My daughter, 13 attending a Comprehensive, and her friends are eager and desperate to learn about politics ( obviously from families with a strong political awareness) .They are at the moment petitioning to be taught Political Sciences in school. This is an excellent school trying it's best to pack as much extracurricular knowledge in it's lessons as possible. As a German who had Political Sciences from age 11 I pull my hair out looking at the neglect of political education in this country. Nothing complicated- basics: how to vote, how to understand and take part in local politics, different political systems etc.
I deliver short workshops for adults- again just basics. People are receptive. They enjoy learning to take part , be able to finally figure out how to simply register to vote/find party manifestos/ explore local options to have their say and ultimately take a little bit of control. No judgement, no talking down and political neutrality (hard for me but important). This is desperately needed in this country.
To finish this ridiculously long epistel, I will never forget my first "Politik" lesson. Our teacher came in and asked two questions: A. What does the word democracy mean, literally?
    B. What are the most important premises for a democracy to work ?
That is surely the bare minimum. Why is it not accessible and properly taught? Sorry *off the soapbox* .
Had to vent, better than throwing things at the TV.

I attended a comprehensive school and we were taught “citizenship’ which provided us with all this information! It’s extremely sad that that’s not being taught in schools today. Good on her, and her friends, for taking the initiative and petitioning - it’ll stand her in good stead in the real world, but a 13 year old should not have to do that!

@@dm1494 @Nick Barton This is interesting. There now seems to be no consensus in which subject politics belongs,( PSHE?, History? or Geography? ) but also insistence that lessons in Citizenship/Politics do not belong on the curriculum. This utterly baffles me. A lot of my "students" are also seeing political discourse as "too complicated", "not for them", "impossible to figure out" and are left with deep reluctance to take part in it for fear of doing something wrong. A little bit like people when it comes to STEM. Something for "clever" people.
And of course the usual belief that "all parties are the same" and "my vote doesn't matter" ( which admittedly is true in a FPTP system).
Don't get me wrong the same opinions are there in Germany and other European countries but it seems far more prevalent in Britain?

As someone with ADHD, I feel Rory really needs to stop calling people ADHD who are just arrogant narcissists. A lack of empathy is not associated with ADHD. Neither is unwillingness to listen to other points of view. They might not hear or get distracted, but that's not the same as refusing to listen!
When you talk like that, you frame my disorder as a moral failing, and frame their moral failings as a disorder. So with all due respect, I would stick to politics and give psychiatry a miss.

@@jezlawrence720 well I think it's more a cultural thing within (but not limited to) politics, where being seen as decisive and unwavering in the face of criticism is mistaken for being competent or having conviction of one's beliefs. There is no sin quite so egregious in politics as the dreaded "U-turn" - even though being able to change course based on new information or unexpected consequences should be a cornerstone of pragmatism. As a result our political system increasingly attracts and promotes ideologues, narcissists and hypocrites. Kwarteng is an ideological narcissist, Starmer, while more of a weathervane, is a hypocrite, and Truss is apparently all 3, with a side helping of being as dim as a 1 watt bulb.

The problem with Kwasi Kwarteng is that he is so intelligent, and so used to being "the smartest guy in the room", that he cant see when he might be wrong. It's not only arrogance its a false sense of intellectual superiority created by his academic record. There is a huge difference between being "book smart" and being "life, street and emotionally smart". You need all of these to be a good politician. Book smarts alone doesn't cut it.

While I dont necessarily agree with everything they are proposing, nonetheless it seems coherent and workable. In contrast, the Tory party has been drifting rightward in order to placate the ERG. IMHO, the Tory party needs to ditch them in some way and will probably have to before the party seems electable again.

Our serious weakness is that whereas the others are playing the game with a team and tactics they are familiar with, thanks to brexit we face the game with an untested and unfamiliar team and tactics. We were a massively successful EU economy for 50 years, but no more. Global britain is an untested experimental team and formation that so far looks unlikely to survive.

To clarify the terms you two were pointlessly arguing about: Intelligence is the ability to absorb, analyze and act upon information. It allows you to do things in the world. Education gives you an array of information and gives you the ability to do things. Wisdom is the ability to know what to do out of the things you could do.
Wisdom depends upon understanding context. It will not only tell you what to do but also what not to do. If we could teach it as a skill or even detect it in its native form the human race would be a lot better off but we can't. The only test for it (this comes from the Science Fiction author John Brunner: I don't know where he stole it from) is to face someone with something that has never happened anywhere in the world before and see if they know the right thing to do. It's a test that the modern generation of politicians mostly fail.
'Clever' is just too broad a term though I think I know what Alistair was meaning by it.

The tories have really doomed themselves by electing Truss, she was easily the least popular candidate of the run-up by far, but they still picked her, knowing full well no one likes her and that she'd struggle in a general election. I think there may be some truth to the theory they've given up on that front and they're just in it for themselves now until they inevitably get voted out.

I’m drawn to the conclusion that the appearance of decisiveness and the appeasement of selected special interests is enough to get people to the very top in modern politics; this can result in a horrific dereliction of duty of care for vast numbers of people in society. the levels of harm caused by the likes of Truss and Kwateng are unforgivable, this is not mere economic tinkering, people’s lives are being destroyed while they smirk, showboat and waffle. And they are likely to simply walk away from the carnage into a very well remunerated future once they have been removed from office by their equally self-seeking colleagues. The Conservatives have shown themselves to be completely untrustworthy, selfish and contemptuous. These are not the one-nation Conservatives of earlier times, they are ruthless opportunists for whom actual competence is optional.

The BOE had to intervene to stop pension funds collapsing as a result of margin calls! WTF? Why is rising rates a problem for pension funds? Pension funds are the longest of long term investors and should benefit from the moves gilts! My question is rhetorical & disingenuous of course; the reason is because pension funds every where are up to their neck in debt. Not as the creditor but as the debtor! They've been borrowing to cover up for insufficient premium coverage for a decade now at least. Early this week in London proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the entire financial system is staring into the abyss. The reason people like Summers & Krugman are so angry with Kamikaze is that he's unwittingly exposed the charade; a charade the central bankers, TBTF banks and the quantum economists can only sustain if they don't break ranks.
