In my area, whole house fans are typically found in older homes built before 1970, when central air conditioning was a luxury more often installed in the more upper class homes even though window air conditioners in the 1950s were gaining about as much popularity as Nirvana MTV Unplugged in the 1990s 😂
R8 is the requirement in my area. Based on state energy code. Requirements could be less in your area depending on weather and how strict your state is on energy. Beyond energy though it’s important for a solid thermal break around the duct in unconditioned space to prevent condensation.
My last house had every single vent from the bathrooms and kitchen vented directly into the attic with zero ductwork. I did not leave it that way ...
