Then when you consider the fact that you are skipping upgrading a card to Dig, suddenly shovel moves closer to having a net value of 0 or even a negative net value. If you imagine upgrading at campfires as "digging for a relic", and that relic ALWAYS said "upon pickup, upgrade a card of your choice," that outcome would probably be above average for a Dig, and eliminates variance. Because you are choosing to dig for a random relic over this "relic," digging will often have a weaker impact on your run than just upgrading does. In a run where you have apotheosis or lesson learned or fusion hammer, where upgrading is way less valuable or impossible, AND you are so strong that you don't need to rest, then dig becomes very strong because you don't have to choose it over another, relatively close in power level option.
