    DUDE!!! This video has helped me nail exposure! I always worried if it was right just by sight and levels but this method has saved me so much exposure stress!! Thank you!!

    What are you using for a VND? I've found that the one I bought completely jacks up my focus and I definitely can't stack it with a mist filter

    Is there a video that shows how to use waveform to get the right exposure for more of a run and gun shoot, ie, NOT in a studio? Is it just basically to keep the image adjusted so the highlights are not blown out and the blacks are not crushed? Then with V-Log too... I'm just starting to use V-Log on my GH7. I like using the real time LUT with the Nicest Pan LUT but not sure what I'm doing with the waveform. I usually just eyeball it, which is not reliable I think, although I've gotten pretty good at it in Cinelike D.

    I use a false color preview lut and the wave form monitor. I also set up a preview lut that is mono for only the blue channel and it really helps you see where you might get noise in your image. Also a bit easier to judge expose on the monitor when it's mono when you're outside and have a lot of light on the monitor.

    Using the grey reference is an awesome tip, but I can't see myself using it on a run'ngun documentary set. The waveform monitor and the exposure meter are my best friend here.

    What do you mean by with grey card 42? How do u make it 42? What’s high circuit and low circuit and when do u know when to use it low or high?

    Is it normal for the s5ii to brighten exposure as your half shutter? Like the lcd becomes slightly brighter than what I exposed for and then the raw is what I actually exposed for

  • @radonmike
    @radonmike 9 місяців тому

    Hey Caleb! Thanks for the video. Regarding the Spot Meter: I understand that you get a percentage for normal color profiles and Stops for V-Log. Annoyingly when you add a LUT though in V-Log (Real Time LUTS) it will switch back to percentage. According to the manual this is by design. Have you found a way to retain Stops in REAL TIME LUT mode? It's annoying as the basis of Real Time Luts is effectively V-log, so you would've thought it retains STOPS.

    So if we are filming at a distance, for accuracy do we hold the gray card where the subject will stand or is in front of the camera okay too like so?

    If I were a new user of video in mirrorless cameras, nothing would be more likely to cause me to return to smartphone paradise than being denied exposure assist tools (including shutter angle etc). Omitting these tools guarantees the user will create technically ‘lower’ quality videos.
    Thus I think Panasonic is way ahead of the game by including advanced exposure assist tools in the company’s ‘entry level’ full frame cameras. These cameras are more likely to be purchased by newer users of ILC video. These users are also likely to benefit most by using these tools. Without them, the companies are setting their customers up to fail.
    It is no surprise smartphones are so popular: sure, they are automated, but at least they make it easy to achieve good (enough) exposure and colours 95% of the time!

    • @CalebHoover

  • @DA-lp4rh
    @DA-lp4rh Рік тому

    thanks for putting this together. I'm trying to find out if the exposure rules change or stay the same when using the burned in LUT function - as the "stops" change between using the VLOG alone vs a burned in LUT - so do you use the same "O" as a correct middle grey for LOG and for the burned in LUT?

    • @radonmike
      @radonmike 9 місяців тому

      This has to do with your specific LUT and where they have middle grey mapped (at what IRE/STOP). The "factory" LUTS (the original Panasonic ones made to convert VLOG > REC709) are mapped to retain middle grey in the same place (42%). There are LUTS however that by design will drop or raise your middle grey. I for one usually have a "0" and "-1" exposure LUTS. In my -1 exposure LUT, the middle grey will be one stop lower, requiring you to raise exposure by a stop to get it at 42%. Hope this helps

    • @radonmike
      @radonmike 9 місяців тому

      Btw - 42% = 0.0 Stops

    For stills, exposure on this camera is a nightmare, like going back to 1990. What’s the point of the OLED EVF if live view (constant preview) is so bad, just give me a mirror then… I’ve been browsing for days to find a solution, to no prevail.
    Anyway… my son can have it for his videos. 😊

    Btw - histogram shows wrong range when using VLOG. On the histogram you're "clipping" highs but in reality it's still properly exposed what vectroscope confirms. This camera has so many issues It's ridiculous.

    The best way to get perfect exposure is your eyes. Your eyes will never under or over expose something. Can have wave forms false colour or what ever else you think you need but your eyes beats them all. Using wave forms or the tools talked about in this video often leads to second guessing. A camera does not know there is window letting in light behind the subject. It just sees brightness. trusting your eyes and setting the camera to match what you see often will get you the perfect exposer.

    • @CalebHoover
      @CalebHoover  Рік тому

      your eyes must be better than mine but i agree sometimes the eye test is best in some cases

    • @orinorio1
      @orinorio1 Рік тому

      @@CalebHoover The eyes is the lens for the brain. When i match the camera to what I'm seeing its often the best exposure. Think the most important thing any creator has to do is trust themselves. I understand though that if a person is a volger then they have to set the camera up to get things right as they will not be behind the camera.
