know why? He basically forced the NHL to make a rule based on that play ( there was none in place at the time). Pronger got penalized for the Avery rule, made a year earlier.
No, goalies get slashing penalties. If they're going to discount a goal like this, they should start calling the other penalties happening right in front of their face. Have you ever been slashed by a goalie from behind?

he literally had his hand up for 1.5 seconds. When Avery did it he was facing Brodeur and putting his hand right in his face. Dumb call. And Kiprusoff was just upset he got beat because if he made that save he wouldnt be complaining about pronger.
If that's goalie interference, then they should also call Fan interference for screaming so loud. The rule is as much of a joke as Sean Avery, who is the cause of all this.
the goalie took himself out of the play by reacting, if pronger was staring at the goalies eyes and really really blinding him then I could see it but his back was towards the goalie and he stuck his hand out. that's a goal all day long. anybody know who won that game?
Not exactly a fan of Pronger... but with the length of time between him putting his hand up, and when the actual shot was taken, there's no way Prongs obstructed Kippers view of the shot. Don't think that shoulda been called, but that's just me
You're not allowed to give the goalie a hand job.
9pt9 Not true. Even after Avery's antics, he still continued giving out handjobs.
Lol
Excuse me RUSSLE, but , I believe I requested the hand job..😉😂😂
Looking back at the seasons when he used to play, I think we can all agree that Chris Pronger's entire career was an unsportsmanlike penalty.
He met a fitting end, and that tells me karma really is a nasty bitch.
By NHL rules, this is a great call. A player can not put his hand in front of the goalie's face. I know it was brief, but that's the way it is. These rules even apply to the Philadelphia Flyers.

i thought the rule was you couldnt face the goalie like avery did, i have no idea tho

he was signaling to his teammate "put the puck here"
I'm sure all of you couch officials know the NHL rule book better then the on ice official.
LMAO XD . yes we do
It's the Avery rule, and the right call.
Was the non call on the slash to the back of the knee a good call too?
The slash was after the interference. Goalies usually get allowed the one slash, but it is a slash.
The Avery rules states you have to be facing the goaltender to be "unsportsmanlike" like he was. Pronger didn't break the avery rule in this case because he was still attempting to make a play.

gturner38 Positions himself to face the goaltender is the literal interpretation of the rule, looking over your shoulder briefly is not doing that.
Back when Richards could score a goal...
