Secondly, who else would the tigers be paying lots of money to? He's their only creative option and the only player still at the club with any accolades. Also, bear in mind, Melbourne, easts and Canterbury offered brooks more money to leave and he and nufa were the only two who stayed purely out of loyalty. Literally the only thing that the 50 coaches of wests in the past 10 years agree on, is that brooks can play, the club drags him down and hangs him out to dry.
I mean at the time I guess the clubs thought they were that much but surely as a half you get that sort of money after you have played 5-6 years and gotten at least a premiership maybe 2. Clubs are so quick to offer overs to their players as they're scared of other clubs poaching them first, they won't be the only players as well to get ridiculous offers like those
I don't care who gets paid what, but they should max a player cap amount. Else these clubs will just continue to sh*t where they eat. They should also raise the minimum to $250k with 2 in $100k & have to run a semi-pro reserve grade team to ensure quality of NRL matches. If a team could hold the 5 key positions full-time in a reserve grade, pay the remaining on sem-professional rates & hours, this would keep a strong NRL comp. Each team needs a second hooker, half, 5/8 & full back. Just look what Reynolds did with Bronco's. So much matters if you have an experienced half, while at the same time you could be training a future one in the juniors into reserve grade. But to do this, they need to be paid. An 18 year old has to make a decision. Go footy or go get a job or another career. If they could offer them 10 years in reserve grade with potential for NRL, 10 years on $100k is a pretty good start. Imagine being 18 years, offered a conditional $100k for 10 years. Even if that is all you do. $1 million in income by 28 years. I mean SASR have to be 19 years, get paid under $100k and could well be stuffed body wise by 28 years. All they have to fall back on is Military experience. Sure they might get a good job in private security, but as if a 10 year reserve grade player, on $100k can't do TAFE or Uni for post career. They don't do footy 24/7. The key is that the greedy NRL toffs & the greedy of the players could spell the end if they don't watch it. Several years now & only a handful have looked competitive for GF. Bringing in another 17th team. That's another 30 players. From where? If I was the Gold Coast, I'd be asking the NRL for pilfering money. Pay players under cap money, but hunt Rugby Players in Ireland, UK, Europe (maybe even round ball for full back). If the Gold Coast held about 5 locals, they could fill the rest with internationals. Since Gold Coast is our Vegas by the Sea. Make it a team of World Stars. French Rugby Fullback, English & Welsh Rugby Wingers & Centers. English RL forwards & half. # While I am at it, forget USA RL. Focus on Canada. If they could develop a summer RL comp in Canada. The players that are any good in USA would go there. Just use USA RL as a development comp with potential to filter players through a stronger Canadian comp linked to NRL & Super league. Canada needs a team in the Super league. That way we have all 5 commonwealth countries playing League. Will work well for CANZUK.
