  • "Make contact; don't break your sternum," jokes Matt Chan at the CrossFit Competitor’s Course, during a talk about common faults in the chest-to-bar pull-up in both the gymnastic and butterfly kips. "Generally someone who lacks strength...............someone who has to pull to the bar"
    Yeah cause kicking my legs up taking my back muscles out of the exercise while swinging like a fish out of water displays true strength!

    • @Miiiiiiighty
      @Miiiiiiighty 7 років тому +5

      His point doesn't make sense to be honest ...
      It's like saying " Generally someone who is gonna use minor kip and pull mainly using his strength is lacking strength" .. Yeah sure the guy lacks strength so he is using a more strength demanding variation..
      More like lacking proper CF mechanics or technique..

    • @letmecommentalready
      @letmecommentalready 7 років тому +19

      It makes perfect sense, if you slam your chest into the bar like the guy did, it means you had to kip just to get TO the bar, and you didn't go PAST the bar and brush your chest on the way down. You two just don't listen or pay attention apparently.

      So a guy that does 10 STRICT pull-ups in proper form, regardless being into bodybuilding/calisthenics SHOWS to have less STRENGTH than a dude doing 10 kipping pull-ups (C2B)? This "coach" should learn HOW to properly use sport-specific terminology.

    • @coghlanfisher6475

      That's Matt Chan and in his prime he was one of the world's fittest men. Guarantee he can do upwards of 25 to 30 strict pull-ups. It takes the same amount of work to get your chest to the bar using a kip as it does strict, the only difference is when it is done strict you are just localizing the workload to a smaller muscle group, therefore you won't be able to get as much done in a given amount of time doing something strict compared to the most efficient butterfly kip option. Therefore, a kip allows for more work to get done, and more work capacity means a greater fitness level. In the sport of CrossFit when the only requirement is to get your chest to touch the bar for 30-40 reps (often times more) in a wod, you're going to do it in the most efficient way possible. That means using your more powerful muscle groups like your hips and lats as a gymnast would. Its the sport. The goal is a fitness that is broad general and inclusive, not the same goals of bodybuilders.

      It's not a lack of strength it's your body engaging your lats(pulling muscle) so assist you for safety reason. If anything it's because you have to much strength and lack of what ever technique it takes to do a killing pullup

    when you see dive-in pushups, do you protest "no, these are not true push-ups"
    yes they're not strict pushups.
    yes they're easier.
    nobody will deny it.
    they're just a different exercise.
    when you see push jerk, do you go "nah, this is not a correct push press".
    you'd be correct again, of course.
    it's not.
    and yes, push jerk is easier.
    but again - it's a different exercise.
    it's quite similar.
    the main goal is the same.
    but it's a different variant.

    • @trbd

      Agreed. Beginners are usually recommended to do lighter variant of the exercise first before doing the commonly known variant of the exercise itself in its correct form. The lighter variants are, of course, result in less gains but hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere.

      @@budderman3rda push jerk is NOT a push press. A better comparison would be strict press to push press. They are both presses, one is strict while the other is lower-body assisted. When doing butterfly chest-to-bar pull-ups, yes you arch as your chest touches the bar down on the way down. However, when using a gymnastics-style kip, you should NOT be extending the spine when touching your chest to the bar. You should remain in the hollow and pull (“push the bar down”) lower on your chest or to your sternum. This actually allows for a greater range of motion and less strain on the shoulder.
    Love Matt Chan, but he is wrong about that part.

      it's for speed.......do you actually think these guys have no strength?

    • @CrypticDiabolo
      @CrypticDiabolo 7 років тому +1

      Chris Finkbohner No they definitely have strength, enough to pull off that move, but there's a big difference between exerting the momentum to complete a pull-up and pulling yourself up from a static hold. I only find myself performing a Kipping pull-up when I really want to finish my set and I can't quite find the strength to get my chin over the bar, but everytime I do I feel like I cheated to complete it. It's just not the same thing, and it doesn't have the same impact. I used to thing I could do close to 20 pull-ups in one set but when I started doing them the proper way I realized how wrong I was.

    • @chrisfinkbohner

    • @VirgilRicks
      @VirgilRicks 7 років тому +2

    • @gtfobitziamawesomeboss7242
