Also putting this hear because a LOT of people do not realize this: Pen has ONLY danced with Colin this series since the beginning of the series. So when Debling danced with Pen, Colin saw for the ONLY time what it is like to see Pen dance with someone that is not him. The turmoil in this face is so real because he has never, EVER, considered Pen would dance with someone not him. The look in his face has much more meaning because Debling dancing with Pen is when he actually realizes Pen is moving away from him because someone finally led her to the dance floor that isn't him and he does not know how to process that she no longer will always be there for him.

the way you nail this and only to add to this, the fact that there was a conscious decision of Jack to make this Pen and Debbers dance similar to a wedding dance is perfection because not only, like you said, he is seeing her move away from him, she is being led straight to marriage if he doesn't do something, and because of his inner turmoil, he chokes.

@@calmhudie Yeah no I don’t agree with that Matthew MacFayden was golden and quintessentially the best introvert love match for Kiera not to say Luke Newtons wasn’t that good but I feel like I could’ve appreciated more turmoil scenes or background scenes I felt like we haven’t seen much of them together and a lot of focusing on other story lines versus season 2 where there was a lot of the story focused on Kate and Anthony and the tension being built but maybe it’s because they did us dirty with doing two parts why? It does nothing but make people just annoyed we are already gonna watch the whole thing a ton of times to catch the smaller parts. Season 3 feels like season 1 where they focused a lot on other people more so then the mains. Hope the second part gives Pen and Colin more of a time to shine.

The fact that they even thought of putting that little scene in, of him eating the same pastry that Pen had before?! And the way he looks at her standing next to Debling, then he looks at the pastry, then he eats it and then he licks his fingers?! They are insane for purposely writing that in. Insane.

I loved the overhead shot of the promenade before the camera goes to frontal Pen on the ground because you can see him walking behind her. Stalking her.Nice touch to show his angling directly behind her.

11:57 the willow scene is for whatever reason my favorite scene of part 1. there are so many amazing scenes, but this one?? them seeing one another a whole week after they had kissed?? the awkwardness, the eagerness, the nerves, the fondness?? had me squealing, covering my face, giggling, kicking my feet. ya know?? it those scenes where the butterflies come into play!! as much as i love a steamy scene or romantic scene, a ... heart fluttering scene always takes the crown for me 🥰

Same I read so many comments dismissing the leading roles this season and this is crazy to me. Both Nicola and Luke are killing it. I think people might have expected more passion in s3 but that’s not the point of Polin. It’s a different love story with no courting or heavy seduction. They already had a very strong connection. That’s why I personally prefer this season because it’s a genuine and deep love for one another. It’s still funny, dramatic and romantic. So they’re nailing it once again. I found them very relatable and so cute together. There is also a vast majority supporting them and finding them amazing this season.

This season is definitely my favorite one and I'm totally obsessed with it. It's the most relatable to me. The brooding prickly aggressive male lead thing is not my cuppa. Give me a sweet Colin any day. I know the steamy is on the way

For me personally, I thought Luke Newton’s reactions and facial expressions were spot on. If you think about the character of Colin, he is more tame, level headed, and chill than the character of Anthony. The way Colin has expressed emotion even in his most intense moments (like with marina) was played/perceived (intentionally) very rationally, and raw. What I mean is Colin wears his emotions on his sleeve. He can’t help but be honest about his emotions, therefore they won’t be displayed as exaggerated as Anthony’s. Being a character who is so sensitive makes him hyper aware of his own emotions, as well as others’, therefore it only makes sense why the character so easily forms deep connections with the people he chooses to. In contrast, Anthony bottles up all his emotions and tries to repress them, even the good ones. It’s no surprise that his yearning and hurt, when it does come out, it is more explosive and noticeable because Anthony quite literally cannot control his emotions because he so rarely allows himself to feel at all. It would seem forced and out of character for Colin to express himself exactly the way Anthony did because like you said, they’re different characters with unique personalities!
You’ll notice that Newton actually did mimic many of Bailey’s staging choices, the most noticeable being the body language. Bailey chose to portray his staging to make the viewer feel like we weren’t suppose to be seeing his turmoil. You’d only catch glimpses of it, but when you did it was jolting and out of control. The whole point and difference in the two actors’ performances is that Anthony will do whatever it takes to appear under control, where as Colin can’t help but feel his emotions and let them out for the world to see whenever they surface. Newton altered his positioning, posture, and stance slightly to better depict Colin’s clear display of inner emotions.

Like the music cue when he turns his head and like the subtle reactions he gives to show his jealousy and discomfort towards the whole thing. Chefs kiss 👌 same with pens micro expressions as well! I picked up every single nuance of his performance and I am so impressed with him. I adore his performance throughout this season. Strange how two people can view the same thing and see something so very different. Under the willow tree and in the cake tent were just pure gold alone. I also like rewatching the scenes before the kiss awakened him, because she already had his attention and he didn't even know it.

I love the scene where Colin first kisses Pen. When he stops, he does not pull away he just stands there looking down at her in such an intimate loving way. It's like he wants to see her reaction and he wants her to look back at him and she doesn't. She's just looking down and then says thank you and walks away and his hand is still up like what You're walking away. It was so romantic. If she had looked up, I feel like perhaps he might have said something. It's like he did want to say something but she walked away before he could. That's one of my favorite kissing scenes with them. It's not full of passion per se, It shows more genuine love and intimacy between the two of them.

It was so tender, and I think what I love about it is we got to see how far Collin would go for Penelope's comfort .Also the subtle things luke did were fantastic 😂😂just by his breathing alone you could tell that this kiss was changing Collin's life ,but also what I love about how he played Collin is it's the kind of love every woman needs ,someone who will never put their desires first over yours cause I genuinely believe Collin would have never done anything in that carriage if Penelope said she was engaged even with the line "Collin we're friends " you can tell that he was gonna say "I'm sorry let's remain friends " because he figures that's what she wants

"He assumed he'd say something flip and droll, like "Anything for you", perhaps, or maybe, "Every woman deserves at least one kiss". But as he close the bare distance between them he realized there were no words that could capture the intensity of the moment"

For the moment where Colin is about to talk to Penelope and they're interrupted by Debling, I definitely think that Pen on some level clocked what Colin was about to say, but was convinced she was just seeing what she wanted to see. I think her internal monolog was something along the lines of "Don't be stupid, Penelope. There's no way he would actually have feelings for you. You know it's not possible." She's refusing to get her hopes up, especially now that things are going well with Debling.

  • @OrlaDark
    @OrlaDark 5 місяців тому +34

Yes to the dream sequence, the best part was that he dreamed about her feeling the same (he's such a babygirl, in a great way XD), that was so romantic, that he needs to hear it before naughtiness kicks in lol
Regarding the last scene, honestly, I think Pen understands they were having a moment but they did in previous seasons too and it led to her heartbreak. I think her moving away and going with Debling was her "I need to be free from my delusion, I choose to move on, I don't want to be hurt anymore". Like, they had a moment in s1 finale, when she looked so hopeful and he just declared he was leaving. In s2 they have another heart-to-heart only for her to hear she doesn't count as a woman, then him laughing at the idea of courting her in s2 finale right after he declared she's very special to him. The girl just doesn't trust her instincts anymore because so many times it led to heartbreak.
And I also don't agree with the criticism of Luke's acting. He's doing so much in this season, so many different things, the rom-com, the horniness, the heartbreak, and in part 2 more angst and anger. In the final scene, you can literally see the storm inside as he watches her *gasp* smiling while dancing with another man. His conflicted feelings peaked there, he was ready to confess and it was scary that he might just missed his chance.
PS I so laughing at Pen's "Are you well?", no, Pen, he's not well, he looks at you like he wants to eat you (probably true >_>), it was so intense XD
    Thank you for your recap

I adore that babygirl Colin doesn't have a typical shmexy time dream that most males would be expected to have...it is almost a repeat of their super romantic first kiss, with the big difference being Pen verbally reciprocates his feelings back to him instead of running away. ❤ Also his subconscious added romantic details like mist and torches and a flowy romantic gown for her. He's a sweetie even in his own fantasies ❤❤

YEEEEEEES because let's be honest if it was really a horny dream it could've been so much more intense, instead it was him declaring his inability to stop thinking about the kiss and her reciprocating his desire and feelings, calling his name. Also interesting detail, I love how in the dream he says "I have not been able to stop thinking about our kiss...about you" because of course it's the kiss that left him speecheless and confused so he would be thinking about it. But then during the carriage scene and his acceptance of feelings he says "I have not been able to stop thinking about you...about our kiss", they changed the order because by that point his mind and heart had resolved he was falling for her so it was more than just about the kiss it was about her

I had such a long conversation with my friend from England about this season....he said this season felt so much like a British drama rather than an American drama. I think that is why Americans in general are so down on it, while Brits and so many other parts of the world (Brazil, South Africa, France, etc.) are all obsessed with this season. For me, as someone who LOVES British dramas and shows, I found myself in love with this season in a way that neither S1, S2 or even Queen Charlotte captured me. The prior two seasons had very bombastic male leads, who were exploding with emotions (passion, anger, aggression, sadness, etc.)...while this season we have Colin , who is a very internal character, who doesn't explode with emotions because he is experienced with wearing his heart on his sleeve. Colin is an empathetic person, he has had a lifetime learning how to deal with emotions. As someone who is deeply empathetic as well, I saw so much of myself in Colin. I'm always told that I don't have an overly expressive face, but that my eyes are the windows to my soul...this is how I view Colin. I think people were so thrown by Colin - especially in episode 1 - where he is acting like a bombastic flirt and feeling like that this not right and that something is off....without putting two and two together and realizing that the feeling of Colin being out of character and fake is what were are supposed to be thinking and feeling. That Colin is not the Colin we know....the nuanced, internal and sensitive Colin is the one we know....but because a nuanced performance demands more attention to understand and process, this gets missed so much. I cannot tell you how many reactors I watch who hate this season, but they are also on their phones or talking over all the scenes and not paying attention to what is actually being portrayed and miss incredibly important moments, so I have no idea how they can even say that it is bad when they don't even understand what was happening.

People who critique actors are misguided. They are filtering the character’s actions through their own choice s. Luke Newton is one of the strongest actors in the cohort. They are misguided. They want a character who is bombastic. He is brilliantly nuanced. He is a proper actor who prepares and plays every note needed. It annoys me to hear comments. Actors are judged for their work byPhilistinism . You are perceptive and look for the storytelling beats, production elements, and the writer’s interpretation. Well done, you.

He's so good, it blows my mind. I think a lot of people expect him to be like Anthony and for Pen to be more like Kate. That's why people think she forgave him too quickly in episode 1. But come on, she has loved this man for so long. Kate had just met Anthony, so there are different dynamics. About the dance in the last scene: I think she notices but dismisses it as temporary insanity. If you see she shakes her head to get back to her reality. Which is the Colin who would never even court her. So she goes. Leaves him. Because, in her reality, what he is going to tell her will in no universe be romantic. So whatever it is, even though he seems so distressed, can wait 4 min (estimate of the length of a full song).

I don't know what to say anymore about the acting because I think everyone is doing such a good job! I agree with you there are no weak actors in this show. The casting of the actors is really one of the strength of Bridgerton. In my opinion it's not relevant to compare the performance of Jonathan Bailey and Luke Newton because their respective characters are SO different. Like various people in the comments said Anthony is very flamboyant while Colin is more chill than Anthony. You don't play them the same way, you will not act the same way. Anthony represses his emotions, he fears them while Colin is driven by his emotions, he embraces them.
I am very happy and pleased with Luke's acting for Colin. He's an excellent actor. The scenes under the willow tree and the scene in the drawing room after the dream sequence have him displaying very different acting chops and all spot on each time. I can't understand how people cannot see Colin's inner turmoil and how he is dying inside, and being devastated watching Pen dancing with Debling.

And it is not lost on me that Debling initially ran off, and only once Pen fell and was in direct danger did he go back for her, but Colin's first instinct was to go for the balloon before it even got to Pen and placed her in direct danger. Although I think the editing of that scene could have been tighter to really show the danger (those balloon baskets are quite heavy and could do some serious damage) I think the scene was able to get across the differences in Colin and Debling as people. Like in the 1st episode when Pen's dress was ripped by Cressida, Debling instantly thinks it was an accident and goes to find a maid to help Pen, unlike Colin S1Ep1 when Cressida spilled a drink on Pen, he instantly knew it was not an accident and immediately shamed Cressida for it and took Pen out of that situation and followed it up with a fun dance instead of leaving her alone in that moment. I feel like these instances are a really good show not tell of how Colin is truly Pen's true love-match, and not Debling even though he is a good person.

Aside from the Queen Charlotte season, I think this season has some of the best acting I've seen in Bridgerton Luke Newton is a revelation to me, as I much prefer a more subtle acting style. This season is the most rewatched one for me. I keep have to watch Luke and Nicola and every time I discover something new about their performance. 👀🧐❤
BTW, I didn't notice the heart beat either until someone pointed it out.

what i found frustrating is that there was a lot of people hating on luke newton's expressions in the carriage scene (e.g the part where pen rakes her hand through colin's hair), saying that he was doing too much when these were the same people that were also complaining that luke didn't do enough like.. pick a side 😭

I think Luke is doing an amazing job! I saw a behind the scenes where the director was talking about how they filmed Luke's reaction to pen and debbling dancing at the end of episode 3. He said they started the scene with everyone in the ballroom, then they had only the people dancing, then only pen and debbling. So Luke was reacting to seeing everyone dwindle down to just those two.

Actually the scene where Colin watching Penelope and Debling dance is so interesting. Because from his pov Penelope is smiling throughout the whole dance but from Penelope's pov she isn't smiling at all. First I thought it was just a continuity issue but I think it was a choice to film it this way. Especially when I noticed some had the same thought. The fact that Penelope isn't smiling but from Colin's pov she is, is SO layered. What pains him is not only the fact that there is another man showing interest in his very good friend but also that the person who was usually smiling at him would now smile at someone else. Be with someone else. That's just amazing cinematography.

I absolutely loved the willow tree scene. It's hilarious how there is two different conversations going on. He is like let's talk about what happened between us and she is basically shutting everything down. That struggle was done so well. Poor Colin, that whole conversation was a dagger in the heart. I also love how she just nods her head and he comes running. Loved it!

It's definitely the season of subtleties I think. I feel what people tend to forget between Anthony's character and Colin's is that Anthony was already somewhat established as being more expressive and more vocal about things that bothered him. Colin on the other hand has always had a more thoughtful and reserved approach to handling issues. If Colin was acting like Anthony that wouldn't line up with his character. Colin as Violet says is more sensitive, so he puts a lot more thought into his actions. So when he is watching Penelope dance with Debling, he is clearly struggling to handle the possibility of losing her, but needing to appear collected still.

This is my favorite episode of the season and perhaps the entire series. Too many awesome, meaningful moments! When Colin asks his mamma what to do… he is such a gentle soul and then he tries so hard, but he can’t even find the words. He is completely possessed, HYPNOTIZED, GOBSMACKED! Pen is seriously worried about him. I made up that she is thinking he knows about LW or “the kiss” because it’s something crazy important… and in no way is she thinking or even hoping that he could be about to say “I love you.”

Hey, Sammy~ I wanna say that you are my favorite source of overthinking material for Bridgerton and I'm excited for your thoughts on Ben's season since he's also my favorite. Thank you for focusing on the smallest details as well and discussing them, you really changed the way I watch TV shows now. I love that you recognize the importance of side characters and their stories (as that's something I thought was lacking in the books and it bothered me), I appreciate that you say what you liked and didn't like about every scene - if you ever think of cutting something out, please don't! 😄 Remember that there are people like me who love to hear every thought you have.
I have two things to ask:
    1) Would you try making a video on every season and how you would rewrite them? Literally go episode by episode (or even scene by scene, knowing you, you probably would haha): exclude things you didn't like, fix things you somewhat liked, add things from the books or your own original ideas - give us the entire story how you think would have been perfect (or will be perfect, for future seasons).
    2) This one is specific for Polin season as I've been thinking about this a lot: one of the things that could fix the story (for me personally) would be if Pen is super stressed (and us with her) that she has to tell Colin she's LW, and when she finally tells him, he says: "I know." This would kind of keep the book sentence but not be about her loving him (I hated that he said that in that context haha) but her big secret. Then when Pen is speechless, Colin adds something like: he started suspecting her earlier and when he saw that everything fits, he followed her and saw it with his own eyes. And when she gets super scared about it, mentioning that he said he hates LW, he tells her that he loves HER and understands that LW is a big part of who she is, even though he doesn't understand why she did everything she did the way she did it. I think that this way the tension would still be kept in the show but it would mean a lot to me personally that Colin actually knew she was LW before he proposed, and that would fit his character well, considering he's shown not to hold grudges. He could also go on to say that he didn't want to pressure her into telling him something she didn't feel comfortable or ready to share, that he wants to be her support and offer her protection so she can continue doing what she loves because HE loves HER. I do love that sentence from Part 2 Trailer where Colin says: "Then what good am I to you?" and I'm thinking how well that could fit into this conversation but I don't have a scenario I like yet.
I would love to hear your thoughts. 💜

The way you nail every single thing you say👏👏I only want to add that I ABOLUTELY LOVE Violet's reaction to seeing her kids entering the ball arm in arm and then have her meet Marcus. You can tell when she is getting out of the carriage she is eyeing them and has the sweetest most motherly expression on her face. She is clearly proud of what she and Edmund did raising their children, because no matter what, they have each other'back, always. So having her appreciate that sibling bond and also hers with her late husband just seconds before she meets a new man whom she will bond over raising their kids is CHEF'S KISS.

The moment at the ball where the music slows and fades out, the heartbeat picks up, and it’s just this beautiful moment of the two of them reaching each other across the ballroom. The first time I saw it I was so THROWN by the way they did this because it’s SO subtle but SO effective!! It really narrows both of their worlds to just the two of them. The first time I watched the episode, I had to go back and watch those few seconds 5 or 6 times because I was LOSING MY MIND from the beauty of the moment so much so that I completely missed what Colin was even saying until the giddiness wore off. Colin’s voice gets a little echoey and dreamlike, Penelope’s soft acceptant nod that she heard him but it was also him bolstering his own courage to speak to here, his little stuttered steps when the soundscape returns like his world is shifted and he wants to follow her 😩

Another great recap ! I absolutely love your recaps because for the things I had noticed but maybe could not elaborate clearly on them you help me put them into words, you help me phrase it correcly. And of course for what I didn't notice it's always a treat to pick up on things.
I did notice the heartbeat thing during my first watch. I watch my shows and films with headphones. I like to be in my own little bubble fully immersed in the things I am watching. Listening with headphones really help to pick up on details like the heartbeat in this episode but also the way they breath in episode 2 when they have their first kiss. Exhaling, little gasps, all of that really add dimension to the scene and it gives a bonus of authenticity to it in my opinion.
I loved Debling. I was surprised how much I enjoyed, and yes loved, this character. I completely agree with you he could have been a blank canvas and still have fulfilled his purpose. And I thought that was the way it was gonna be with him ever since I knew there would be a male character playing a potential love interest for Penelope thus creating a sort of love triangle. I usually don't like love triangles. I sometimes hate them when they are very badly written. Most of the times I don't like them because the way they are written don't make the love triangles appealing to me. I just don't care. But this time. THIS time. I was so invested into it. Because to quote your words Debling is a well-rounded and fleshed out character with his own personality which makes him very very interesting. Again, the casting was perfect. I didn't know the actor Sam Phillips but I will certainly remember him fron now on. So yeah, I live when I get something that's well written and perfectly executed and acted. I applaud them for serving us viewers with such quality on that point! I had no expectation before watching and I was thrilled in the end.
Also Sam Phillips has a beautiful voice, just saying. It's like Jess Madsen (Cressida). Their voices are so pleasant to my ears omg.

I haven’t gotten to the hot air balloon part yet, but can I just say, very disappointed in the direction of that scene. I was screaming “WHY AREN’T YOU FOCUSING ON PENELOPE’S REACTION TO COLIN’S BARE ARMS?!” WHY ISN’T THERE A LAYERED HEARTBEAT SOUND TO SHOW THE AUDIENCE SHE IS H*RNY? Slowed focus on her reaction and a layered heartbeat sound could’ve fixed everyone misinterpreting the scene.
Also whoever directed this episode not choosing to focus on Luke Newton’s hand acting during the sweets scene will forever be the bane of my existence! He was SO giving me Mr Darcy with the way he restrained his one hand with the other, and the way he fidgets with his fingers as he’s talking with Penelope?! So good! Such such good acting from Luke that was missed by most because the director decided to not even spare one shot to his hands.

Luke Newton is an amazing actor! He’s at least as good as Jonathan Bailey. He’s subtle in the best way-it’s just that Bridgerton isn’t a subtle show. And in my opinion the lack of subtlety sometimes ruins the show in the important moments. So many Kanthony moments were over the top and overproduced.
Luke’s skills are perfect for Colin because the romance is tender and sweet and intimate, it needs that level of subtlety and control.

I have seen the part 2 - 2 minute trailer probably somewhere in the 25 times range. And it seems like every time I watch it the only time a GASP!😯 actually leaves my mouth is when they pan to Cressida in that red dress! I see the size of those sleeves do not even fit into the frame of the camera and I feel like I would PASS OUT in real life. I would throw myself on the floor, I would kick, I would scream, I would make a scene of myself so upset because I would think her sleeves only came to commit assassination! She is walking SLAY. She BREATHES Couture. Could you also reasonably apply the word "ridiculous" to her sleeves as well? Yes. In so many connotations.

First of all, thanks for these videos. I love the analyses of the scenes the most. As an English professor and somone who has watched season 3 an healthy amount of times, this channel can operate as my new fixation. Rather than just feeding my feral self, I can appreciate all you are saying about the analytical aspects of these scenes. That being said, I interpreted Fran's comment about going through suitors alphabetically as a dig to her mom because Violet and Edmund name their kids alphabetically. I did notice the heartbeat in that scene with Coliin talking about bravery. I also thought the stare down Colin does to Pen at the end of the episode is ridiculous. I counted it out, and it's about 12 seconds the first pause and almost 19 for the second pause. I definitely thought Pen was cued in by then that something was going on with him. I think that is what sets up her hesitation moments she has in episode 4. He has almost planted the seed for her to doubt the match between her and Debling. Up until that point, she had not really had any concerns.

I don't know if you saw this but, violet watched Colin in the scene where he was walking up to Pen before being interrupted by Debling. It's something I noticed only on the second or third watch. She was so tuned in and then disappointed when he wasn't successful.

Loving the reviews. I don’t really have anyone to talk to the show about. And I love that you get so into. It reminds me of myself as I watch the show

I totally think this is the best season. I so totally have a crush on the way Luke Newton portrayed Colin. He was very good in my opinion.

58:02 When Debling interrupts them to dance with Pen, I love how they filmed Penelope's hand accepting the dance, and it's Colin's view. It is heartbreaking. We can also hear his heart beating in this scene (a bit before Debling's interruption).
I love Luke as Colin. Of course, Nicola as Penelope is absolutely perfect, but Luke has also done a great job in my opinion. I love this couple ❤

Luke Newton gorgeous acting choices, subtleties, facial expressions and body language as Colin Bridgerton (Season 3 specifically) is reminding me of similarities to Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon in (1995) Sense and Sensibility, and Rupert Penry-Jones as Captain Wentworth in (2007) Persuasion. You do not need super obvious, over expressive and animated acting to get the character development and romantic feelings across to the viewer. Like you said, Colin's eyes alone says everything that needs to be said.
I adore rewatching an actor’s performance, and over time revealing through every watch a new quality, beat or moment I may have not noticed or caught onto before. That truly is the beauty in the genera.

This video highlights (as many yours do) some crucial differences between writers and "ordinary" audience members. We writers presumed the dreamer at the top was Colin. Others expected it to be Penn. Likewise writers figure the context of everything--i.e. the Bridgerton and Featherington families, the ton, etc.--are a necessary part of the story NOT a distraction of Polin scenes. But Eloise and Francesca and their mother as well as the brothers all have vital parts to play. Ditto Penn's sisters and mother. Just as we need to see someone else woo Penelope, and see who Colin is trying to be right now.
It is gloriously consistent that Colin's insecurities (which have helped develop his virtues btw) show up everywhere. And the more one recognizes them, the more understandable every word out of his mouth. Plus, the more my heart breaks for him. Because with recognizing his desire comes HOPE and hope naturally brings with it TERROR.
19:15 And now the fifth commercial break has interrupted your lovely essay. Fuck.
I find it sad that some folks cannot read subtlety at all, no matter how much you linger on someone's face, and how powerful their intentions might be. Some people think acting consists of "mugging" i.e. exaggerated facial expressions worthy of farce or sitcoms or melodramas. In fact acting consists of pretending with the intensity of a child but the discipline of an adult, then allowing things to happen. While an actor may well insert a twitch or something of the kind, it is usually something that just happens. Real skill consists of allowing/making it happen again.
Bit of a mini-rant. Tehre is a classical arrangement of characters into the Victim, the Oppressor, and the Rescuer. An excellent rule of thumb is that if characters maintain these roles throughout, you are watching or reading melodrama. If the characters change roles--i.e. if each character plays each role sooner or later to each other--then that is drama. Hence I maintain BRIDGERTON is a drama, no matter how wildly romantic or romanticized. But...some folks don't like drama. They want melodrama (and they usually think that is more "realistic").

I agree that Colin, during the pastry scene was down bad crying at the gym, but I think he didn’t actually buy the pastry. I want to believe that it was actually Penelope who bought the pastry and then gave it to him and somewhere in the editing. It just got lost, but it would have made so much more sense From a screenplay point of view to have pen, handing out the pastry to Colin and saying something like: here I wanted to thank you for all your kindness again and I know that you’re always hungry, like book Colin hungry boy reference (i live for that sh-). I don’t know something like that and then watching him eating the sweet she was licking off her fingers, it would’ve made so much more sense dramatically or would’ve been a better dramatic choice. I put way too much thought into this scene 😂
