For my 50th birthday, I decided to give myself a challenge: get out of the box and learn some jazz guitar. It has not been easy, but then again, that was the whole point. You made this new difficulty a pleasant experience. God bless you.
Thanks Matt! Glad it was helpful!
Good for you!

Great Lesson! I like how you separated the lesson from all the fancy stuff they do with this guitar part. It's nice to get that down before moving into more complicated parts to it. Thank you!
My pleasure! Glad you liked it!
Superb lesson. Concise and accurate. All you lessons are great Mark.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very Fine.
Thanks!
Great lesson Mark! I really like how you structure the lessons. It shows that you are putting a lot of time and effort into your channel these days. Nice!
Thanks! 😃
great video really dig the chords nice chord diagrams also
Thank you!
I was listening to Deacon Blues (one of my all-time favorite songs) on the SiriusXM radio. I did a search on Google for the chords and up popped your Video. I smiled knowing you would show us the way... I think I'm becoming your biggest fan... The chord link on this video goes to a dead end. I'm assuming I might find it on your website being a member, but I screened shot all your diagrams during the Video... Thanks Mark
Thanks a ton Kevin! Glad to help.
Nice thank you
My pleasure Andy. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the lesson. My knowledge of jazz voicings is limited and I have been trying to build it up, so this really helped with chords I couldn't quite completely piece together. Your ear is excellent. Man - those players on those Steely Dan albums are exquisite. My next task is to learn all those little fills Carlton places throughout the song. What a tune!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Nice.
Thanks!
Thanks for this lesson. Been meaning to learn this one for a while.
I still think of E7b9 as the "She's So Heavy" chord. It's such a tense voicing and perfectly complements Lennon singing "driving me mad..." Anyway, cool to see it in another great albeit very different song.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and for the insightful comment.
Oh yeah, this is a good one. I enjoy all SD, can't play much of it. I have learned bits and pieces.
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks Mark! SD is my favorite band! I really enjoyed your Don’t Take Me Alive note for note (and everything else you do for us)! Thanks again brother! 🎸🙏🏿
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much. Don't hesitate to make a suggestion or two!
Thanks! I would love to see you do the chords and solo to Home at Last!
@@arunviswanathan5555 I'll put it on the list of songs to consider. Thanks!
AJA! Easily one of my top ten "Desert island" albums, Mark! Jim C.
Love it! My "Dan" album pick would either be Katy Lied or Royal Scam, but I like Aja a lot too.
Hey Mark great video could you make one on the licks throughout the song?
Thanks! I'll think about doing a lesson on some of the fills.
i was just gonna comment and.. bam..... ya took the words right of ma mouth.....cool voicings ....strike up the saxaphone
LOL!
BTW, thanks for on screen chords. For those of us who watch these on our phones.
Glad you liked it! Lots of work, but I like how it turned out as well. Kept the voicings fairly simple. I think they sound better that way, but a benefit is that they're easier to play cleanly too.
Hey Mark...I see that I posted on this a year ago...Just revisiting this great song...I would also like to make a request...Maybe you can do a lesson on a tune with Mike Bloomfield and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band...? Cheers...Mark
Hi Mark. Anything in particular? A lick or phrase or way of playing that you find intriguing or influential?
Thanks man! Is there no link to a chorus ?
Thanks! Yes, sorry. I haven't done a video for the rest of the song yet.
Nice , I always wanted to know these chords.
Thanks! But c'mon brother, give me a little credit for using a Strat on this. You know how difficult that is for me! :)
@@MarkZabel You should have bought a new 335 for Steely Dan.
@@jimmuller One 335 isn't enough???? :)
@@MarkZabel I noticed that Mark , I think deep down inside your a strat guy... embrace it!!!
@@tbone2451 LOL!
Aight so, I just got my guitar two weeks ago. Should I attempt this? 😂 what do y’all say?
always felt like the Hendrix chord in the turnaround was tongue in cheek intentional
Ca you do the rest of the song?
I put in on the list of additional songs to consider. Thanks for listening.
Sorry to write this Mark I have never heard of this song. Sounds like a cool jazzy type song. Is this a lesser-known steely Dan song however I have heard of dirty work? So I do know- who
Steely Dan is.
Please pick up the album Aja .....you’ll not regret it.
@@uspsdaveable ok I will listen to it.
No problem Matt. "Deacon Blues" was a fairly big hit from Steely Dan off of their album, Aja (pronounced like "Asia"). Aja reached #3 on the US Billboard charts (their highest) and "Deacon Blues" was the 3rd single off of it, reaching #19 on Billboard in the US. "Peg" and "Josie" were also singles from that album.
"Aja" isn't to everyone's taste - definitely jazzy and not as guitar-oriented as "The Royal Scam". "Deacon Blues" is actually one of their more popular songs from their most popular album!
very hip band dirty work is a great track.....but dig deeper this is just one of many gems
I can’t find the link for the chords
Here you go. In the future, it's always linked in the description (if tab/chart exists). Get Tabs & Charts: tinyurl.com/ybpzjuwm
i think ill save this till i get the nerve to try it LOL, thanks arggh why are piano chords so un finger friendly on guitar
Hi John. I've simplified most of these to 4 note chords without much stretch, so they're very guitar friendly. I bet if you give this a whirl you'll find most of them are comfortable for you.
But LOL! I know what you mean about the piano chords.
Bm7(+5) ??? How about calling it G2/B
Whatever floats your boat. I prefer Bm7+5 here instead of Gadd9/B, as the +5 is the voice that's being held constant from the Cmaj7.
@@MarkZabel I hear what you're saying .... Yes, the note "G" is common to both chords; however, this musical coincidence has no effect on vertical designation (how to label the chord). Personally, I am hesitant to use the +5 symbol with MINOR chords. I'm more accustomed to seeing +5, +9, -5, -9, etc., with DOMINANT chords, (i.e., "altered" dominants).
@@T._Matthew_Phillips Okay.
