When Rat Race first debuted I didn't like the idea that there was a chance one or more of the rats might not start or finish since they're randomly chosen windup rats. Over time this proved to not be an issue as it happens very infrequently and I've grown to really like this game.
What makes this game is the total randomness of the rats. You never know which one is going to win. If a contestant wins all three rats they’re at least guaranteed to walk away with something if not the car then one of the two smaller prizes.
Another fun fact, during one of the price is right at night episodes, Rat race was rethemed to The Amazing Rat Race to promote the then upcoming season of The Amazing Race.
Rat Race is the gameplay that sounds similar as Walk of Fame, a retired pricing game when the contestant has to price within $1, $10 and $100 high or low respectively.
If the grand prize is superb, then it doesn't matter a whole lot if the win percentage rate is low. Everyone expects "Golden Road" not to be won, but contestants love watching people try and they do sometimes win.

While it's true that you can play perfectly and still lose, that's true of a number of car games (Spelling Bee, Let 'em Roll, Pass the Buck) and even some non-car games (Secret X). I do like that you get at least something for your effort for getting all three, and the odds of getting only the least prize is only 10 percent (same odds as getting all three prizes).
Mark I must tell you rat race and pay the rent actually debuted in the same season however pay the rent debuted first with his first playing all the season 39 premiere on September 20, 2010
I can't help but wonder about what Bob Barker ever thought about this game. As you mentioned in your video about Finish Line Bob was not a fan of the horse racing element to the game
notably though, these rats are clearly depicted as windup toys ("mechanical rats"). It isn't like Finish Line that resembled an actual horse race and not a toy horse. I think Bob would be ok with it if he saw it as it's meant to look, like a bunch of slotcar toys that look like windup rats
I don't care for this game, it's like one of the only games that can be played perfectly and still have a 40% chance to lose. The other day there aired an episode of TPIR where she didn't guess any of the prizes and didn't win any rats at all, so she immediately lost. Then Drew asked "Which rat would you have picked?" and ran the race anyway. She picked the green rat that came in last... lol I guess she was really having a bad day.
Guessing the first two prices are tough but guessing the last prize with a $100 range, i would say $200. That way I be able to get one rat with a $100-$300 range

Love that game. Recently someone failed the game entirely and the rat she picked ran off course (they ran a race, for keeps)😅
