Once in Minsk, Belarus I got caught by two cops drinking, smoking weed and doing gay things behind an abandoned restaruant in some park and I gave them the equivalent of $90 USD and they lest us all go. I had a similar experience with a pocketknife -- which had belonged to my father, and thus had sentimental value -- discovered in my carry-on bag at the airport. I reclaimed my bag and belongings from the security checkers, asked for directions to a postal counter, dashed out of line and returned to the concourse. Whereupon, I quickly purchased a stamped envelope, and I posted the pocketknife to my home address before returning through the security checkpoint. Some things you just don't want to relinquish so easily.

This is why I always empty my bags completely before packing. Some countries and even some US states have absurd laws. I bet they did too.
Three US citizens arrested after a new law go into effect? Who only carries a couple of rounds when they go hunting? US TSA didn't find the rounds? No! TSA would of found the bullets. They have very good machines to detect such things. It smells like the ammo was planted. There are other indicators pointing to this being a frame job.

If he was so distressed or being forced to say things/mistreated he probably would have been in a cell where others are that break the law..
