  • Industrial design talk | product design analysis | Pulp storage by Midori
I thought it would be helpful to make a video that looks at all the different aspects that relate to the design of one product, call it an industrial design talk or product analysis of sorts.
In this video, we are looking at Pulp Storage pencil case by Midori.
The simple act of looking at a product and asking why it has been designed this way can produce a lot of valuable information. Whether you are a student of design or a seasoned designer, every time we look at and question a product design, there are things to be learned. In this video, we will look closely at functionality, parts, form, materials, appearance and overall quality.
If you find this video helpful and want to see more videos like this, let me know by liking this video or leaving a comment.

Hey Morna, I loved this video thank you! Please do more such product analyses, especially of products in/of daily use, it is very exciting to know/understand how good design and even design education is embedded in objects that are all around us.

Hi there, you are welcome! Great to hear you enjoyed the video. Yes, exactly - every product we encounter is like looking into the mind of other designers. Products in themselves are gold mines of information and knowledge. I'm working on a video about a food grater. Should be out in the next week or so. Cheers!

Hi Morna, I am kevin, professional industrial designer, I just found you with your channel. Since I have not found any industrial design "professionals focused" channel other than sketching tutorials or learning software, I would like your channel to focus on showing your perspective of industrial design and product development at a professional level for design professionals and not just for students . There is plenty of basic information, and vlogs for design students.
I think many of you can find greater value in your knowledge knowing that you have worked for so many years in an industrial design consultancy if the content is focused on sharing that knowledge for professionals who already know about design. In my case I am a professional but I always found very valuable to learn from designers with more experience than me.
is just my point, a suggestion i hope i was clear otherwise thank's a lot for the content!

Hi Kevin, nice to meet you. Thanks so much for taking the time to write with suggestions. I feel like there is so much I learned "on the job" so maybe I'll focus on that. I'm hoping to make more videos once my teaching semester is over. Cheers!

Great analysis of this product. The only thing I'd love to see is if you would dig deeper into the manufacturing process and maybe even the cost to produce. Otherwise awesome job. I'm so happy I found your channel. I look forward to more ID Talk!

Thanks Devi! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
Here is a link to a video of the manufacturing process:
      ua-cam.com/video/CA9xBSb9NZI/v-deo.html
The lid and lower part of Pulp Storage is manufactured with the same process as drink carriers and egg cartons which is a moulded paper pulp.
Talking about the cost to produce is a more difficult conversation. I would need a file to get a quote to see how much the moulded parts would cost (price of tool that would mould the parts + part price).... And then source the other parts.
There are many variables to cost and it fluctuates. For example, China has a new tax on silicone parts so our silicone parts just got more expensive to make.

    Great video !
Your analysis is very interesting and complete, and the part about the softness got me thinking about Kenya Hara's work (especially his talk about Japanese perspective on design in "Shiro/White").

Thank you! .... so I'm a bit embarrassed because I have Kenya Hara's book, Designing Design, but I still have not read it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I'll look it up! :)
