    Can I offer some tips and hacks from the view of a j tube dependent gj enteral patient of 4 years? Please emphasize that you should NEVER pull back or aspirate a j tube. EVER.
    I wish we weren't the last 1st world country to have enfit adaption for enteral use. No fall out, push out, spray back, etc ever again since enfit screws in!
    Instead of pulling the meds into the syringe, connect it to the tube like you would by gravity, pour the cup of meds into the syringe, then take the stopper portion and reinsert it into the syringe bottom, pushing just enough to have the close system of the syringe. Disconnect the syringe, remove the air, reconnect, and then push the meds like normal. You don't have to worry about losing any dosage of the meds and the fine process of pulling every bit of meds out.

    You said at minute 1 "Of course I also can't use capsules" - I thought you just open up the capsule if it's a powder inside, such as gabapentin.

      Hi there! Capsules should not be opened unless there is an order from a practitioner.

      that is not true, capsules can be opened, but the contents are not to be crushed@@LevelUpRN and when you crush meds you should use two soufflé cups with the medicine between them and medicine should never be pushed at all, they should be allowed to flow by gravity if at all possible with only a gentle boost of the plunger if neccessary.

      The capsule is open, and the content is emptied into med cup. Providers will already have this on the order. I'm a SNF nurse, this is what we do.

    How do we give enteric meds or capsule meds then?

    • @LevelUpRN
      @LevelUpRN  2 роки тому +6

      Enteric coated medications cannot be given via a feeding tube as they cannot be crushed. Sometimes a provider will write an order for a capsule to be opened and the inside powder or pearls can be administered. Without that order, though, capsules cannot be used. Generally, the provider will order a form of the medication that is a crushable tablet or liquid. - Ellis
