Michael, either way i'm not very interested in this John Lennon solo demo. It's just for curiosity IMO. However, if they were to work on a REAL Beatles recording - such as the George Harrison 1964 recording "You Know What To Do" - then i would be interested!! This song already has George, John & Paul on it. Add some drums by Ringo & some additional instrumentation from Paul. You've then got something more authentic. Plus the original demo is a much higher quality recording than "Now Or Then".

Olivia Harrison recently said: “Back in 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard. If he were here today, [son] Dhani and I know he would have wholeheartedly joined Paul and Ringo in completing the recording of Now and Then.”

I think most of us have heard the song enough times through fan mixes, as well as the original demo to know if they have tinkered with the vocals beyond track separation, eq and general restoration. One thing I am curious to hear is how the new technology will work as far as making John’s vocal sound more like it was recorded with a proper mic. I know ai can work miracles with frequency restoration, and there is definitely an inherent issue with missing frequencies on a vocal recorded with a 1970s cassette recorder’s condenser microphone. I’m genuinely curious from a technical standpoint about this… and I was really looking forward to hearing remixes of “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love” for this reason. I’m really disappointed that they didn’t do this.

    • @MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine

Yeah and even though John’s cassette recorder was one of the very best available at the time, he didn’t plug in a mic, but rather used the built in condenser mic he had on the machine!

Sean Lennon, Paul and Ringo have ALL said Machine Assisted Learning software was only used to isolate john's voice from his cassette demo, so the song could be mixed without the background noise and without his piano which wanders all over the place while he sings. This is exactly how MAL was used to remix revolver. MAL doesn't generate sound, it just isolates individual sounds from a 1-track recording. There's no generative AI used on this track! People need to know. Sidenote: None of John's demo piano is on the finished song. Paul learned John's parts and played studio piano on the track (Just like they would have done in the 60s when Paul played 90% of the piano parts on Beatles songs, and John only played a few).

Ringo always confused remaster for remix, don't take his word for anything technical, and Sean Lennon ever wavered and was always clear in his descriptions. Penn? So old Paul + digitally rescued John is good, but digitally rescued Paul & John is not? Michael, I love ya man, but you're wrong on the de-aging. I'll tell you why:
    1) The Beatles (especially John) would do anything to make their voices sound good. They were ALWAYS toying with the sound of their voice.
    2) The process of de-aging isn't as artificial as you might think. Paul is singing the song and the frequencies missing from his sound are replaced with his pre-injury voice. It's not a simulation, as much as it's literally his tone from him. It's essentially a "Paul effect", no different than John or Paul putting his voice through an amp to make a new tone. Lady Madonna isn't Paul's natural voice either. John's voice isn't "pure" on "Tomorrow Never Knows" and thank God for that
    3) The Beatles had no rules in the studio, outside of "It has to sound good". Paul is a legend in 2023 and his mind is still sharp, but his voice is damaged. Why does he have to leave it that way on a record if he doesn't want to? We both know John would absolutely be all over AI making his own voice younger. Paul is probably depressed about his voice and doesn't enjoy hearing it, so why are we forcing him to leave it as it is? It's not just his age, he sounds like he's damaged them.
The problem I have with the song is "Eleanor Rigby" and "Here there & Everywhere" being recycled. Mainly because I've heard them before and I want to hear new stuff made just for this song.

I agree with you regarding The Beatles and especially John would mess around with their voices and other aspect as well MrKeychange!
But John and George are not here to make those decisions.

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine As far as it making more sense, your point is totally valid. I think a lot of us (me included) want Paul to be Johnny Cash, but given his collaboration choices and use of de-aging, he's obviously not seeing himself that way. I get it. I'll probably fight my age to the last breath too
I figure if we'll all enjoy it more and he personally prefers it, there's no harm.

    • @MrKeychange
      @MrKeychange Рік тому

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Regarding, John and George not being here, that's also a valid point. With that in mind, George said in an interview that he'd hope one day when he's gone "someone will turn his shitty demos into hit songs." haha He was joking, but also not. He had no problem doing it without John
John hand picked Paul as his partner and nobody knew him better musically. What I consider is how John died and the fact that perhaps Paul almost has a duty to finish John's last songs. In the 60s, John would always lend snippets to Paul's music and when he died, all these ideas were destined to die with him. Those demos and the hours of material Jack Douglas has are ideas John wanted people to hear. I think Paul and Yoko should do whatever they can find. Not as the Beatles, but as John & Paul.

George recorded a harmony vocal in '95, and tracked acoustic and electric guitar parts. Giles also said that Paul insisted the strings they recorded for Now and Then responded to and took into account how George was playing rhythm guitar. So George's guitar influenced the strings! He'll be very big influence on the finished song, more of an influence than on several Beatles classics. Several Pepper and White Album songs where George didn't play anything or just played one guitar part.

So, youd rather have pauls current voice ruining the youthful sound that is the beatles, that id assume theyre going for? The voice gets old. No fault of paul, but he sounds like a shaky old womaan. Your saying you wknt have anything to do with it if paul sounds younger or...less gruff, more crystaline? Cmon now. In this clip, youve jumped to waaaay too manny conclusions.these guys have all the resource in the music world to make this sound good. As were also talking about the stuff from 93/94, that stuff can be brought out much better. And im.willing to be you cant hear pitch correction on somebody who can actually sing, autotune is more of the case where you can clearly hear it jumping, when somebody cant sing a note to save their life. I think your writing this off too soon, but your gunna be making mlney from videos when it comes out and you praise it to high heavens.

I totally agree with you. It seems like the arguments are arbitrary. Paul's voice is damaged (not just old) and I don't understand this need to force him to leave it that way on a Beatles record. Everyone seems fine with him using it on his own albums. He's super vain and it's probably making him nuts.
John hated his voice and would have been all over this tech if it existed. It's just an effect like any other, only it's innovative.

    Ringo's drums from another song
    George's slide from another song
John's Piano from the Demos w/
    Paul's piano from 1995.
A full orchestra performance scored by George Martin
New harmonies with John & Paul from the 80s backing the bridges.

hello michael,,thanks for your reply,as I said I have a new laptop, with a camera built in and I WOUld like to have a live chat session ,all night if nessacery,I am sure everyone has a few bones to pick, just to change the subject for a bit,the white album was a bit of a ripoff too,the binding was so thin, capital was always cheap with cardboard,it split right after I bought it,it was based on the original 2lp set,I still have mine,it was thick, even for a 2lp set,the 3cd set is too heavy for the binding,go figure that out,it should have been in a slipcase, which would cost nothing,,another flaw is the sgt pepper, when it came out in june 4 2017,and i listen to the bonus disc,,no extra tracks of,WITH A LITTLE HELP,JUST A BACKING TRACK,THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A REHERSAL TAke,and ANOTHER COMPLETE VERSION,WITH DIALOG AT THE START,AND MAYBE THE LP TAKE,WITH A CHAT INTRO AT THE START& END,THIS WOULD HAVE REALLY MADE THIS SET GREAT,EVEN THE EXPANDED BOX SET DID NOT INCLUDE THIS,THE ,1s remix was not right ,some were not really REMIXED,AND JUST MADE LOUDER,PENNEY LANE,BALLAD OF,FROM ME TO YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD A STEREO MIX,BY MOVEING THE VOCAL IN THE CENTER,AND THE HARMONICA TRACK PUT IN THE CENTER,SINCE ITS ON A SEPERATE TAPE, FOR THE ORIGINAL SESSION TAPE,THE NEW MIX OF PENNEY LANE WAS INCLUDED ON 1,s,,which was a error,it should have been the promo mix which was a different mix for the vocal& backing instrumental track than the 45 mix,,I WILL SAY MORE IN THE NEXT TEXT,DAN DIORIO,,

The original Sony Cassette Tape Deck. That Lennon used to record this last song on. Was a State of the Art recorder for it's Time! The condenser microphones were phenomenal! They would actually adjust to the volume of whatever was being recorded! My Band like most, was very loud. But the rehearsal Jams were never distorted! The recordings would come out Crystal clear! Playing the tapes back in the car sounded great! Amazing condenser microphone, Sony always the Best! I had that from 1977 until the mid 80's. Then It was stolen at a rehearsal studio! Or I would still have that Sony Cassette Tape Deck Today!

All true Kevin! But John refused to plug in a really good mic, just using the built in condensers on the machine! So sad! ❤❤❤

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLineI'm able to do the same sort of thing Peter Jackson did on John's demos and you'd be shocked how good the vocals sound when the instruments and tape noise are removed with new methods.
John sang these demos multiple times. The trick to elevating the sound to near-studio quality is isolating his vocals off multiple versions and comping/ double tracking them. Basically, do what John always did in the studio and they sound like they always did.
I can link you to a version of "Free As A Bird" I messed around with if you'd like to hear it for yourself. It's a version I did just for me because Jeff Lynne's fanboying all over the original has always irritated me. My version has only the Beatles on it, proper John & Paul harmonies etc.

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Thank's Mike, "Great Channel" Ya, like must of us he was lazy! He was inspired at the moment! He wasn't going to stop & look for cables & stands to hook up 🎤 He knew those condenser mics we're good enough for playback. He wasn't thinking about any future recording's.

I always thought it was blasphemous that the solo from Taxman was flown in to Tomorrow Never Knows. Keep the songs straight and don’t mix them together.

Why do all this speculation and commenting on things you don’t know? You haven’t heard it. None of us have. You’re making arguments for things you don’t even know to be 100% true. Just relax. Wait for a minute, LISTEN to the actual song when it comes out, instead of citing “reports” and then make your video.
Secondly, The Beatles have and will always be about pushing the envelope, pushing boundaries to the max, embracing technology. Do you like Strawberry Fields? There is so much vocal and editing trickery in just that one song and yet it’s universally adored as one of their best.
I guess my point it is, The Beatles are doing what they always have. And I’m willing to bet in the next year or two, countless major acts will follow there lead yet again.

I only commented on what was said by Paul Ringo, & Penn of Penn & Teller since he was privy to a personal advanced listening! And it was just a discussion in anticipation, that’s all cbee!
I have studied the Beatles as a musician and fan, and you are right they have always pushed the boundaries, but with John and George no longer to give a current say in matters, I think Paul % Ringo need to be careful with what they do with this single, that’s all!
But thanks for your comments! All well thought out, in antithesis of my points, and I love them!❤❤❤
Besides, talking about upcoming Beatle projects started when I was about 9 years old, so…😉

I've been a Beatles freak for most of my 61 years, but this song doesn't sound like a good one. I've heard Lennon demos (as a Beatle and solo artist) that started out crummy and turned into phenomenal songs. For example, "Real Love," which I LOVE, began as a completely different song. But it takes time. This sounds like a mediocre demo that Lennon never had the chance to really work on. I don't like it, and his voice doesn't sound good at all. I wish, instead, they'd put their AI efforts toward "Real Love" to clean THAT up, and "Free as a Bird," too. I don't care if they AI Paul's voice (although I agree with the "Now and Then" comment about using an older Paul and a younger John), because the song just isn't good, period. I think Harrison wasn't interested in this song because he didn't think it was good. But, as we all know, this has nothing to do with quality or history; it's all about money. It's always all about money.
