「Boku no Sensou」or 「My war」 is probably the most crazy opening song I have heard in a while and all I could think of was “Anime OP, but presented as a death march”. Because we are now entering the endgame of the epic story of Attack on Titan and it has one prevailing topic: War.
Although the arrangement doesn’t sound that complicated, it is actually one of my most difficult pieces I have uploaded for a long time. The constant polyphony in many parts of this arrangement is probably the main reason why it is so technically challenging to play, because you have to balance the voices well and emphasize certain melodies if it’s needed.
I also started to utilize the “four hand” technique: Basically, each hand is playing two layers of melody at the same time. For example, the intro part in 00:08 has actually 4 instrumental layers: the right hand is playing the C#-C-C#-G# “Bell” sound and the higher “Choir” voice while the left hand is playing the bassline and a fast, rhythmic pattern, imitating the “drums”.
I could hear at least 6 different musical layers in the chorus part in 01:14 and it was hard for me to decide, which melody I should prioritize and which one I can omit. I tried to combine as many layers as possible with my 2 hands (I really, really wish I have 3 hands) to imitate the overwhelming atmosphere of the original song.
Btw, the “bell” ostinato C#-C-C#-G# motif in 00:01 reminds me of “Dies Irae” (Day of Wrath), an ancient hymn usually sung as a part of a Requiem, aka a Mass for the Dead. Which fits in pretty nicely for Attack on Titan, since the Opening animation is displaying nothing but War, destruction and regeneration. (笑)
Speaking of the Opening Animation, I also tried to imitate the Art style by filming this video in monochrome only, except the lighting in the background, which remains colorful. I hope you enjoy those kinds of special video edit every once in a while!
Last but not least: This arrangement also serves as my personal piano etude, because it features many piano techniques which I am actually bad at. For example, the fourth runs in 02:45, the double hand jumps in 01:30, the very uncomfortable left hand pattern in 00:07 and the polyphonic rhythms in 01:37. I was really challenging all my “weak points” this time, because the only way I can improve my piano technique is to leave my comfort zone. I guess I will never learn enough as an pianist.

I have been asked many times why I am not recording on my Steinway Grand Piano anymore. To put it simple, due to various circumstances it has become inaccessible now. I posted about my situation in my UA-cam community page in January this year, please read it if you want to understand my situation!
But I will continue arranging new anime pieces on my new Stage Piano in the meanwhile and hope you still like it! The piano might have changed, but my playing ability has stayed the same and my motivation to create an “Anime Piano library” on UA-cam has never been higher!

Although many people love the beautiful sound of Steinway Grand Piano, it is not the hammer and keyboard that really touches our hearts, but the emotion and love of anime that Animenz wants to convey to everyone every time in the music!

Kuusou Mesorogiwi is probably my most "classical music" - style arrangements I have ever done, good choice! Boku no Sensou is also heavily influenced by classical music polyphony.

I find quite a lot of elements from your "old school" arrangements here: a lot of references or techniques from the classical repertoire, busy hands, dialogues between lower and higher sections of the keyboard, and crazy difficulty! Even though I love your newer stuff and find the evolution of your arrangements interesting, I hope you'll occasionaly do some arrangements like this one!
Prior to arranging this, I was practicing many classical pieces in the C# minor key like Beethovens moonlight sonata mov 3 or Chopin etude op.10 No.4. It helped me a lot to “get a feeling” of classical music back

As impressive as the performance is, I'm more amazed by how well those are arranged. I played several Animenz songs, being hard is one part, but they seems to be infinitely more sophisticated than arrangements of the same songs from other musicians on UA-cam.

Technically, it doesn't make much sense cuz. In the case of eren, racism is something undesirable, so saying that racism will be removed when there's no race to be racist about to begin with is an irony and quite the funny joke.
However, being a pianist is much desirable, so it doesn't really fit in the context, although I do understand the direction you're going into XD

The left hand pattern in 0:08 is actually frustratingly difficult, try it for yourself on the piano!
Because usually, these kind of fast patterns have the bass note on the first beat [C#-E-D#-E] [C#-E-D#-E] but I reversed that order to create [E-C#-D#-C#] E-C#-D#-C#]
I was surprised how long it took for me to play this unusual pattern in fast speed without losing focus. Should have practiced more Czerny Etudes...

I love the color palette selection and clean editing to contrast the eerie monochrome piano and hands with the vibrant bold globe and background lighting. The bold red background really complements the parts in the piece with the highest tension, further intensifying that mood.
Even though at face value the LH patterns feel simpler and perhaps just a tad repetitive (not to take away from the arrangement, just personal stylistic preference), I really liked the attention to detail on the polyphonic sections and how each individual voice stood out cleanly and clearly. The pattern at 2:19 is my favorite out of this arrangement.

There were many alternative left hand patterns for the chorus actually in my earlier arrangement drafts, but I think "Boku no Sensou" was deliberately composed in a way to sound monotone - like a death march. So I kept the "Bumm-tss Bumm-tss" - pulse in the left hand consistently.

The most glissando before was "Don't say lazy" (K-on Ending) which has 8 times of glissando.
This piece has 11 times of glissando (hopefully I count it right). OMG!

The wait is worth it. I always skip anime OP until I listen to a piano cover. This way I can focus on the piece without "hearing lyrics" as it sometimes hinder my judgement of how beautiful a song on it's piano version.

I´m listening to this thinking man Animenz really went out on this again. Then I´m reading the description saying those are you targeted your WEAKPOINTS. Hats off. Cause I sure as hell didn´t notice. I am not really someone who ever got really good at playing piano, but not bad enough to have no clue of whats going on. Absolute legend. I probably listened to single Animenz covers for quite literally days. And right now I´m thinking about going on a everlasting GC loop again :)
