"This is Penelope, she likes her personal space. This is Colin. He also likes Penelope’s personal space." Made me cry laughing. The knee was CRAZY and so was him putting his whole arm around her to lead her up the stairs in the next episode. He really does love being in her personal space.

I don't know how people don't see Colin's flirting with girls scene the way I do. He thinks he needs to be this kind of guy in society but he isn't looking for a wife so he isn't really leading the girls on. But he is boosting their confidence like crazy.
It is a perfect mirror to the way Pen wrote her first LW of the season. Calling out girls who could turn into wallflowers and using her LW magic to make them seem like the most eligible ladies of the season.
Colin is doing the same kind of thing. Imagine how those girls will feel once he walks away. "Colin Bridgerton told me I was pretty, he told me I'd have young men lining up. I must really have a chance this season!"
Can't you see how sweet he is in that scene, and what a people pleaser? Besides he already had a reputation for harmlessly, boyishly flirting with all the ladies in the Ton. This isn't really that new for him. We just haven't seen it much yet.

I never thought about it that way but the difference is his charm got more “sturdy” on his travels but he now doesn’t deep down actually like the flirting because how could people be so eh about one of the most meaningful things that people do but he didn’t make that realization fully until he finally lost the v head canon because idk if this is confirmed I think Colin was a v seasons 1&2 but lost it before season 3 and then he became the mold again that society wanted him to be only this time he actually knows what the boyish flirting should have meant yet he can’t express how he really feels about how it should be

(some mentions of things that happen in later episodes!!)
I find the 'it is all merely clothing' comment really interesting too. I think the colors of his clothes reflect which side of him he is presenting in any given scene. The brown is the new player Colin mask he is putting on, and his bridgerton blue is the real him. When there is a mix of both is when the real him is peeking through. When he first arrives in the first episode he is in an almost full brown ensamble, which is directly opposite to when he interrupts Debling and Penelope's dance in the last episode, where he is in almost full blue. An easy way to differentiate between the two coats he uses is that the blue one has several smaller buttons down the front that are close together, while his brown one has bigger buttons that are further apart. His blue coat is more of a blue-black, so its harder to tell but you can tell when the light hits it!
My favourite example of this is in the air balloon scenes, where his vest is a striped brown and blue. Even the way the vest is striped gives the illusion that the real Colin (blue) is peeking through the cracks of his 'armor' (brown). At the risk of sounding insane, we can even take this analysis further. He arrives to this air balloon event with his brown coat on, and even says to the lords he speaks to that he is 'back'. This is a step back from the blue he sported in the second half of ep2, which he was with Pen for most of. After talking to Penelope he takes his brown coat off, and cannot take his eyes off of her. Finally, when he sees Penelope is in danger, he throws his coat to the guys he is standing with, and runs off to save her. There is more examples of this, like when he and pen are alone in bridgerton house (in his comfort place alone with his comfort person), he is sporting a blue and white vest, with no hints of brown. The last example ill put on here is in ep4. When the scene transitions from the library to the brothel, the coat he is wearing respectively changes from the blue one to the brown one.
I could talk about this forever, and have heavily considered making an in-depth video analysis on it despite never having posted a video in my life lmaooo. I could just be really looking into this but the more scenes i look at the most it makes sense to me!

    • @hazelalafif
      @hazelalafif 4 місяці тому +22

@@raydarkwolf I am so incredibly tempted! I could yap about it to no end. I also think that Penelope's clothing has significance and reflect her slowly taking over Colin's thoughts (or the way he feels about her). I haven't dove too deep into this yet but generally she starts off the season in Featherington green, moves on to blue-greens, and by the end of the season is in bridgerton blues. I think her jewellery is also significant. She starts off the season in gold, which is what the Featheringtons wear, and wears a lot more silver by the end of the season, which is what the Bridgertons wear. She also wears a lot of dresses that are similar to Violet's in adjacent scenes, which is interesting cause Colin and Pen's story is the most similar to Violet and Edmund's!

Penelope apologizing repeatedly to Eloise and seemingly holding almost no grudge actually makes lots of sense! If we look at 2x08, Penelope INSTANTLY regrets lashing out at Eloise after she insulted her with 'insipid wallflower'. She runs after Eloise, tries to find her and apologize again and then the Colin and "not in your wildest fantasies" makes Penelope cease the search after Eloise. And then narrator Pen goes on about how "silence can wield more power than words", explains a lot why Pen decided to keep her distance after season's end. In S3 she also concludes her reasoning with the "I avoided society because I didn't know if you'd want to see me."

40:44 I think she missed him. I think that frolicking in the garden moment is her getting caught up in the euphoria of having him back in her life. I think the handshake is played, not so much that she has given up on him, but as a reminder to herself that she must. But she can't stop her feelings for him, and I think she's been so lonely without Colin or Eloise that she is genuinely relieved. I think it also goes to show us that, despite what he said about earning her forgiveness, Penelope has already forgiven Colin. She can't help herself.

I really missed a scene between Violet and Colin where Violet would say "you should relish in every moment you have left with Pen, as when she inevitably marries, you cannot be this close anymore, as her husband would not be ok with it". I wish there was this point of "I'm going to lose her friendship" before even having this "I'm going to lose her romantically", I think it would've been a good step towards his realization in ep 4.

I feel like I'm the only person who genuinely enjoyed the scenes with Colin flirting with debutantes😂. Don't get me wrong, I didn't find it attractive but I did find it kind of sweet. I understand that he's doing it to put on a certain kind of rakish persona, but the way he's going about it is really great actually.
He's not super gross with the things he says, he makes sure to flirt with all of them simultaneously and not give any particular attention to one, so that no-one will misconstrue his intentions, and he's making them feel good in the process. As someone who really enjoys innocent flirting, and as someone who wasn't used to getting a lot of compliments, him flirting with me like that would have been a real confidence booster.
So when everyone else is cringing and gagging, I'm just here grinning at the screen and feeling all warm and fuzzy.

When I first watched these scenes, I felt that they weren't really for me. But I was reading someone's opinion on this and it was much like yours. Colin doesn't give these debutantes false hope, he gives them equal attention, and the things he says are not sleazy.
The part I found most interesting is about the brothel scenes: Colin treats the sex workers with the same consideration, he kisses them both and gives them equal attention, and he apologizes before leaving. On the other hand, previous scenes with sex workers in the series, like with Anthony, are purely transactional. Colin is the only one who interacts with them.

The Penelope's personal space comment was hilarious and so true. What stood out to me was everytime he came to see her or chase after her, the comment was "what are you doing here" or "what are you doing out here?" It doesn't seem to even cross her mind that he cares in anyway. There isn't even any thought from her at the ball when he almost kissed her in front of everyone. I wanted to see more from Colin, but we could have seen more from Pen as well. I do realize there was not enough time to develop all that on screen. I wanted to see him ask her to dance or bring her lemonade. However, I have a feeling in the second part we are going to get some huge romantic declarations of love from them.

As a period piece, especially Austen, fan - it is those stolen glances, pining, and let's just say it 'hand porn' (looking at you Kanthony to keep bringing it) that draws me to these shows because I live for the artistic exploration of a romanticized history. They push a little more drama than is needed sometimes but it has grabbed new audiences. Okay, hear me out, hear me out … while Colin is putting on a new mask/shield, I feel Penelope’s transformation is actually reflecting her true self. Her new clothes are a door cracking open to her future and a step into visually establishing that she is desireable without faking it. Colin has all the phrases he thinks will impress the ladies but Pen just isn’t able to finesse that skill (thankfully).
Internally, Pen wants to find marriage so she can find happiness/escape the toxicity of her life. Colin encourages Pen to be authentically her true self. He is the one lifting her up, where Pen has done that for Colin in the past. She walks differently, fidgets less (yes she still fidgets, she’s Pen, but more noticeable right?). The old Feathering clothes were never her. Colin’s old clothes were always him. Role reversal and parallel stories coexisting at their finest 14:52

.I started to rewatch and the little things i noticed in episode 1, there is so much I miss out.
I think there is a superficial nature of Eloise and Cressida relationship because from episode 1 there are so many hints .
When Lady Violet is talking to Kate about Eloise new friendship, the camera pans to Eloise, Cressida, Gregory and Hyacinth. Eloise is talking to her siblings and completely turned towards them, she only talking and engaging to them whilst they facing both Eloise and Cressida but only engaging with their sister. Whilst, Cressida is only facing Eloise and has her back to the other siblings. Even though she is facing Eloise, Eloise isn't even looking or facing towards her direction- she's completely turned away.
It's looks like her visual clue how Cressida is inserted in but not part of the family.
During the 4 season Ball ( which now I am appreciating so much more how beautiful the decor is. And also how the conversation of character reflect the season their standing behind) when Eloise kept looking at Penelope, she makes the "mean" comment about shift stitch - Cressida looks so proud of her whilst Eloise looks apologetic once she realises that she hurt the girl feeling.
Cressida ripping Penelope dress. This is direct parallel to season 1 when Cressida spill wine on Penelope dress (a dress that is not citrus and looks very beautiful ) in front of a suitor. Collin see it's was malicious just by Penelope reaction and immediately shut Cressida down and dances with Penelope. Whilst, Debbling like oh accident happens let me get you a maid. My man ...😐
Also, Collin takes a triple take at Penelope and the whole ball is in Penelope perception. Even the camera angle you can see it's adjusted to Penelope height so everyone looks so tall and imposing.
When Collin follows her out, he notice she upset, talks to the men about her being upset (indicating he isn't embarrassed by her) and literally runs after her. When he meets her first, he tried to play it off like he came out from fresh air because she's clearly been crying and very cutting towards him- so he doesn't want to draw attention to that. He gives her a very genuine compliment and tries to be charming and banter like before. He mentions the writing because he was genuinely upset she didn't write and he doesn't know why. When she mentions about courting - he has deer in headlight look like omg 😳 whose said anything about marriage and then she elaborate (Penelope picked up on how he doesn't know what she's referring to), he actually gulps. And when he says let's talk in private, he meant it like let's not have argument on public but private setting (which is even more scandalous).
I think the whole scene Penelope has been nursing so much hurt and she taking everything he says in the wrong way.
I just noticed more small details, like Lord Fife was about to say something scandalous to Francesca, but he glances at Anthoney and instantly censor himself.
Or the one Asian lady whose talking stitches with Eloise - her hair looks very similar to Korean Royalty styles.
After the Episode 1 ending, I kept thinking why does he hate Lady Whistledown with such passion? And I have a theory. He suspected it could be Eloise before, so he assumed, despite the scandal of Lady Crane, that Eloise did it with the best of attentions. Similar, to what Anthony said at least she spared you from the scandal. Whilst, now he assume that person whose behind this gossip has malicious attentions. So the scandal, insult and embarrassment is not justified for noble reason. That why he wants to get justice for all the hurt this person caused his family. We know he has a hero complex and would want to stop this person from hurting the people he cares about. Especially, throughout part 1 Lady Whistledown keeps hurting people with her gossip. She insults him and Penelope also gets dragged through scandal. Lady Whittledown is the bane of his existence, ( and apparently the object of all his desires) every low point of his she is there spreading the gossip about him and those he cares for.
I can't wait for the DRAMA of when he finds out 🍿

I think Colin's "I will never forgive her." comes from a place where he believes people simply want forgiveness after being exposed for wrongdoings. I took it as him presuming that when he'll get to know who Whistledown, she'll be regretting writing about his family and Marina and she'll be asking for forgiveness just because. For peace of her mind, for to be forgiven in the eyes of the ton, for to not be tormented with someone being mad at her.

It reminds me of s2 when he went to marina and said ‘I’m sorry and I forgive you.’ To her. Saying you forgive someone without them apologizing is basically a roundabout way of asking them to say sorry to you lol. If they want to do a cool callback, I think Colin should acknowledge that conversation because Marina did say something that can be applicable to the LW situation. Marina said she doesn’t ruminate on the past and leaves it there and holds onto reality and the few good things of the present and learns to be content with it. The dream of getting retribution for perceived wrongs just hold you back.
With pen’s justifications of writing whistledown she sees it as a reclaiming of her autonomy and voice and to hold a mirror to the ton. To emphasize the virtues she values and the values supposedly upheld by the ton and how they are all hypocrites and are all covertly ignoring those values.
She uses it to protect herself financially as she is at risk of being a spinster while also having unstable finances because of her father.
She uses LW as a weapon and protection. Her words actually being helpful and saving the bridgertons from ruin in the grand scheme. In the moment they are chatty words that create middling scandal, but overall are a net positive and beats the outcome of being in a loveless marriage or being viewed as a man that impregnated a woman out of wedlock regarding Colin and Marina (the ton would not believe anyone but LW that Colin wasn’t the father I just believe that) and preventing Eloise from getting guillotined or getting charges from the queen.

    • @meowngi77
      @meowngi77 4 місяці тому +2

@@surette2012 beautifully said! I agree completely and I also thought of Marina! Even tho they were familiar with each other, why would Colin expect Marina to feel the need to apologize? I think he's projecting and his apologies are also unasked for. I understand him, because I'm the same, I would feel the need to be forgiven but also apologized to, but I think it was shown in a fabulous way why his wishful thinking is uncalled for in those situations.
We also can speculate that he's assuming LW is someone he at least knows. But I still think it has nothing to do with it. Because of his character and projecting his views he would expect an apology no matter who LW is.

I am with you saying that someone (Colin or Ton) should have noticed/pointed out how inappropriate is (has been) his behaviour with Pen. Infact, before the show I thought that LW was going to write about this like: in the ton point out how is inappropriate, she has to write it but she has to downplay and (as in the book) she write that no Bridgerton would be never interested in Penelope and if this happend she should stop writing. But pointing out on LW, would made Colin realise (maybe) and (as in the book) he wouldn't like how the ton really thinks that Penelope is unlikeable.
Other thing: i like that El is reading Emma (of course foreshadowing) but I built in my mind that since El never read novels, and Pen is, instead, fond of novels, I wonder if Pen ever told El that Emma was her favorite novel (of course) and now El is reading it ad a way to connect to Pen. And if so... will she understand why Pen likes this book?
I know is a theory but totally building air castles 😆

I got real mad at Colin for a second when he smirked at Eloise’s new reading material. (A. I object to categorizing Austen as primarily romantic literature but I understand why people do and there’s nothing wrong with romantic literature it’s just a genre nerd argument thing on my part; and B. Penelope loves romantic stories Colin, she tells Debling so, and YOU LOVE THEM TOO, you goofy-ass fog-filled rose-garden kiss-dreaming wattpad-journalling sentient puddle of tears and drool for the sake of Penelope Fetherington.)

Your Emma point coincides with my Easter egg theory. Eloise is enjoying her new romance book. In the book, Emma invites herself to “help” friends to better their lives and find love/perfect matches. (Eh hem, Colin)
Then, towards the end of Emma, it is obvious that the true love match was surprisingly Emma herself. 👍🏻
There is also the thought that Eloise is next in line, if you think about the ordering of books and how “Emma” was actually next … so Eloise’s book is next.

Why can’t someone just be quiet and introverted without having to give them a mental illness or whatever kind of neurodivergence for it. Not that there is any problem with that representation, I just don’t see it here. You are so right about her getting along with and keeping up with the whit of her siblings. She understands social queues, just prefers to be more reserved. And while we are on the subject, I’m really pissed with the end just because they built up this whole thing about her having a different kind of love and then totally negated it by having her infatuated with Makayla. It would be one thing to have Makayla be smitten and set up the pining from her side, but I think it does the plot to that point a disservice to bring that up for Fran so quickly. Let her have her love with John and deal with the other story later. It was just unnecessary

I don’t think so, I believe he was so restless in his journey and the fact that pen never replied to his letters that he preferred just hopping from city to city collecting random experiences to write about just to fill the void of not having communication with the one person who used to write back to him. I saw a comment earlier about him having a 122 day journey between 17 cities that accounted that he must have spent 3 to 4 days in each city. So that’s just restlessness and wandering. And the showrunner confirmed that not getting replies from pen prompted him to start his journal, which also speaks about how lonely he feels even in the company of others. I’m looking forward to a confession of him saying that the only reason he started to write was because of pen

Oh the space, that personal space. She literally put space between their normal correspondence and it was emptying for him.
Yep, yep, yep. He was really beginning to lose it. It totally ramped up after coming back and him realizing he missed her, her letters, their familiarity and the denial of her being nice and automatically apologizing for something he couldn’t even fathom … her finding out about his boastful declarations to his supposed friends. Confounding feelings only this season? Oh sweet Colin, confounding indeed. He thought it was the kiss, but it was so much more. Everyone also is pointing out Luke’s glow up. While he wanted to get ready for “boom boom” S3 scenes, it also makes sense to me that he was hungry overseas, but couldn’t pinpoint it. The man literally drinks only lemonade, tea, and a little booze these four episodes … until the cake inspiration from Pen. (Of course we know he did eat, but not important for the normal Colin eating all the biscuits he normally would have.)

As someone who read the books before seeing the show I've loved all the changes they've made to polin's story except for the Marina and Colin storyline. I felt like it was unnecessary to add a betty/archie/veronica triangle and have a very cliche "who is she" love at first sight moment for Colin. And then having her forever tied to the lady whistledown reveal where there are already more than enough reasons for Colin to be upset about it. That's probably the one thing I'm scared about is how they mention it in part 2. I also feel like for someone who pays attention like your amazing analysis that it's easy to see that he wasn't in love with Marina but he is now with Pen but I don't think it would be for the GA to differentiate and I don't think I can blame them for that as they showed him to be heartbroken even into season 2.

Then when Penelope is getting her new wardrobe she asks for something like they might wear in Paris. Also a point never considered was that Penelope didn’t need to live under her sisters or mother’s thumb. She could have lived quite comfortably and independently on the money she made as Whistledown just as Cressida was planning to do on the reward or blackmail money.

I hope that Colin’s feelings on the Marina situation come to a middle ground later on this season. I totally understand where Marina was coming from and I don’t blame her for what she did at all, but I do think Colin still needs to accept that what she tried to do to him was, actually, really awful. He was rightfully very angry when he first found out and then after some time away I think he looked back on their ‘relationship’ with rose-colored glasses and his hero complex/want for purpose made him think that he should’ve stepped up and married her anyway and maybe they still could’ve been happy together, and Marina calls him out for this but she also belittles him for it and even trying to reach out at all despite her being the one that broke his heart and him being relatively cordial to her. I just hope that the nuance of this situation is addressed and when he finds out what Pen did he’s finally able to accept that, yes, Marina was just doing what she needed to do to protect herself and her children, even if she was taking drastic measures, and he could’ve been less angry with her or more understanding in the moment, but she also took advantage of his sensitivity and kindheartedness and not only was what they had not real, but it is for the best that it fell apart. I think he needs to learn that he can forgive her if he wants but he should forget her and understand that his good nature was something that was being used and manipulated, and that was not his fault, nor should he feel like he needs to leave it behind for fear of something similar happening again.
P.S. to anyone that may reply to this: If you have seen or read any spoilers from part 2 please do not tell me or I will cry. Thank you.

I recently discovered that Cressida’s mother’s name is Araminta, and that’s Sophie’s stepmother’s name in the books. So that’s just really exciting to speculate on

This occurred to me as well, but like that’s SO messy even for Shondaland drama and Benedict’s level of unstinting slutiness. 😂 Putting that affair into a Cinderella retelling for the “Prince Charming” and the “Evil Stepmother” dynamic would be WILD.

I think the "embarrassing" line fits perfectly with how last season ended and his comment. People assumed he was courting her and he laughed at the idea. He didn't say something more soft: "I'm not courting her but there's nothing wrong with that". From her pov it could be looked like he's embarrassed by the mere idea of courting her. So it made sense she called him out this season on that specifically. And it hurt like a bitch. It was on point, it hurt more than anything else.

40:38 i interpreted that moment as penelope like solidifying the fact that she does love colin bridgerton, the feelings that she still has for him are evident to her, but she is accepting the fact that they will only be friends from that point on (little does she know).

3:57 !!! For me bees incorporated in the wardrobe give hints as to whom is going to get 'stung' by love this season! Benedict has a bee on his waistcoat ep1 - hinting to him and lady Tilley Arnold BUT ALSO violet has BEE EARRINGS when presenting Francesca to the queen ! obv hinting at her and lady danbury's brother. So it's not just a symbol of the Bridgerton's father's death (rip) but also of budding love!

I think the fact that Colin uses Marina's name at certain times is because he feels very, very stupid about what happened. He is sensitive, romantic, he created a fantasy that he was in love, he even wanted to run away. But when the truth was revealed he felt stupid for fantasizing and romanticizing something that didn't even exist. So, for me, when he remembers Marina, he remembers how stupid he was. Worse, people looked at him as a young, foolish, romantic, even innocent boy. Being judged like that hurt him a lot. because that's who he is, sensitive. That's why he tried to change, to feel less...

I'm clearly in the minority on this, but I never thought Colin was insulting or making fun of Penelope at the end of season 2. Even the first time I saw it... my heart broke for her, but to me it was just the heartbreak of finding out your crush doesn't feel the same way, not the betrayal of a friend making fun of you behind your back. I was honestly surprised at all the vitriol aimed at Colin afterwards. And after seeing this season, I'm even more convinced. Allow me to make my case:
First of all, it would be incredibly out of character for him. It's not in his character to openly make fun of _any_ woman that way, let alone his best friend who he's incredibly protective of, and who he just promised to take care of earlier that same evening. This is the man who, even at the height of his trying-to-fit-in-people-pleasing-yeah-I'm-totally-a-rake-this-isn't-a-front-at-all era, refused to denigrate the contessa by sharing intimate details about her, despite his "friends" clear expectations, and the fact that she wouldn't be affected socially at all since none of them knew her. But his ingrained respect for women in general is too strong to be overcome, regardless of circumstance and expectations. And that was just some random woman he met on his travels, not his best friend. This is also the man who can't bear to hear anyone say _anything_ negative about Penelope, including Penelope herself, without immediately jumping to her defense. If any of those men had dared to insult her, he would have clapped back immediately. So the idea of him being the one to dis her that way is wildly out of character.
That's not to say people don't sometimes act against their own character. Of course they do. I could potentially buy a storyline in which Colin came to that point, if it was presented convincingly. But nothing we see from Colin in seasons 2 or 3 aligns with this supposed betrayal. Which brings me to my next few points...
If he had done so, if he had chosen to go against his own values and character enough to openly insult Penelope in order to save face or impress that group of men, it would have created a significant amount of cognitive dissonance. He would certainly feel at least some amount of guilt over it afterwards. Considering what we know of Colin, I could see him really beating himself up for it. What he wouldn't do, though, is simply forget it like any other random comment. That moment and that choice would stick with him, even if he tried to push it to the back of his mind or justify it somehow. So the fact that he doesn't even seem to remember that conversation when Penelope brings it up in this episode is telling.
Also consider this: Penelope cut Colin off immediately after that conversation, and Colin spent the better part of a year wondering why. We know he is always quick to assume the blame whenever those around him are upset, even if it has nothing to do with him. You've pointed this out numerous times yourself. And yet in this instance, when he truly is at fault, it doesn't even cross his mind? He attributed her silence to her simply living her life and having no need of him, like the rest of his family. This conversation wasn't even a flicker at the edge of his consciousness. If there was even a thought, or a lingering memory in the back of his mind of him saying or doing anything that might have upset her, he would have latched onto it and assumed the blame (and reached out to apologize and make amends). The fact that he didn't even consider the possibility that he had hurt or offended her tells me that he didn't do or say anything he thought was hurtful or offensive.
Even if we assume he did forget about it... once he was reminded of it and is made aware of the full weight of what he did- the pain he caused Penelope, to the point that it nearly ended their friendship- we would expect him to feel a great deal of retroactive guilt over it then. It would haunt him, especially once he falls in love and we see him struggling with feeling unworthy of her. And yet, it never comes up again. Even his apology is surprisingly upbeat. He is genuinely sorry for having hurt Penelope, but it feels more like he's apologizing for a mistake than a betrayal. The way he doesn't add any detail or mention anything beyond the facts she brought up further indicates that he still doesn't quite remember the conversation in question. He simply believes her that he said it and that it hurt her. And to his credit, he takes ownership of that and apologizes sincerely, without hiding behind good intentions. By the next episode he seems to have moved on from and forgotten it completely. Which would be very un-Colin-like, if he truly had made a conscious, selfish decision that caused so much pain to someone he loves. But it makes perfect sense if he was simply apologizing for a mistake that was brought to his attention.
It seems obvious to me that, in his mind, he was asked if they were courting and he said no. Period. It wasn't even worth remembering, let alone considering as a reason for Penelope's sudden distance. The "insult" of his comment comes entirely from the meaning and motivations *_we_* attributed to it. Peopled assumed he was embarrassed for others to think he was courting her because she's so undesirable. They assumed he was saying that the idea of courting her was laughable. They assumed that's the only reason he would deny it so emphatically. But he doesn't actually say any of that.
To be fair, his wording was unnecessarily emphatic. There are probably several reasons for this. To a certain extent, this might just be the platonic friend who is tired of explaining for the thousandth time that no, they are NOT dating their friend and yes, they REALLY are just friends, whose denials get more emphatic and insistent with each repetition because no one seems to believe them. Then there is the truth behind their observations... he _does_ have feelings for her, but he hasn't yet recognized them for what they are, which lends even more strength to his denials. He protests too much. But he's denying his feelings, not her desirability. There's the fact that he has no idea of her feelings for him, and in fact couldn't even imagine her having any. Which, paired with his own unrecognized feelings might result in a certain defensiveness... denying any desire to court her, since he assumes she would never want to court him. This is the same self-sabotaging self-preservation we see in Penelope after their first kiss... emphatically declaring that the kiss was a one-time thing, since she assumes that's what he wants to hear. And some of it probably did have to do with the company he was in, and matching their tone/banter to fit in. They asked about it in a light, joking manner, so he responded in a light, joking manner. But I don't believe even for a minute that he meant to imply that he wasn't courting her because she was undesirable. People just read that into it. They assumed that's the reason he was denying it so emphatically.
It's understandable that Penelope took it that way. We saw her hopes get built up so high only to be dashed so brutally. And it's human nature to jump to the worst, most painful conclusion. You pointed out her doing that in this very episode, when he wants to find somewhere they can talk alone and she assumes it's because he's ashamed to be seen with her. But, as you said, there's no evidence to suggest that. And I would argue that there's no evidence to suggest he would make fun of or insult her that way, beyond the comment itself. And the way we understand that comment is based on a lot more interpretation, assumptions, and reading between the lines than I think most people realize.
None of this lets Colin off the hook. His words _did_ hurt her, and may well have hurt her prospects with those other eligible men, regardless of his intentions. She has every right to be mad at him and to tell him so. He needed to be confronted about it, and to apologize to her and make amends. But it simply doesn't make sense for Colin to step so far outside his character as to throw Penelope under the bus like that, and yet not even remember doing it, or even _suspect_ that as a reason for her sudden distance, or feel any lingering guilt over it. It seems obvious to me that it was a hurtful mistake rather than callousness, cruelty, or even trying to win the approval of his peers.

35:18 i think that each of them has like their own assigned maid to wash them, dress them, do their hair, etc! so i think she cleans up after her in that sense? like maybe just her room? and varley is like the head of the maid's because she's lady featherington's personal maid. so i think there are cleaning maids and there are personal maids. but that is also just what i've gathered from previous seasons and whatnot
