As a Houston fan who watched Yao’s career unfold.... he is criminally underrated. He could score at every angle, area rebound with the best, agile and strong, and always did it with class and professionalism. Yao is my all time favorite Rocket.... it breaks my heart that I wasn’t able to see him finish his career the way he deserved. And I feel regret that I didn’t get out to the stadium more often than I did to see the guy play in real life. Man, the world moves so fast, and the things that you cherish become just memories or UA-cam highlights. Houston misses you, Yao.

I don't remember ever seeing such a skilled center as Yao: post moves, footwork, positioning, hook shots, inside scoring... Truly amazing to see how he handled his own size and used it to his advantage. I really miss Yao.

The 2008-09 season was peak Yao. I still remember him getting injured late in the semifinals against the Lakers but coming back to finish the game. He is one of my favorite players ever. We will probably never see anyone like him again.
2016-2017 is his best season

I'm a lakers fan, but if bother were healthy, they had a chance to be a better duo than shaq and kobe. Tmac could do anything kobe could but was bigger. Yao had too many threats and skills that shaq couldn't keep up with what yao could have done. But injuries are a thing and we never will truly know.

Furthermore, t-mac was nowhere the level Kobe was on the defensive end. Yao definitely had more weapons offensively, he was the better shooter. However, Yao wasn't as dominant as Shaq. Sometimes you don't need so many weapons, you just 2 or 3 very powerful ones.
He still is a top 10 center of all time. For such a big man, he had the best shooting touch, superb passing, and fundamentals.

I agree, he should be considered one of the greatest centers to play in the NBA. He had skills that most centers don't have at his height. Unfortunately injuries took it's toll on him. If he were to play in this era he would dominate the league to the point where it would be unfair. If you want to shoot 3s he would play that way, if want to play bully ball in the post game he would play that way. You can not foul him either because he has a high free throw percentage.
@@1seatac - Yao is in the HOF. And Shaq recognized only a handful of centers as being worthy: Hakeem and Yao, come to mind. Too bad injuries rob some of the would-be greats: Grant Hill, D Rose, Penny Hardaway, etc.

Yao is probably the only player from Asia so far that really lived up to the hype with great adaptation and solid skills on both end of the court. He was also a great apprentice of Hakeem as one of the few players who truly mastered the dream steps.

It is real shame that Yao retired that early, unlike most NBA stars that have the luxury to rest during off-season, Yao has to continue playing for the national team. Lack of rest made him injury prone and resulted his early retirement. Some people even argue the retirement of him and shaq caused the downfall of grit&grind era. Now Yao is the president of China's basketball, he made a decision to split the national team(both man and woman team) into Team Blue and Team Red, one to exercise young players, second to prevent his own tragedy on younger players.

Man I remember that last season. Yao was unstoppable. Great midrange jumper, amazing post moves, and he put on some muscle. Such a shame he couldn't make it a few more years. It was amazing to watch him play though.

2009 Western conference semi-finals game one: Yao has just returned from his knee injury after a collision with Kobe Bryant knocked Yao out of the game to be looked at. After an emotional locker room scene where Yao is scene trying to walk off his injury, Yao re enters the game and hits a huge shot to essentially seal a game one Rockets victory, with Doug Collins delivering his famous line after Yao hits the 18 footer: "You think this guys a competitor? Man!" Yao would miss the rest of the playoffs with another stress fracture in his foot, but that game one win really showed, me at least, that with yao healthy the Rockets beat the Lakers and go on to beat the Nuggets in West finals.
One thing that made him such awesome tall big guy was the fact that he wasn't a just 7'5 center, he was awesome all around in my opinion. I like to think he was fundamental in my opinion.
Was a pretty good mid range shooter, could shoot free throws excellent, and had a good post up game.
When healthy no one was stopping Yao and Mcgrady.
Grady and YAO DID live up to the hype. Injuries and the west was even more competitive than it is now. Spurs Suns Lakers Mavericks. You had to win over 50 games back then in the west just to be an 8th seed. Kind of close to today's era but still.

Injury killed his career, dude was so good. It wasn't only hight, he could shoot from everywhere, was incredibly agile for his size, he could defend, but more than anything he had the fundamentals, he just understood the game so well. He could pass the ball and was pretty much always at the right place, even when he wasn't his size enabled him to contest shots that other wouldn't have been able to. I wish he were able to play consistently all his career and also I wish he had better players around him than an often injured and individualistic T-mac.

Yao is really good, so big at that time, even big Shaq looks like a younger brother. What's more, he is very agile with lots of skills. He deserves to get into the fame of the hall. I worked for the pistons and it was always interesting when Houston came to town because a good part of the audience was from China or were Chinese Americans and they would hold up signs in mandarin.
"In a fantasy world where Yao never gets injure..." That's the whole thing, he could have been a lot more. Even though in his best years in the NBA, he average 20 pt + 10 rb, there only a few player that can do 20+10. Incredible shooting touch. Most of all, work ethic Yao has, I think is one of the most overlooked quality. Always the first to come to practice and last to leave, working to improve himself constantly. Too bad, his career wasn't longer, could have been one of the best centers ever.

I really liked Yao Ming. He could do it all. He was crippled by injuries and really reminded me of Arvidas Sabonis and his talents and injuries.

Yeah, but Sabonis was a real monster in Europe and injuries stopped him from being truly great in the NBA. He could do it all like Yao Ming. Shoot, post up, rebound and block. Sabonis was a terrific passer. Yao was more agile for his size and was unstoppable when healthy.

I give you credit for highlighting Yao's defensive effect. People always seemed to assume he wasn't a great defender because of his (relatively) low BPG stats and (understandable) low lateral movement speed, but he was a fantastical deterent in the paint.
Hey Andy, great video! The only thing I would add is a major reason for his injuries was his obligation to play in the offseason while other players were resting. I believe he had an obligation to play with the Chinese national team every off season which had to have taken its toll.
Because of this I genuinely consider one of the biggest "What If's"

I used to have NBA League Pass back in the day, in large part to watch Yao Ming on a regular basis. His 2006-2007 season was his pinnacle...used to watch him regularly drop 20-35 points, 10+ boards and sometimes get a ton of blocks...he was pretty much unstoppable that season, before he got hurt. I remember him dropping something like 37 points and grabbing 18 boards against the Warriors, then following that up the next game with another 35 or 36 points against the Lakers and 8 freakin' blocks...nobody could stop him. Yeah, at his absolute peak, he was *that* good. It's too bad that just a couple of weeks later, he went down with an injury and it was a sign of things to come...after that, he had a bit more success, plus a fantastic playoff series against the Jazz that went to 7 games...then the injuries really started hitting him, and it was game over for him soon after.
He was a good player humble and a great work ethic..thanks for the times Yao...

Yao Ming was really good, sadly injuries ended his Hall of Fame career early.
Yao was no doubt a kick ass center in NBA. But I love him not just because of that. He got so many injuries because our national team required him to keep training in the nba off-season and to play Olympic and all the other Asian basketball tournaments. He didn’t complained a thing. But chinese People Never really learned the science of Sport. We used our super star Yao endlessly to win some third class tournament in Asia which doesn’t even matter. But still, after Yao retired he still chooses to contribute to Chinese Basketball. He took the responsibility of being the chairman of Chinese basketball association and he improved our system so much. He divided our national team into two teams, sent them to America to play against some college teams, just to give our young players some right attitude, that we are way behind but we should still fight and there’s no shame of that. I really felt proud to have Yao as our idol.
Yao is for sure not the GOAT, but his has a different mission and in terms of that he better than MJs, LeBrons and Kobes in the heart of a Chinese.

I sat next to yao on the bench one year when he played against phoenix. My dad was playing the national anthem and i was there to support him. I sat on the bench with my aunt and uncle to my left, knowing these were not our seats and that once the players started coming out we would need to leave. Yao sits next to a 13 year old me, he looks down, i look up and he smiles and puts his hand out for knuckles and give off a deep laugh and pats me on the back. Awesome guy and an awesome memory that i get to cherish. mahalo Yao
His injuries were also due to over-use. During the summer he got to serve in the Chinese national team and never got enough break for the body, for the whole national team also counted on him for the performance. Compared to other athletes facing similar problems, i must say Yao just sacrificed himself a lot, and above all, his physical body. And his humor and EQ dealing with personal relationships with other players and officials back in China are extraordinarily superb.

When Yao Ming was mature enough and healthy in 2006 to 2008, Shark was going in his later career. I don't think Yao can defeat Shark in Shark's best years, but Yao was definitely among the best players in 2006 to 2008.

Boogie has played the same amount of time as Yao did in the NBA and has accomplished less, plus Yao would be a better player in this era of basketball. The only competition for Yao would be AD, but then again, Yao is 7’6 and could already shoot very well from mid-range and three. Just imagine if he was playing today how much he would improve that aspect of his game. And defensively, Yao was very good (as expected being so tall). Also, he ranks higher than any big man in the league today in career PER, even above greats like Kobe, KG, Dirk, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor.

I admit I only watched a few games that Yao Ming played in. The games I did watch would be him posting up, looking down at the ball like he was going to lose it, then either flail when trying to draw a foul, or get it stolen.
