As an ex bus driver, I always said to my kids say thank you to the driver, you might be the only passenger that does, even now as I am retired I always thank the driver and wish him a good shift, it costs nothing to be polite!!!

People in general should say please and thank you a lot more than they do. Not just to bus drivers, but retail staff and in all sorts of situations. It’s just basic good manners.

I am a retired bus driver with 47 years service and I think you get what you give. I always greeted my passengers with a smile and a good morning/night and most reciprocated. I would tell new drivers that if everyone said thank you then you know you have given them a smooth ride and if they all ignore you then maybe you need to re-evaluate your driving practices and attitude.

Saw the title and paused after three seconds in. For me - yes. I shout thanks from the middle doors or at least put my hand up to acknowledge. There’s some parts of London where this is a thing, I’ve seen it a lot on the Romford local routes : )
Edit: Smooth ride? I’d be more chuffed with a roller coaster ride 😈, but these days with ISA, Green Road, loads of 20 zones it doesn’t happen as much as it used to

With no hesitation Absolutely . I always do. I hello when I get on a bus and thank you driver when I get off and sometimes it starts a chain reaction , as you mention one can say thank you then othes follow . The best thing is when going down the road , look at a passing bus and get a wave from a driver

I always do, especially if like yourself you help me onto the bus or say get the ramp out. As in London the ramps are automatic, often make sure that I go past the front doors to especially say thanks.

I always say thanks or give a little thumbs up when I get off the bus, it's just a way of giving appreciation to the driver for getting me to where I want to go. Especially of course to you good people at Catford who help us with looking after RT1702 (the oldest bus in the garage) and give her safe anchorage when we're not around.
See you soon on the 47 or 75, cheers for all you do.

When it’s a fast driver I always say thank you, I like to travel around London by buses and do videos, if I come across a quick driver, they always get my thanks, but if they are dead slow and take the piss then they just get a bad look when I get off 😂

When I used to live in London I was always brought up to say please and thank you to the driver when paying for a ticket (this was 1999 you still could pay cash) couldn't do the same getting off as you left through the middle doors. Now I live on the south coast and I still say please and thank you when buying a ticket but also when I leave the bus they get a thank you as you've only got the one set of doors at the front down here :)

I think once I got on a bus and I wasn't sure if the driver was waiting for me or just waiting to even out the service, so I didn't say thanks because I didn't want the driver to wonder what for, if he was just waiting to even out the service. Also I usually don't try to talk to the drivers because it seems like they can't hear me through the door anyway. Especially if I'm getting off the bus I feel like there's no way they'd hear me. Btw I love your attitude and how chill you are about it. You're absolutely right that people might have various reasons for not saying thanks, and many of them are probably good reasons and they are thankful

The thing is we are just used to saying Thank you to the driver that's our British way of doing things. What I have realised is that some bus drivers don't respond when a passenger says Thank you, and in London because the buses have 3 exit doors so not all passengers can Thank the driver, but it’s good to Thank the bus driver for the safe journey

I was always brought with the saying 'good manners cost nothing'. That's very true saying. I used to travel on buses through out the country but I always said Thank you. Including in London and I do on/off the bus. In London I know you can hear me from the middle doors. Its a sign of gratidude and general decency. My partner works in retail and does get frustrated that certain customers don't thank her for the customer service given. I taje on board your comments and thoughts though but we should all say Thank you.

Having been on the buses myself (as a conductor), I always say good morning to the driver when I get on. I tap my concessionary card on the machine, and thank the driver even though the ticket is automatically issued. I also thank the driver when I get off- courtesy costs nothing, and usually what you give, you get in return. One thing that really annoys me is if somebody wants to get off and the driver goes past the stop, having not heard the bell, and the passenger stands behind the cab and says nothing, goes several stops more until somebody flags the bus down and then moan at the driver who has been paying attention to the road as he should. What's wrong with a polite "Excuse me , I did ring the bell..."?

I have noticed a big difference growing up in East London. People are so busy getting to where they need to be as quick as possible. Saying thank you is the last thing on there mind. Now I live the lake district. Its more laid back, people talk to each other. Very few ppl do not say thanks to the driver.

Its different where I am outside London, the drivers generally look at you and often say good morning etc. I think it makes a difference also , when they are single door, as many people thank the driver. Often in London, the drivers do not even acknowledge you, even when you thank them when tapping the ticket machine.

Common practice here in Kent, where I live. Everyone normally says a routine "thank you" to the driver when they get off the bus, no matter where they're headed for. The X3 which runs from Canterbury to Maidstone via Bysing Wood, Ospringe, Faversham and Sittingbourne, is one route I use frequently, bit of a long trek but the countryside views are great, even if it takes about 90 minutes between the two. This doesn't normally happen in London, but then again, that's London.....................

  • @kristinajendesen7111

Oh another thing. I will always let a bus through a gap or out from a bus stop if indicating, they generally thank you with a wave or a flash of the hazards. It is annoying when they don't acknowledge you when you've let them through a gap though so any current drivers reading be sure to give some sign.
Taxi drivers though, they can go and get stuffed, so ignorant. They use to be alright in London, I don't know what they're like now?

  • @vincishguy
    @vincishguy 7 місяців тому +1

In my opinion, when you have good manners, you automatically say thank you when someone goes the extra mile for you ie Wait for someone who is running for your bus or someone who holds the door open for you when going into a shop etc
I was raised with manners, so I say thank you to people as standard.
Generally, people who don't say thank you, that's just how they are. They haven't got basic manners or they think they are above you.

I like to thank the driver and say hello as I board. If I felt like the manner of driving was questionable I don't usually bother. One such case was today when the driver went straight through two red lights. Was not at all happy about the risk he took. Other then that I will always thank the driver. Have a tradition to give the drivers on my regular routes a gift card for xmas.

I usually thank the driver, but not if he/she constantly brakes too severely, or does not pull up at the bus stop correctly, I.e. just past the flag, or not close enough to the kerb for such as an elderly person to alight or board. I find in my area that most drivers have good skills, one such is to wait for any older passenger to be seated before moving off, but in London I have noticed that rarely does any of the above happen.

Drove buses for 10 years on the south coast 99% of passengers are so appreciatave and say thank you. However spent the final 7 months driving out of West Ham and 99% of people was disgusting to the drivers. So many people just head butting or hitting the screen shouting fuck your oyster card or some other needless commen . Saying thank you to the driver is largely divided by regional behaviour differences and a massive lack of respect for bus drivers in London. You all do a great job and deserve more than a thank you

It's just how they were raised, the Windrush generation for example are lovely, they were raised to be polite. My parents raised me the same way. Canadians are invariably polite but many Americans, not all, can be very ignorant towards waiters and other service staff.
I had a conductor when I was at Westbourne Park in the 80s and occasionally drove the modern buses on the №18s through Kilburn and Harlesden to Sudbury. I used to say 'good morning' and some people looked surprised, I don't think they expected a happy driver.
Later on the trains it was very rare for passengers to thank you as they walked past the cab. It used to be more common though for the old steam engine drivers to be thanked.
Talking about being pro-active, I used to have this theory that if you smiled at 20 people and 2 of those people passed that smile on to other people that was a good return.
I tried to be smart. There was a mirror at the sadly long gone Chiswick Training Centre that had wording at different levels on the mirror e.g.: 'Are your shoes clean?', Are your trousers/skirt pressed?', 'Is your tie done up?' Etc.
We had some really scruffy crews though in the 80s, Ricky for example would be wearing the summer weight light grey jacket, sleeves rolled up, QPR T-Shirt, jeans and white trainers 😮 How he got away with it I don't know.
I think it's a pity that so many drivers wear a HV vest or jacket in the cab these days.
Edit: Some of the newer bus drivers down here in Bournemouth can be or seem grumpy. I've had Polish drivers that don't even acknowledge you or say thank you when you have bought a ticket. That may be how they do things there though I don't know. I still say thank you and when I get off.

❤ 😊 nice video my friend. Its important to show that you appreciate the bus driver and their hard work. I will defo comment on this video this weekend my friend.
I started the walworth bus depot last week Monday 8th. All drivers at walworth depot were welcoming and very nice and pleasant. I've been on soo many buses lately today me and my brother went on both 133 and 333 today and some days during this week because it was their last day in arriva today because 333 will return to go ahead london in stockwell after 7 years and 133/N133 will go to Abellio tomorrow and managed to say good luck to those arriva drivers they were very nice x 😊 appreciate my feedback.
Sometimes drivers are tired x stressed due to them being overworked/long hours and longer shifts/certain routes and their pay as well that's why sometimes they can't all be good but other days they turn out to be nice and are 😊. But sometimes driving is hard and working conditions can impact drivers these days. But always appreciate all drivers for their hard work I am super pleased to be in a bus company setting 😀 and all drivers like me 👍. I will defo comment about my experience and my appreciation to drivers this weekend. Not to worry about uniform you always look good some drivers don't wear uniform they were what they like but mainly some companies would require drivers to wear uniform. Also liked your previous video on you mentoring that new man who now drives 136. I actually have witnessed seeing that man you mentored driving the 136 around in elephant last week or nearly weeks ago? Also it is true that the TL depot has another new member driver who used to be at Abellio at QB Battersea I actually known him since being at battersea last year. I actually went on his bus yesterday morning he was driving 136 he remembers me and I remember him to. Well it's going to be a competition this year of these bus companies some drivers are moving companies due to working conditions long hours and their pay rate not being enough. I always appreciate your hard work driving these buses always it isn't always easy. When I was in Brixton I actually witnessed seeing the reception lady from your depot who was at the time driving the P4. ❤ your videos and your work it shows that you r able to deliver 🚌 . Have a good weekend , even if u have to work on weekends have a safe journey on the roads or at least get some relax x some days off sometimes 👍 u work 2 hard x

@thatbusdriverguy this is a nationwide thing, as a bus driver of 5 years I’ve always wondered this, it doesn’t bother me as much but I always try and make their experience on my bus as enjoyable as possible as it makes my job easier and it makes my day because I know I’ve done my job, I had a situation myself when I used to work for Stagecoach in Manchester I asked a passenger why they didn’t speak to me in my early days as a driver and it just brought me tea and biscuits in the managers office and I got sent on a CPC course on mental health (which is a new course now within your CPC) and learning how passengers act and why and understanding that it made learn that not everyone will see you in the same way you see them, just understand and work around that and just take it with a pinch of salt, as long as you drive safe and you provide good customer service that’s all that matters, your a decent driver keep your chin up and keep doing what your doing 👍

I suppose for us older ones, we were used to interacting with the conductor, and the the driver on the OMO buses. Nowadays it's just a matter of touching the pad and no conversation is necessary. That said, I always say thank you to the driver, sometimes ignored but still say it. And when passing the driver on the way out too. We are on a 'hail and ride' route so the drivers know where we like to get on and off. I brought my kids up to say thank you to the drivers too. If we expect good customer service, in any part of life, we should be polite customers too.

Some drivers that i have known for a long time if i seen them during summer time i would buy them a cold drink or ice cream if they had to stop and wait if slightly ahead of time.

There are many cultures around the World who have now settled in Britain. As anyone who has travelled will tell you that the concept of please and thankyou is largely a Western/ Europen concept. In some Arabic Countries it is seen as a social failure to say please/ thankyou ("Only a stranger needs to say that") and if you have conducted any form of business transaction then you are no longer a stranger. People often mistake this for rudeness, but then they also think Arabs who belch after eating are being rude when they are not- to fail to do so IS rude under their culture.
Now that Britain is home to just above every culture under the sun (including a few indigenous Britons if you know where to look for us) people should really be more aware of this. Is there an argument to say "When in Rome..."? Yes, I think so but then I am in a minority group.
