Nice video, Jake! Good camera angles and lighting. You explained everything perfectly so that anyone could understand how to complete this operation. Hopefully, I'll be able to get through my brake job as seamlessly as you did!
Almost all brake rotors come with either an oil or varnish coating from the factory to keep them from rusting. Use brake cleaner to clean and a clean rag to wipe down. Then wash em with soap and water then rinse. It removes the residual metal from milling etc.
Many thanks from the USA :D I'll have more confidence in changing out my brakes because of your video.
Is the back brakes on toyota Corolla 2003 drums
Ok guys, I've finally had time to create a Facebook page to keep you guys posted on everything that's happening, if you'd like to follow it go to facebook.com/jakebillingonyoutube/ and hit that like button! The more the merrier!
Nice one. I've been looking for a HD vid on this. Thanks a lot!
Very nice Sir. I have to do this to my daughter's 2003 Toyota Corolla today. Love your video Sir. Nicely explained and very well done. Thank you very very much.
Thanks for the demo. Very straight forward and very informative!!
Love the clip---concise instruction & saves at least a $couple hundred. Novice DIY's shd use a torque wrench on serious bolts. So charitable to help the public by posting this!!
Most videos I watched were Amrican and Canadian accent. It's nice to listen British accent. Very good video.
Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to do this.
Thank you very much for show me how to do it. It is a great video!!
I liked the video. Good quality Im going to do mine soon. I would definatly clean rotors before finishing though
Great vid, very helpful. Thanks!
As soon as I saw that you didn't degrease the disc I wanted to write a comment about it and then I saw that many people did that before me. This is good, it means that people know what they're doing. Thank you for making this video! It's helpful. I didn't know Corolla has only one piston caliper tho! Civic from 10 years earlier has two piston caliper. Why? To keep the cost down? Any advantages, disadvantages?
Cool. Now I understand and going to attempt swapping the brakes on my 2004 diesel corolla. May I add that there are different types on brakes on the various models of corollas. I know the 2002 to 2005 2.0 diesels have Lucas systems which have the bigger 278mm discs all round whereas the t sports have the smaller discs on the rest. Something about the extra weight of the diesel. Anyway. Thanks for the video. Makes it look simple.
This video is mostly well-recorded and is a good overview, but it contains various of mistakes that disqualify it from being used by total beginners. Here are some of the ones I noticed:
*Mistake 1:* didn't use a jack and jack stands to raise the car (that spare tire scissor jack is NOT safe for this).
*Mistake 2:* didn't use brake cleaner on the new rotors to remove the packaging oils.
*Mistake 3:* didn't lubricate the pad-caliper contact points.
*Mistake 4:* wasted time & effort manually compressing the piston with improper tools. Should have used a C-clamp or a brake piston compression tool.
*Mistake 5:* didn't use a torque wrench.
So if you're a total beginner to rotor and pad changes, go watch another video, memorize it, then come back to this one to refresh your memory.
What should one lubricate with on the pad-caliper points?
Legend. Thanks for the vid
Hi Jake, just watched this, because I'm doing my front pads in a couple of days. Do I not need the copper grease on the back of the pads against the piston ? Thanks for the vid....j
Hi Jake, video was really helpful!
Did my rears a year or so ago with no problems.
Did my front disks and pads today, one side was fine and the other was a nightmare. On the caliper bracket where the caliper bolts go, there are two rubber bushes. One of them pushes in and the other is solid preventing me from putting the caliper back on. Any advice?
Thanks for the video. How long the disks and pads lasted? Looking for replacement at the moment, not sure about Apec brand.
Thanks from across the pond
Nice video, i would only have put some synthetic caliper grease around some areas where the pads and disk are in contact with but other than that very nice video.
Just had service rear pads and discs need changing plus back box snapped off is the rear discs n pads the same procedure ? And thanks for video gave me confidence to DIY save rip off garage bills:)
Don't forget to check your break fluid after you pump the breaks. You may have to add fluid, and be sure to test the breaks at a slow speed before hitting the Hwy.
I got same model same colour, but not sure what litre is yours mine is 1.4vvti T sprit in greay with 76k miles, just bought it. Will be doing my rear brakes and disks
this was a really helpful vid for a beginner like me! :) thank you
Thanks Jake
Thank you Brother...
Thank you for saving me lot of euros👍
Thaks a lot Jake. You must take a short way: people would know replacing brake pads and rotors, tires must be off
hi sorry for being picky but i didn't see you wash the oil from the brand new disks before fitting them but apart for that job well done.
Good video but here's a tip: you can use a pry bar through the window (rectangle hole on the caliper) to pry the piston back in ! Much easier this way !
Even easier is to use a "C" clamp, along with the small scrap of wood, or one of the old pads.
Good one

Can you do another video where we can see your woolen sweater / jumper
Beautiful British weather by the looks
God Blimey Guvner
Love from Australia
And some grease on the slider pins.
Surprised you didn't advocate cleaning the the rake calliper & bracket with brake cleaner given it's 90k miles or tightening to the specified torques, including the wheel nuts (e.g. 103Nm). Apart from that a decent 'how to' ;)
12MM & 17MM. MY MISTAKE
the back pads is also the same routine?
You might have an issue with the brake cable when changing pads. If your car has drums, that's a different procedure. There are plenty of other videos to show how to do that.
mine is discs front and back (e12 2.0 cc 116 hp 5door)
...wipe down the brake disk with brake cleaner or paint thinner before replacing the caliper. They all come slightly greased to prevent corrosion... . ;-)
Nice tip putting the tyre under the jacked up car, I will remember that.
I'm going to start with my own Toyota RunX, if i do a good enough job then I'm open for business
You haven't service guidpins calipers
a very windy day!
Don't forget to press on the brake pedal before you start the car to get the piston into place
How much is this job
NOT A BAD VIDEO THOUGH I NOTICED YOU DIDN'T SHOW BEFORE YOU INSTALLED THE NEW PADS THAT YOU DIDN'T APPLY ANY LUBE ON THE PADS OR THE REST SLIDES WHERE PADS REST ON, ALSO THE LONG BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CALIPER ASSEMBLY TOGETHER NO LUBE WAS APPLIED.
Turn your fucking capslock off.
Mistake one, was not cleaning the disc before putting it on, New discs come with a film of preservative and MUST be cleaned off! Then you omitted copperslip to the back of the pads to avoid squeaks.
Hi Mr. Bridle, you forgot that Jake is a Brit! We did not do that in Great Briton and the British Colony.
cary
This shit burns off once they get hot he's on his driveway give him a break
Mistake one was not putting a jackstand underneath the damn thing. Mistake two was using fuxken prybars to compress the cylinder instead of a C clamp or god forbid a brake compress kit (DASBET 22pcs Heavy Duty Disc Brake Caliper Tool Set and Wind Back Kit for Brake Pad www.amazon.ca/dp/B075XK5477/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Ug-TBbFC416HA)
No lube no degreasing of new disc rotors seems big mustakes but as a lady working on a car with your jacket I cant not tolerate that 😅😬
grate thnx
Thanks for the positive feedback
Been working on cars for 40 years ,never trust a scissor jack best invest in a cheep trolly jack best money you can spend if your going to work on cars
This is a Mickey mouse operation as we would call it. DO NOT WORK ON A CAR SUPPORTED ONLY BY A JACK. Make sure there is a jack stand. Dont use pry bars to push the cylinder back. Some vehicles require the cylinder to be rotated while being pushed. Absolutely clean your rotors with brake cleaner before going out.
Needs must sometimes. He put the wheel under and he's not under the car either. We don't all have jack stands unfortunately
Mate, you really need to use a brake cleaner/solvent to remove the corrosion preventative coating which usually is cosmoline. Not removing the protective coating can cause the friction material of the brake pads to glaze thereby reducing the brakes ability to stop the car quickly enough to keep you safe. Cosmoline is one of the oldest rust inhibitors. It is a greasy, waxy substance that was used extensively to preserve post war military equipment, and is still used to prevent automotive disc brake rotors from rusting. - good video otherwise cheers
Stopped the video when I saw you didn’t clean the new discs with brake cleaner. They come with anti corrosion oil on them. Please do not show people how to work on their cars if you are unsure of what you are doing yourself. It can be dangerous.
that's an american thing. Over in England they don't come with that coating (where he's from)
Bonnet? The English have funny word choices. At least it was a blue bonnet. Or was it Mazola? At least he knows how to edit unlike most UA-camrs.
There is also the boot and cubby hole.
This is not Corolla, it is a Toyota Yaris !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You idiot 😂
