- Playing all guitars from Steely Dans Kid Charlemagne with chords and tabs for solo. No talking as usual.
The guitar solo by jazz fusion guitarist Larry Carlton was ranked #80 in the list of the 100 greatest guitar songs by Rolling Stone, stating "In the late seventies, Steely Dan made records by pushing a revolving crew of monster session dudes through take after take, which yielded endless jaw-dropping guitar solos. Larry Carlton's multi-sectioned, cosmic-jazz lead in this cut may be the best of all: It's so complex it's a song in its own right."

...is there gas in the car? yes, there's gas in the car.
Best lyric ever!
@John Galt Dough it's likely that an authenticity of the unpredictability in real life brings identification to the listener.
That, and how humorous these characters truly are when viewed from outside and above these situations they find themselves navigating, makes following their stories irresistible.
No…it isn’t.
Kid Charlemagne, coolest lyrics and music by my Bard bros.
I know that was a ton of work so thanks a million for that awesome song, playing, and tabs!!!!!!
Really great work!!!
Awesome..... Showing the chords and seeing you play it out as well as the tabs for the solo. Excellent ! ..... I don't know how long it took you to record this but thank you for sharing, you've made it much easier for me to learn and practice.
This is what a play along lesson is supposed to be!!! Well done and thank you!!!
This is why Steely Dan is one of the best bands.
I always vibrated on this song! Respect !
Thx for the tabs! Couldnt figure out the chords during the solo for the life of me.
This lesson plugs the holes of the tab I was using with all the chords underneath each pattern. Thank you so much
You are my Steely Dan Chord GURU. THANKS
No, I am.
Thanks man. You're the only video playing the chords behind the solo. My kid on the keyboard is taking the solo so I need to learn the backing parts.
You've changed my life. I always wanted to play Steely Dan the right way. Thank you
*Wow!* I've been playing over 30 years and this the best thing since the clip-on digital tuner.
Really nice work Jonathan. Can’t ever get enough of that Carlton solo, so cool. Great job!
yeah man, he's talented!
Yes! I agree...
THANX Johnathan this is exactly what I was looking for in my musical quest Shalom
Great tutorial! I like the ways you display the chords as you go along. More importantly, I appreciate watching how much you enjoy playing this song! Thanks for sharing
i LOVE your Steely Dan playthroughs, i appreciate them more than you know!
Thanks for tabbing this out, I really appreciate it. I finally got the outro down.
oh yea buddy im burning this in memory cant believe the chords are that easy DOH !
GREAT JOB
Best guitar instruction videos on the Tube - you're the man JE!
Thank god for the real musicians on here that keeps it from getting stale for us hacks
I'm a guitarist who was asked to play bass in a band doing a lot of Steely Dan, and other bands with horns...I really enjoy jamming along with your videos as I'm trying to learn to play bass with (you) and SD. Great work, you're an excellent guitarist!
Much appreciated. Thanks for going to such efforts.
dude! Larry Carlton is so dope!!!!! great job
Thank you for posting this excellent video of this great song! Even though I have played guitar for 42 years, your video did help me with this song. I have always figured out how to play songs by ear. I really liked how you played while having the chords showing on the screen. It was so helpful. Thanks again for posting this! :)
I've seen simpler tabs of the chords for much of this song, but I feel like this is closer to how Carlton would play this type of progression; he likes his rich full chord sounds. Nice work.
I've been working on this solo for a couple of weeks now and I have to say, you make it look so easy! It's not the easiest solo even for an advanced (not expert) player.
Nice. Will definitely be working on this one
My new favourite video ever
Good job. I learned a lot. Thanks
Great ,great job , many thanks
Thank you great work
thanks a bunch. Great job and great playing
I'm so glad that UA-cam suddenly suggested one of your videos (Peg). These are really fantastic and useful. Great work, sir!!
Well Done !
Great playing , thanks for breaking this timeless tune down .
Much gratitude
This is super solid.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for all your hard work. This is incredible and truly appreciated🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💜💜💜
The original BrEAkinG BAd song 🎶
Indeed! You may find it fitting that I was always under the impression it was about Owsley, the infamous pioneer acid chemist who cultivated a loyal customer base by making outstanding acid while traveling the World as the Grateful Dead's sound man, where he poured excess profits into the Dead's PA system until it was the biggest and best / (most "hi fi") in the World. Although primarily focused on Ken Kesey & Co., Tom Wolfe writes about Owsley and the beginnings of the Dead in his book The Electric Kool Aide Acid Test, as it was usually Owsley's acid that initially propagated the embryonic West Coast psychedelic scene, including the 18 actual "acid test" counterculture parties, from '65 to '68.
So good man. Love your voicing on every chord.
the chord pictures on the right helped a lot. thanks for this video!
I like all your videos especially Steely Dan songs. Thanks for breaking it down.
Nice. Been looking for the chords at the end of the song
Check out Fingerprints by Larry Carlton if you already haven't. Serious treat for guitarist. Also, Lee & Larry collaboration. Very well done. Loved it. Great Job.🤗🎸💞👍
wow, i've never seen anyone make this look easier
Perfect playing. Great job!!
thanks a lot for this great interpretation with all the tricks and licks that gobwith it. Very helpful for learning. Cheers mate
Truly beautiful, congratulations. You rocked this fuckin masterpiece of music
really nice job, thanks for posting
Good on ya Mate! Easy to follow, I'm learning a lot from you.
Thanks for sharing !!
The problem really isn’t the solo itself, it’s that it’s impossible for the rest of the band to learn what’s played underneath. Thanks for the transcription
Exactly I've written to like five top instructors on UA-cam, who all mysteriously leave out that rhythm.. so I straight to the point asked if they could break it down.. none have done it. 😅
great great job....ty
Great job.
Nice work on the song’s chords
Awesome!
You are worthy of your guitar and your guitar is worthy of you.
Great tutorial! Thanks for showing it to us.
that rocked and was easy to follow - great job. thank you
rockin the beard
Thanks!
Very well done to say the least. Kudos!
Cool!
NICE!
Great work, you even kind of look like Becker!
Strong work Jonathan. I'm a guitarist recruited to play bass. We are doing this tune and My Old School. I gotta know the chords to get my B-lines down. Thanks man!
excellent tutorial many thanks
Great work, thanks always wanting the outtro cheers mate 😊
Nice tutorial! Very accurate I'd say....Rare on youtube
You are a artist! Thank you for these wonderful videos. You've really helped me get along with my my playing. Is there any chance you could cover the "The Goodbye Look" in the future?
Unbelievable post. Thanks so much. Wish I'd found this earlier !!! :-)
Dude, your videos are incredible. Your sound and tone are spot on. You've helped me so much. Thinking of doing a Night by Night vid? that song slaps!
Good idea!
Superb! But dudes strings made me think there was a hair on my screen 😆
That solo was smooth, great work as always!
Impressive, young Jedi. How'd you know this was next on my list ? Thanks again for doing these.
hey man, love your work. Please do "Don't Take Me Alive." Also, curious what your setup is?
Outstanding lesson here! Tell me, would you not use the C7#9 Chord just before the first Verse?
Cool
THIS GUY REAL G O O D ! ! !
Woww
I have to learn. All of this. Minus the first solo. By tomorrow 1:30pm. It is currently 11pm. I need to go to sleep so so that I can wake up at 7am, and I won't be able to practise until 1:30pm, or past 1:30pm either as that's when I'm performing it. Oh god help me.
If I practice this for the rest of my days I’m not sure I’ll ever master that Bb 9/13
'Dr Wu' and 'Bad Sneakers' please????
Nice work. Any pedals?
2:19, 2:37, 2:45, 2:49
nice. but are you playing the 4th on your G6 Chord? Or are you really just doing a barre mute on the A string with the index?
👍👍👍😎
1:43
1:17 what is this chord? The chord chart says 5fr but you move up to the 7fr
You can do 'Home at Last'?!
This is such a great format but a lot of the chords are wrong, unfortunately
Like just cuz you dig the charlimaine cat
Clean af cover, but between the untrimmed strings and that mark on the wall over his right shoulder that looks like an eyelash on my screen this is video is the most stressful I've seen all week
Hell yeah man, I loved your Any Major dude tutorial, you give us what we need without showboating or interpretation I love ot you're my go to guy for Dan tunes.
Cut your excess strings!!!!! Why would you leave them hanging like that? It looks like shit!!!
I’ll practice for the rest of the year to master this song.
Time well spent imo..
And a few more years to gig it😅

the tab of the two last chords at 0:40 should be up two frets, you played it right tho
Great vid as always. Two chords are mislabeled. When he sings "you were a champion in their eyes". the last 2 chords are labelled in A on the 5th fret, but you're playing them in B on the 7th fret. Couldn't figure out why my chords didn't sound right. Thanks.
Hey Bruce, thanks you are right ofcourse. While they are still a A9sus and a Asus(add9), they are played on the 7th fret. I knew i was gonna make some minor mistakes with all those chords and tabs. Thank you for letting me know.
@@jonathaneli9901 I appreciate all the time it must take you to do the chord charts. I'm still trying to get those 2 chords to sound right. I'm sure it's user error :-) Do you work out all the chord changes yourself or do you have another source? I've learned several Dan songs from your vids. They've been very helpful and much appreciated. Thanks
@@brooos After the F I'm hearing a C(add11) XX355x (you can fake it with a C) followed by a G XX543X and a G6 0X543X & G C G F. It's the harmonic tone of bass playing the E that makes this change sound trickier than it is. At least that's what I hear :)
@@brooos Hey Bruce, I basically watch every video on youtube about those songs (tutorials and live concerts) + some tab websites and take every bit that seems to be right and fix it together.
just went looking for a comment before i posted similar concern
