@@tommaxwell4470 Most of the Percussion/Drum music I've seen for this show just gives a basic idea of the pattern/genre and they have to improvise the rest
Never knew how much a theater show percussionist has to actually do during a show. So many groups of instruments to be in charge of as well as play at the right moment. Are you in the pit along with the conductor or do you have monitors ? I play drums and percussion as well. Thank you for sharing what you do, I've always been curious about this as a job. Do you work in New York City ?

We're doing Crazy For You.
Damn, bro. We were gonna do Into the Woods at my school, and I was gonna do percussion. Then they decided that Into the Woods was too cool for us, so we switched to Xanadu, and cut the pit down to four people. I play kit, too, so I was like... "Can I play pit?" They told me no, that they needed someone experienced (I've been playing for years) and that they were just gonna hire pros. More than half the cast has dropped out. It's gonna be a real shitty musical, but their pit is gonna sound great. I wish them luck.
please tell me they provide the big instruments (bongos, congas, vibes, timpani, etc) because those gigs better pay WELL if they expect a percussionist to already own all that...is it BYOI? (Bring Your Own Instruments)
I'm sweating here at the beginning when it's basically only Usnavi and the percussion. MUST NOT MESS UP! MUST NOT MESS UP! Good on you for being a pro! Amazing to see/hear how integral the conga is to most of the songs -- they wouldn't be the same without it.
i was the flute player for my school's production of hairspray, and since i rarely played i helped my friend with the percussion... it was so much fun, even though there were times both of us still ended up playing multiple instruments at the same time. you're amazing!!
emi mizuki yeah i did the drum set part in pit in hairspray it was a lot i was helping out with the aux stuff while playing set which was a process lmao
questions: 1) When a new percussionist comes in, are they locked into the same setup as the predecessor? What if they move differently from instrument to instrument? 2) Are the instruments purchased for the show, or do they belong to the players?
Wow. I’m really not sure if you are a Latin percussionist by trade or if this was a rare thing for you, but your mastery of some of the fundamentals is so incredible. The way you took the 3/2 son clave groove from the claves to the congas was flawless. Your timbale technique is great, too. I grew up listening to my Papi play, and he spent many years playing with Señor Puente. Watching this video brought back many fond memories. Bravo, sir.
wooowww this is so cool! i feel like i'll be like a kid in a candy store! idk why i never really paid attention to this. it basically didn't exist in my world! im gonna look it up! looks so coool!!
I love watching these videos! I’ve played in the pit for our high school’s production of The Addams Family, and I was the drummer as well as the aux. Super frustrating looking between two, no, three books! I am amazed that there are two drummers in the pit, my father(who played as a pit musician in NYC) just told me stories of one drummer, himself. Keep it up!
Ok so ... Explain why this was never on my UA-cam recommend as soon this is out ??? ***FREAKING LOVE UR WORKS!!! First vid i watch from your channel and i always love / enjoy listen different parts of music in musicals!!keep it uppp
If you listen to both shows soundtracks it's easy to tell that the same two people wrote and orchestrated the music. Rhythmic and Harmonic similarities are everywhere.
In the music, is it notated specifically when to play marcha or mambo for example, or are the actual figures written out? And how much variation are you able to include?
Sebastian Hochman the music basically says “martillo 3-2” or “salsa” or any kind of style it wants you to play. then it says “simile” with a bunch of repeated measures
i used to be a percussionist in the school band for a long time, and i'm also in theatre and was recently in the ensemble of a production of in the heights last year, where i spent a lot of time just listening to the instrumentals and tracks, studying them just for fun. long story short? this video = awesome.
I’m just binging your channel right now. I am a percussionist in high school. Will be attending umkc for music education after I graduate. Videos like this really are gonna make me regret not pursuing mainly performance.
There were a few notes that were so high that the trumpets didn't even try to go for them. One that stood out to me was at the end of the "You must take the A train" segment. They played an F, the actual note is Ab. I could be wrong though, I play flute, not trumpet, but I have a close friend who's playing trumpet in our ITH Pit Orchestra. I honestly hear how these trumpets did on the first note of The Club. That note's nearly impossible.
Fantastic video! Love the percussion in this show when I first saw it in London! I have question if you don't me asking. How are these setups usually mic'd up? for example using the shakers, I don't visibly see a microphone nearby
London Lad thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As for the mics, it really depends on how the theater wants to do it. It's hard to see them because of the angle of the camera, but there's a mic over the bongos and another by the trap table. Basically one over every area of the set up, so when you see me play I'm playing towards a mic. I hope that answers your question.
The view from a Trumpets view would probably be pretty dulll in comparison. You either have half the view covered by an instrument and the rest of the time reading the sheet counting measures and breaks. ( Just one of the many instruments I picked it randomly Trumpet players are awesome too.)
