    Even though he was a fine British gentleman, I as a Finn consider him as 'one of our own'. Sir Stirling was someone whom I looked up to and whom I respected very highly. I still do. Thank you Sir Stirling Moss for everything you have done for motor racing and everyone involved with it, you will be remembered with warmth and love, especially among true racers and those who love motor racing.

    I cannot let Stirling Moss go without saying goodbye,because I grew up with him as my hero of the racetrack,reading about his exploits year after year,ever the perfect gentleman,and modest to a fault. Farewell,Sir Stirling! You lived through a great time for this country,and you always gave your best. Your name will always be at the top of England's greatest drivers and sportsmen. R.I.P.

    I had the luck/honour, whatever to get Stirling's autograph sometime in the 1950s, see him practising at Brands Hatch in the Rob Walker Cooper doing perfect drifts in the 60s, and catch him driving a Smart in the pits at Silverstone in the 80s (or 90s).

    Just to review, Stirling Moss won the 1955 Mille Miglia, arguably his greatest achievement. The MM was a 1000 mile all-out race (not the TSD rally it is today) on narrow Italian country roads. It was a big loop from Rome to Brescia and back. Italian drivers, having the advantage of familiarity with these roads, nearly always won.
    The Mercedes team entered four cars, all 300 SLRs (essentially a W196 GP car with full bodywork). The rules allowed for a passenger. Some drivers had one, some didn't. It was up to the driver. Moss and Herrmann had passengers, while Fangio and Kling drove their SLRs solo. The passenger made the car heavier and therefore slower, but he could also be quite handy.
    Moss had the diminutive Denis Jenkinson ('Jenks') as his passenger. Everyone 'practiced' prior to the event, but the roads were not closed for that. Normal traffic, including horse or mule-drawn carts, might be around any bend. Crazy! Moss and Jenks did six recon laps, during which Jenks took copious and detailed notes about the circuit, and put them all on a large roll of paper. This was something that, to my knowledge, had never been done before. So Jenks was the first example of what we would call a 'co-driver' today.
    Verbal communication was impossible at speed. They worked out a system of hand-signals so that Jenks could let Moss know what was coming up.
    Together, they took off from Rome, in this full-bodied Grand Prix car without seat belts, let alone any other form of safety equipment. Trusting each other with their lives, they won, completing the race in just over ten hours of continuous flat-out motoring. Jenks only missed giving one signal during the entire event, when fuel spilled down his back.
    Their average speed was 98 mph! This was truly incredible in 1955, given the primitive tires, and the crude roads, of the time. Jenks was in awe of Moss' skill, and his total commitment. He would keep his foot down even when couldn't see what was coming up, based only on these hand-signals. That is real bravery.
    After the event, Moss found he wasn't feeling tired, so he promptly drove non-stop back home from Italy to England.

    Yep my favourite Driver, bar non, he was called Stirling Moss Ltd because of his money deals for driving for teams, although he always said he always wanted to drive a Brit car , his real name is Moses ! the family are Jewish , but altered the name , 7 is my lucky number as well , got a birthmark on my chest showing a 7. Bon Voyage Stirling !!

    While his father did compete in the 1924 Indy 500, is it known why Stirling Moss himself never competed in the Indy 500 over the course of his racing career (when even Fangio competed in the 1958 race followed by other F1 drivers)?
    Stirling Moss comes across as a driver that in better circumstances could have easily won the Triple Crown of Motorsport, due to having won at Monaco (in 1956, 1960 and 1961) as well as almost becoming F1 Champion and almost winning at the Le Mans 24 Hours (in 1953 and 1956).

    • @Jahn89
      @Jahn89 4 роки тому +1

      In an interview with Autosport Sir Stirling has stated he would have liked to compete in the Indy 500. But in his time it was not feasible as it meant taking too much time off. You had to be there for the whole month of May. So it just did not work out because if he went to Indy he would miss as least four races Moss might very well have won.

    • @wickiezulu
      @wickiezulu 4 роки тому

      @@Jahn89 Thanks. In hindsight it might have been doable in 1957 and 1959 based off of his F1 results that season had he been willing to miss Monaco (unless he had other non-F1 commitments those years in May), along with possibly a one-off appearance at any point between the 1964-1968 Indy 500s during the F1 invasion.

    Bloody hell! overtaking Coopers in the wet, in a 250F!
    Ironically, the car he's driving is 250F serial number 2528, one of the "Lightweight" 1957 works cars, and the same car that very nearly denied him and Tony Brooks their historic British GP win in 1957. Jean Behra drove that very car in the race and is having a healthy lead when it broke down.

      2) pride of place on my wall is a wonderful photo in profile of Surtees, Hill, Clark, and Moss. They are in profile, pulling onto a starting grid...their expressions are all different, and yet the same: laser focused on the task at hand. Sir Stirling has the tiniest trace of a grin...
