This guitar plays really well and it sounds like a 1950s blues record. He's playing straight into his Headstrong Princeton style amp. We had the volume low, so it didn't break up much. It gets a lot more dirty at stage volume and sounds frickin great.
Have you ever seen the pickup he's talking about?
Have you ever played a guitar like this?
Did you have a "Gregg" in your town? (I hope you did)

Would have loved to hear that pickup turned up a bit. I've always been in search of that 50s dirty tone. I've got an old Harmony hollowbody w/a P13 (Gibson) p/u that I sometimes run through my buddy's old Gibson steel guitar amp. Perfect sound for me!
Otis! Thank you for having one of the world's greatest guitarists on your channel. I've had the pleasure of seeing Patrick 50+ times live back when he still lived in Ohio.I actually took a sit down lesson with the man. He is a true force to behold, and a gentleman as well.
20 years ago, I was at Fur Peace with a friend (hi Leo) - we'd been wandering around Athens, looking for live music, but all the bars had college-town cover bands - there was one more at the end of the street, it looked unlikely and we were set to give up if this one was also a dud. Patrick was there with his trio. I'd never heard of him. We were blown away and that evening remains one of the most magical music moments ever - it's such a treat to discover something unexpected. Had a nice chat with him at the end of the night and bought all his merch. Thank you for featuring him. He's a gem.
Love these stories. “We need a Greg”. We’re lucky to have Otis
Yes!!!! This is what I’m looking for… someone else who loves Elmore and e Lightnin’s guitar sound. I learned a lot here! Thanks Otis
Otis, I have always envied you because you get to meet and become acquainted with so many wonderful, interesting musical people and I have wondered what the secret is to being able to do such a thing. However, these days I don’t wonder about that as much anymore.
I recently returned home to Canada after 18,000 km ( 11,250 miles, I think) of hauling a little teardrop trailer behind our Mazda CX5 all over North America and hardly ever staying in any place more than one night. I came away from that huge adventure with an entire new mindset and my main takeaway is that if one wants to encounter wonderful people and places one needs to meet them where they are and be open to having them share their wonderfulness with you. After all, they don’t know they’re wonderful, it’s all about your perception of them. And thats the beauty of it, your perception changes and better prepares you for your next encounter, which changes your perception….I hope to do it again and sustain it by gigging which will I know add another interesting layer to the experience.
How could anyone not like Patrick. Kinda reminds me of a Warner Hodges Lite. Got to see him mid 2000's, local blues fest (Wheeling). He brought it, & then some. Thank you Otis, you and Tom have the best channels on the Tube, bar none!
The guitar sounds great and Patrick nails that era of the Blues.
Great stuff Otis. Thanks!!!
This dude is unreal. Amazing singer and player.
so glad to hear from Patrick! my video of him is all over my UA-cam Channel
playing MerleFest back in the day. we couldn’t get enough.
my first house party gig was hosting Patrick in August 2010. Later, I was so stoked to see my name in the liner notes of That Old Southern Drag.
more Patrick please! wasn’t he a guitar tech for Jorma for a bit?
Cool video Otis, thanks!
So cool. My buddy Dylan Keel, luthier extraordinaire, in Athens, GA, loves old Kays, Harmonys, and other old "cheap" brands, like the one in this interview, I've never heard about, acoustic and electric. Restores them to perfection. You should check out his wonderful little shop, Classic City Vintage Guitars.
I’ve got one hanging in the background of my videos. I found it in Sainte Genevieve, MO about 13 years ago. It was in the corner of an antique shop collecting dust. Paid $100 for it and spent about $350 to get it playable. I believe it’s from late 1930’s. Someone played the hell out it. It feels like there’s something important about it when you pick it up.
Love your work Otis.
Thank you, Billy! ❤
Thank you Patrick & Otis
I just LOVE these instrument and stories behind the instrument videos! To me an instrument is worth more if it has a really cool story behind it!
Happy Saturday Otis,
As always, you bring informative content and insights into the thought processes behind the scenes that musicians have to define themselves. Much love to you ☮️
Thank you both for this interview with a guitar history; stories were the birth of music
Been following Patrick for awhile now. Very cool you're inteeviewing him! Nicely done👍
I’m so happy you have Pat on your channel. He’s such a cool and talented guy. I’ve seen him at least 5 or six times. Every time he’s come through philly , once at the basement and once at the 5 spot. Last time we were in Nashville we hit the 5 spot then hit the Guthrie show after at the underdog. Just an overall amazing night.
You know I think as much as music is about the style and substance I believe that the time you hear it is also really important. I was driving through the middle of a city listening to this and if I'm honest only half paying attention because of the traffic and then that guitar tone came over my speakers and it just cut through everything and took me to my happy place. I also absolutely love that Elmore James sound though I'm not smart enough to understand why it was different this was a very very cool video for me to watch and it hit me on the right day and the right time. Now if I can ever get a day off I'm going to have to go to Nashville on a Monday.
I could tell by looking this cat can play ..might have been the fingers lol..didn't need to hear him to know tho glad he did. Another gem brother Otis thanks
Very cool

Instrumental acoustic blues, a stellar way to welcome the dawn 🤗
Thanks Otis, that was excellent 🎶
Thanks Otis. Been watching Mckinley James vids at the Eastside Bowl for a while now and he's the real deal. Recently I picked up on The Tigerbeats and damn they're good. Really enjoyed Patrick doing Wolf's 300# of joy. He nails it and makes it the fun tune that it is.
Patrick has got it! Thanks Otis!
Very cool guitar and mods. And love the playing. always on the lookout for an old Kay to bring back to life.
If you're looking for projects, I've got a doozy for ya. : )
Coffee and Otis here in KY!
Pour me a cup, Joe! ❤
The tone and playing is just mind blowing Wow! I can honestly say my musical journey was improved by a guy named Greg. Peace, Love and good Karma to all.
Beautiful!! I bought my Old Kraftsman for $30 at Tusculum Music in Nashville around ‘90.
Great singing voice
Morning all...
Morning, Bill!
My Greg was Ashley Davis in Greenville, SC!
Patrick really digs deep and gets that sound.
Wow. I remember the Olsen Electronics catalogs from that period. Thanks
Finally.. something for us "Blues Guys!"
"Thanks Otis!"
Funny. I saw the Tiger Beats video last week and that guitar caught my eye. I was trying to figure out what it was! I love acoustic archtops…
My Greg was a Bob. Bob knew everything. Still does. Campbell's Music in York, PA. My favorite music store.
❤ah life before the internet.
I like how this cat does an air guitar celebratory gesture about when he found the purrfect instrument for him then the price is right so he does the air guitar yes gesture...with a guitar in his lap lol
Amen.
Also I have a 4 string tenor arch top made by orpheum , has a unique sound
Is this Otis' house. He seems to record in this room alot.
I would guess it would be similar to what Ry Cooder's Coodercaster neck pickup since he used a Japanese version of the DeArmond gold foil. I believe they still make a DeArmond Rhythm Chief. I am not sure how it is constructed and but it is marketed through Guild. They also sell Dynasonic repros. There are also many companies selling gold foil copies now complete with the rubberized magnets like a real DeArmond. Often in the old Harmony guitars, the pickups were worth more than the guitars. That was until the Black Keys and Dan Auerbach. I had an old Harmony H77 years ago but the top started separating and it was impossible to tune.
Jason Smee from JD MC Pherson!!
I love getting an education musically. Thanks.
Now this episode is slicker than greased owl shit!
Very cool old Git-Fiddle 🐿️😎🐿️
Early 50s wowsers.....nice
The Massillon Heartthrob!
Hey, Patrick, I'm surprised they didn't make you go live in your car before turning loose of that guitar. Great story, but you should have tried to "dicker" them down 50 bucks. Hahahaha!
Nice❤
i have an old kraftsman acoustic that I bought at auction in minnesota back in the early 90's. 50 bucks including the old canvas case. It's very odd.....almost square made of masonite. It's set up with a nut lifter for slide Hawaiian guitar. Loud as hell but sounds like crap lol. But it's cool as hell.
Otis how about a few seconds of Gregs band playing on Monday night?
good
❤ is that an Airbnb?
Ive been wondering about the setting of these last several videos too.
@ this looks like the one I stayed in last time in downtown Nashville I think sometimes they’re a motel for sure. This one just looked like that Airbnb I was in.
Saved a 53ish KAY from being a wall hanger bought it right outta the the guy’s hand when he said he was going just lag bolt it through the f hole, paid up out of principle its awesome but needed a neck like they all do
Sold via the Spegiel catalog.
I love that guitar if it could talk.i bet it has some stories
Good monsters
U had to have a cool guy named Greg lol
I have a Kay banjo
🥺
I understand the jubilation completely......its like filling a big empty hole. Thanks , ron
I'm from Akron and remember Ross Music. Wondering if Patrick Sweany was from Akron. Anyone know?
Looked him up. From Massillon nearby, home of Massillon Tigers and silent film actress, Lilian Gish.
Let's be a Greg
