I had a senior position and a directorship became open. I had a couple people say I should apply but I knew I wouldn't be happy and didnt to want to have the responsibility of leadership at that level. I also didn't think I had the right skill set for it, my coworker did apply and got it and they were a great fit. I liked my job as it was and didnt want to change. I wanted more time for home and expected to eventually leave my position if I had a baby and that's what I did when that time came.
Mr. Peter illustrates his argument with many, many examples but we are currently able to consume information much faster. That is why this video feels so outdated, although it contains very interesting knowledge.
Very valuable info here especially his comment on “Engineers becoming supervisors” Man that hit home hard. Sounded like my former boss.

I'd say that the trap in reality is that every position has a salary ceiling, so in order to improve your financial situation you "must" get a promotion.
E.g. if you work in a factory as a mechanic no matter how good you are you can't have a big salary gap with your same-position fellow workers.
So you must go to next level...
At least this is what is the reality in my country.

Unfortunately this goes for business owners. Like the ones who cant ever keep anyone but i woild imagine there is a Peter in most of them too.
