2021 Update: Backblaze added the 'Forever' version history so problem solved - I don't have to keep reconnecting multiple external HDs! :) Great video my dude!
it doesn't sound like this 'forever' option is a real solution tho this though? from what i understand, when you click forever you're being billed per gigabyte for their B2 service.
thanks for the warning about backblaze deleting files if you delete it locally or the need to continually keep plugin in the external drives to make the comparison
Thanks for the insight!! No one talks about this so this is good info to have prior to making a decision. You probably saved me hours or months of frustration.
i fail to see how backblaze is better, when you keep pointing out backblaze keeps on making it difficulty by removing stuff very easily, whereas with crashplan you have least worry that it will just remain available. even if CP is inferior in some areas to backblaze, i would want some certainty that whats on the cloud stays there instead of worrying about these quirks you mentioned with backblaze. i appreciate your insight for highlighting this though, useful video.
Thank you so much! I need a backup to where I can delete from my desktop. You really saved me so much time. I recently lost a hard drive and didn't have a backup for my back up. VERY FRUSTRATING. But thanks again for the video!!
Thanks for the video ! I didn’t know this. I’m going for back blaze. I’m a photographer with a hard drive at home with all my files. Backblaze will act as a redundant back up. I want it to perfectly mirror my home external hard drive. As of now I only have 3 TB of raw files so it’s manageable in terms of physical hard drives
Go for it! Just remember that if you disconnect that drive, backblaze wont continue to back it up. If you also delete files from the drive, backblaze will also delete it on their end. (this is of course based off of my experience about a year ago).
Patrick Ramdial ah maybe I didn’t understand. Can I connect the drive, upload my pics and once it’s done eject the drive while still having the back up on backblaze ?
Thanks for your vid! I'm travelling canada in a van for at least 1 year from May on. Thought about using backblaze, but the fact, that I have to connect every 3-4 weeks a external hard drive and it needs to sync about 3-4 hours every time is a big con for me. When I get you right, thats not the case with crash plan? Files won't get deleted, I don't need to sync the ext. hard drive all the time, when I'm using it again after dettaching and I can choose files to upload right?
Interesting perspective, I'm researching both and as I think about this I'm really not sure what I'd prefer regarding the deleted files. There are a lot of files that get deleted on purpose. If i had a backup that had every file I ever had and never removed any after I had deleted them then that would probably be a real mess to figure out when I need to actually restore a computer and I just want a 'image' of the computer to restore. BUT there are also times where its necessary to keep things forever. For instance I have a Unraid server, what if something happened and my server was down for over a month and couldn't connect to Backblaze, I guess it would just delete everything....or the pita with external drives like you mentioned. Decisions Decisions!
Definitely switch away from CrashPlan. As a 5-year CrashPlan user, you should get out now. Their whole system is broken and I doubt they're trying to fix it.
@@jordanbanko5347 Crashplan quadrupled my rates from less than $5 / month to $20 / month when they went to a "small business" package. This also came with new software, which didn't work nearly as well as the "home" package before. I kept using it, but a couple months later it simply stopped doing backups. The software would fail to connect to background service, or just get stuck in a loading loop. Since I could not open the software at all I had no clue what was going on. I tried getting hold of their support but no luck. I could not even log into my account thru the website, it goes into a loop of login -> you need to login -> login. So at that point I finally cancelled and switched to cheaper service.
Love First hey! Thanks for watching. Yes. We are still using crash plan. Since we have started backing up, it hasn’t stopped. We have over 15tbs of data. Because of the virus, we might actually have a period where we actually get fully backed up. I know that they function under “code 42” now. I haven’t heard any news of them shutting down.
@@PatrickRamdial One more question. Is it $10 a month for every drive you plug in or can I just use it as a cloud storage and just put all my footage on there, kind of like google drive or time machine on mac
Love First so yeah, it’s for all your storage. You can connect and disconnect as much drives as you want. BUT! It’s not meant to be accessible like Dropbox or google drive. There’s no previews to your files. So for example, I can’t send a video to a client and have him check it out and download it. It’s solely for you to use as a backup just incase a drive crashes or something.
To your point on having to reconnect external HD's I think Backblaze offers a "Forever" option now! www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-7-0-version-history-and-beyond/
i have had many bad experiences with Backblaze, erratic backups on my mac, no help from their tech support, previous backups disappearing and reappearing terrible just so bad. I can't believe im the only one. Lots of trouble downloading my restores.
This is helpful thanks. If you are using Backblaze and one of your drives fails how long do you have to replace it before Backblaze decides to delete your backup?
Crashplan should no longer be considered for anything related to backup. It is dying a slow death. They have so many problems right now I do not even know where to begin. I am a long time supporter and subscriber of Crashplan. Sadly, they have gone downhill very quickly. I believe they have some major infrastructure issues going on right now. It is time to start considering another service that has it more together. I believe Crashplan's days as a company are numbered, at least from my most recent experiences with them. Again, it is very sad what it has come to for Crashplan!
I am inclined to agree, based on paying 4X more than I used to for a service that does not even back up any of my machines and being unable to access my account at all.
Could you store unlimited files with Crashplan by filling an external drive and backing it up then erasing and reformatting that same drive and fill it up again ad infinitum to essentially store many terabytes of files using only a single 1TB external drive for example?
Patrick Ramdial yeah that would probably be a violation of the terms of service but who doesn’t love a good technicality. ua-cam.com/video/2lcm7IMKwbE/v-deo.html
I’m not a video or photo guy. But I am a family man with TONs of irreplaceable memories on vid and photo. I’m looking for a safe, secure way to ensure these memories will never be lost. Currently taking suggestions

Gorky D what’s wrong with it? I was planning to join

Patrick Ramdial iCloud, because I am a dumbass and don’t know of anything else.
None at the moment! Thank your uploading this video. It was created more questions that it answers lol . but thank you. All a learning curve.
