So you can multiply the hit chance (50%) by the kill chance on hit (also 50%). This gives you a 25% chance to kill. Right? Almost! What if you crit? This complicates things a little (a lot). Because crits and non-crits have different chances to kill the enemy, we have to split up "chance to hit" into two numbers: "chance to non-crit" and "chance to crit". So we have a 22.5% chance to kill the enemy without critting. The 5% crit chance guarantees the kill, so we can now just add that to the 22.5% non-crit kill chance, to get a total kill chance of 27.5%. Hey man, I recently just dove into this game because it’s out on switch, bought it just from good word of mouth. For the first two days I was absolutely getting my ass handed to. After this video I feel I get a lot of what the game is doing so I’m surviving much longer, thanks for making 50 minutes of learning mechanics engaging.
This guide is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. It covers *just* enough to make the game a bit less daunting and let players really enjoy and understand the mechanics, without going over so much that the overwhelming and crushing atmosphere of the game is completely replaced with min/maxing very early on. I've played this game a bit so far (17 hours) but never really got to any real point of progress, despite beating my first boss last time I played it. Lately I've been thinking more on this game though, and have plans for some projects involving it, and this video seriously helped cement my confidence in what I wish to do. So thank you for that, and job well done! I was very fond of the formatting for this guide in general. The order you approached things was good and flowed naturally from one point to another, the visual editing was nice and clean, particularly with showcasing the provisions, and the equations to help viewers keep track during the combat examples was a much appreciated touch. I can tell a lot of work went into this, and I found it inspiring. So, again, nicely done!
I wish i had seen this video the first time i've played , got mad called it ,,shitty game'' went my way (about 2 years ago). Yesterday i've decided to give it another shot and it was worth it :D
OMG love how you put time stamps is the description, I knew a lot of things and I love how I can just skip around to the things I need to understand better. LIKED AND SUBBED
Awesome guide! I've already played about 10 hours of this game but just couldn't get my head wrapped around all the different concepts, so i wanted a "back to the basics" tutorial. This video clarified so many questions I had. A few days after watching I'm already completing level 3 dungeons and getting better. Thanks for taking the time to make this clear, concise and informative.
15:55 This is a bad thing to recommend to new players. Bring torches. Your party will get stressed less, the enemies will have a lesser chance to wipe the floor with you outright, just, backtrack to the treasure rooms, snuff out the torch with shift clicking on it and renew it along the way so as to not get surprised in complete darkness. Now, if you were to have quirks that negated the +stress to manageable levels or benefited from low light (night owl, lurker), torchless would be viable but even then you'd like to have the torch at around 1-25, plus some cool trinkets that benefit from low light.
One important thing that you left out is formation management. Proper positioning of your party and disturbing the enemies positioning increases the effectiveness of your party by a lot. Enemies have very weak attack when they're in the wrong position
Sir, we don't talk about Rule 3a. Rule 3a is something a Darkest Dungeon player discovers about themselves. When I realized I was a horrible person devaluing adventurers based on cost-benefit analyses was when the game really grabbed me.
I felt the same way, having to get the turnover rate of McDonald's to make $$$ was hard. I will say though some characters have really high stat numbers by nature, so can be worth even the worst locked in quirks.
This guide REALLY helped me out. After several rough RNG's in the start and horrible party-wipes I found your video and have learned a lot. Thank you for this an Keep Up the Good Work!
I bought this game for my birthday last year, but I only started playing it now, and getting my ass handed to me on a platter. After watching your video, I'm gonna give things another go-around.
Tip nr. 1. Mod the original hero models with lewd skins; Nr. 2. Mod the monster models with lewd models; Nr. 3. Change the background to lewd backgrounds; Nr. 4 Change the Hamlet NPC's skins to lewd skins; Nr. 5 Upgrade the stagecoach to 4 heroes per week and a bigger barracks if you can afford it.

I very nearly sent the game straight back after I realised how complicated it is. Watching your video really helped and changed my mind! Highly recommended if you're new to Darkest Dungeon!!
I drink beer while playing this game! I bought this game 2 days ago and I like this game a lot! It is fun and is complicated in detail as well as gameplay which makes it richly exciting to play! I
This is truly a game that makes you learn when to cut your losses and not attach such emotional value on your party members. Even with 3 of my party members becoming virtuous in the same veteran run and it going so well, I still lost my resolve 2 crusader who carried throughout the battle. But the game moves on and I had to as well. If I had to name a game where I had such great experiences, it is definitely this game.
I just picked up the Crimson Edition and man is this game unforgiving! This helps a lot, thanks. I'd also like to add that I appreciate the many edits you put in to revise or simply inform me further. You should consider doing these more often if you feel that your personality is worth sharing (imo it is) because you certainly have the knowledge.
The bank is a great investment early on btw. A few torchless runs will be enough to pay for it, and the 5% interest means that a bit of savings make low-supply torchless runs free, and as long as you save more than you spend, it snowballs exponentially. Money stops being a restriction.
I did not know you could interact with curios with certain items, I always just interact with it without using a single items, glad to know different things happens when you use items on them :) love your guide!
Wow. The amount of useful tips & context you've provided in a digestible manner within a single 50 minute video makes this the most comprehensive & thoughtful single video guide for a game I've ever seen. Well fucking done.
I watched this as a reminder as I am coming back to Darkest Dungeon after a long break (purchased the Switch version). Great spoiler free guide. Well done on going over mechanics, whilst avoiding specific strategies. A game like this is good to play and experience 'blind'. But obscure stats being explained is always a useful thing. Thanks a lot.
I got one warning - the game designers cheated the parties. Melee mobs can attack anyone from the back row...your party will all have heart attacks after entering a battle full health and torch lit, you will lose players left and right to misses from your party, and constant initiative losses every battle (you will never attack first, if you do consider yourself lucky enough to win a scratch ticket), even when you crit heal your party for 2 health - the two remaining mobs will slash that away with four hits to your one... In other words, keep a core party of 4-6 favorites and protect your core four or six, leaving all other players just meat shields...if you are losing a battle badly by unlucky rolls (always), be sure to keep that core party member alive and run away if you want to keep them (although then you will have to do a few moon party runs to make money to cure the stress you accumulated from your unlucky rolls). Always assume every encounter will consist of four to six bad guys, DONT be fooled by the early tutorial dungeon consisting of random encounter number - ALWAYS BE FOUR OR MORE. Protect the core clan, kill everyone else, grind money, grind grind grind

Thanks for the comprehensive guide, it's very insightful. I'm having fun learning it, but I can tell "Rule 16" is what's going to prevent me from really getting into this game. There's a real problem, much more so with western RPGs it seems, where "complexity", "granularity", and "nuance" are too easily confused with each other and not applied correctly to a design. I already find certain systems in DD redundant and unnecessarily complex, but having to whip out a pocket calculator every time you want to complete a single action is just bad design. When I choose an action and a target, just give me the overall chance of a certain result occurring. It could either be: 8 base dmg, 90 base acc, skill: +50% damage, -15% acc, 20% stun. Foe: 15 base def, 15 base dodge, 25% base stun resist. Foe Effect: +5% dodge, +10% stun resist. OR Your swinging strike has a 35% chance of dealing 3 damage and a 10% chance of stunning the enemy. Both of those sets of information functionally communicate the same thing. They clearly put a lot of work into this game, I'd really love to hear an explanation of why they chose to do the former rather than the latter.
Watched this after utterly failing my first attempt at this game ending up broke, stressed, alcoholic and hopeless... I now feel confident to start my second try. So... thanks!
I was doing fine. Had a big expedition running for. . . Three boxes later after starting, a guy called the collector arrives to ruin my day. Now I'm seriusly considering restarting.

I just got this game a few days ago and was talking to friends while first loading it up and asked what campaign I should pick. They said bloodmoon, (they had never played it either) and I listened to them. FML
I know this is way late, but here are some stats I gathered that hopefully everyone will find interesting/helpful. I did 4 dungeon runs apiece in each of the 4 main areas (Ruins, Warrens, Weald, Cove) and kept track of every attack on my party that had a single target only. I did not factor in any enemy attacks that had multiple targets. All 16 runs were champion level runs. Here are the results by row- Row 4: 29 attacks- 9.96 % Row 3: 56 attacks- 19.24 % Row 2: 89 attacks- 30.58 % Row 1: 117 attacks- 40.20 % I was attacked a total of 291 times, so I took an average of 18 single attacks per run. Also, I used a different party composition in all 16 runs and used every class in the game except the arbalest (I used the musketeer)
First time I played this game I gave up after 2h, because there was so much info and no tutorial. Then I came back next day with more patience, I learned all the shit from the internet and fell in love with this game
Great video. I've played this game for about 30 hours and still feel like I haven't figured it out yet. It's always good to hear someone else's take on things.
Absolutely terrific video! Brilliant. A few other things newbies should know, primarily: -Corpse Management- Most enemies leave corpses that must be dealt with. Sometimes they can be left in place to assist with targeting, but usually they need to be cleared. There's a line in the tooltip for some attacks that wasn't mentioned. The leper we saw had one with Purge, plague doctors also have a good one. A good thing to know for parties without these abilities is that crits, blight, and bleed won't leave a corpse. Scrub back to the example fight against the bandit pair - when the Size 2 bandit dies from blight it vanishes. Blight and Bleed can also be used to passively sap corpses if you lack clear abilities and/or have a better way to spend your other actions. We could also bring up -Stacking- All abilities (correct me if I'm wrong) stack for their stated durations. DoTs become multiplicatively effective when reapplied, and several of them are bundled with their respective Resist Down within the same ability. This combined with the corpse mechanic can become a game-changer when setting up targets. Again, wonderful in-depth look from someone who knows his stuff.
I really appreciate the tips in this video, I picked up the game for the first time and didn't quite understand a few things but your well laid out video really cleared up some details. Thanks for the helpful info.
Very good guide! I have 97 hours in this game and still enjoyed it. I actually was away from the game for a bit and recently came back. I was curious about your opinion on stuns. I seem to remember guides in the past strongly discouraging stuns and claiming they did not work at all in the late game. I am sure many updates have altered the prescribed strategy multiple times and wanted to ask have stuns been buffed and more viable or is this just a player's choice, topic of debate? I am gearing for my first ever champion lvl dungeon and have no stuns in my party! Should I be worried?
Thanks! Glad the guide was useful to you :) On the subject of stuns: I believe it used to be the case that enemy resistances outscaled your application chance to a much greater extent at high levels, so stuns were much less likely to work in Champion dungeons. This would have been a long time ago - before the Antiquarian update - but stuns are definitely worth using these days, all the way up to the Darkest Dungeon itself. If you're going to bring a stunner, it's worth slapping a stun trinket on them - something I should have mentioned in the guide itself. With Blasphemous Vial (additional 40% stun chance), for example, the Plague Doctor is absolutely unstoppable. Even a Stun Amulet or Dazzling Charm goes a long way toward guaranteeing that stun - and reliability is key, so it's definitely worth doing.
Thanks for the quick response! ... just tried out a stun heavy party and loved it. Still haven't pulled the trigger on champion level, though... I am scared lol.
Ah, you'll be fine :) I personally think that the very first dungeons you do, before you have any upgrades or trinkets, are some of the hardest in the game. If you can make it to Week 8 in good shape, you can make it through champ dungeons! ... don't quote me on that, though.
Mission accomplished but it wasn't pretty lol. Left my first champion level dungeon with no losses, but 3 of 4 hit deaths door about 5 times a piece... then the one guy that never hit death's door hit 100 stress and failed the resolve check.... but I'm still calling it a win!
I purchased the game a while back but could never really get into it due to feeling really lost in all the mechanics. This guide however has really made me want to learn it properly and I finally feel like I understand the game. One question though, if anyone can help me. I noticed the corpse mechanic in the game, how much of a problem is this? Or is it something I don't really need to be concerned about?
Awesome man, glad you liked the guide! The corpse mechanic is really just there to make sure you care about positioning. It's not usually worth building your party composition around clearing corpses with skills like Disorienting Blast or Purge - you'll want to hit the back lines first the majority of the time anyway, so they shouldn't be a major problem. Corpse-clearing abilities can be useful, but if you feel like you need to use them constantly it's probably indicative of other problems with your party comp. As long as you're aware that you can't just bring two Lepers and nuke down the opposing team in rank order, the corpse mechanic has done its job.
It is, I'm afraid! I normally hate micromanagement, but to be honest something about this game just makes it work - maybe the fact that nothing's limited by real time. It's not a "keep these six plates spinning" type of micromanagement, more a "oh, crap, I accidentally took a Cove Phobe to the Cove and now she's real pissed about it" style. But yeah, to answer your question - whole bunch of little stuff to keep track of, I'm, afraid. Most of it's not catastrophic to mess up, but if you're not into micromanagement it can get a little frustrating.
Yewb, thanks for the insight! Another question if you don't mind: what's the save feature ( is there one?) If a player were to have a TPW, can you at least go back to your last save? Wish there was a way to test drive this game, I'm really tempted. Seems like a type of game to play during Halloween season! I guess it's only 5 bucks risk , lol

Quick question, how did you calculate the 40-45 percent chance to kill? haha
I'm not sure exactly the part you're referring to, but here's the general process with an example.
Say your enemy has 6HP, and you have a 50% chance to hit. If you hit, you will deal 4-7 damage (each outcome evenly weighted, I believe). Your crit chance is 10% - this is the part that complicates things. All of this information is visible in the fight.

What if you crit? This complicates things a little (a lot). Because crits and non-crits have different chances to kill the enemy, we have to split up "chance to hit" into two numbers: "chance to non-crit" and "chance to crit". In this case our chance to crit is 5% overall, because our base chance is 10% but we miss half the time.
So now we have our 50% chance to miss, our 45% chance to hit, and our 5% chance to crit.
If we miss, we never kill the enemy. Obviously.
If we hit, we have a 45% * 50% chance to kill the enemy - 45% for the "attack roll", and 50% for the "damage roll". So we have a 22.5% chance to kill the enemy without critting.
The 5% crit chance guarantees the kill, so we can now just add that to the 22.5% non-crit kill chance, to get a total kill chance of 27.5%.

That's really nice to hear, thank you! :)
I second that to the highest degree. very good work!
I third that! Excellent write-up!
48mins? Dear god, it felt like five. Have a sub and a like
I'm really impressed actually because he talks so fast and gets to the point without rambling incessantly for five minutes to pad the video.
"i'll just watch a bit to get a feel for the game, but I'm not going to watch the whole 50 mins"

I wish i had seen this video the first time i've played , got mad called it ,,shitty game'' went my way (about 2 years ago). Yesterday i've decided to give it another shot and it was worth it :D
Amazing tutorial, very detailed, just getting into the game and needed something like this, thanks a lot for it, keep up the great work!
Awesome, glad you liked it and good luck to you! :)
@@YewbPlays the most amazing thing too is that it still holds up, amazing job on an introduction video it really made things simpler

I've been playing DD for about a week and learning lessons the hard way: this guide is GREAT. Thank you!
I bought this game for my birthday last year, but I only started playing it now, and getting my ass handed to me on a platter. After watching your video, I'm gonna give things another go-around.

You deserve so much more recognition for the work you put into this vid, it takes real talent to make a video 48 min long AND stay enjoyable. Not a lot of people can do what you did in this video, keep it up!! earned another sub c:

I very nearly sent the game straight back after I realised how complicated it is. Watching your video really helped and changed my mind! Highly recommended if you're new to Darkest Dungeon!!
I gotta recommend drunk mode for this video (0.75x speed) - I'm just a fast talker and a little excitable, sorry!
I drink beer while playing this game! I bought this game 2 days ago and I like this game a lot! It is fun and is complicated in detail as well as gameplay which makes it richly exciting to play! I

Thanks, just started the game and this was very helpfull
This is truly a game that makes you learn when to cut your losses and not attach such emotional value on your party members. Even with 3 of my party members becoming virtuous in the same veteran run and it going so well, I still lost my resolve 2 crusader who carried throughout the battle. But the game moves on and I had to as well.
If I had to name a game where I had such great experiences, it is definitely this game.
Couple days into 2023 and picking up Darkest Dungeon, still the best new player guide I could find 5 1/2 years on. Great content Yewb!
Thanks, that's great to hear! I'd love to do more guides like this, but I just don't have the time at the moment - maybe in the future, though :)
Protect the core clan, kill everyone else, grind money, grind grind grind

haha this was a great gone, i loved the game
It could either be:
8 base dmg, 90 base acc, skill: +50% damage, -15% acc, 20% stun. Foe: 15 base def, 15 base dodge, 25% base stun resist. Foe Effect: +5% dodge, +10% stun resist.
OR
Your swinging strike has a 35% chance of dealing 3 damage and a 10% chance of stunning the enemy.
So... thanks!

Exactly what I needed. The game is pretty overwhelming and this breaks everything down perfectly. Thanks!
Man i was looking for a good rpg yesterday. I been getting the rpg fever lately. Honestly always think i dont like turn based combat but i find myself actually loving it. There so much more u can do with turned base its alot deeper system and i realize that now. But i am in love with darkest dungeon right now just hope the grind dont get boring fast but im sure there alot to learn about all the classes, skills etc that will keep me busy
I've found that DD doesn't let you just sit back and grind, which makes sure the game doesn't get boring. I love this game
If it's not turned based, it's not a real RPG. This game is very addicting, stressful but I'm loving it!
I myself don't like turned base games as well, but this i absolutely love it.
just got this game today and I already feel ready to play it, reason why I watched instead of actually playing it is that I'm at work :D one of the best tips video I've seen, thank you so much
I just got this game a few days ago and was talking to friends while first loading it up and asked what campaign I should pick. They said bloodmoon, (they had never played it either) and I listened to them. FML
Thanks man. I got the game on sale a few days ago. Already figured out most of the basics but there are some really useful tips in this video.
Great vid, just picked up the game yesterday, wish me luck :P
Thanks! :) It's a frustrating game sometimes, but well worth it IMHO. Best of luck!
Here are the results by row-
Row 4: 29 attacks- 9.96 %
Row 3: 56 attacks- 19.24 %
Row 2: 89 attacks- 30.58 %
Row 1: 117 attacks- 40.20 %
I was attacked a total of 291 times, so I took an average of 18 single attacks per run. Also, I used a different party composition in all 16 runs and used every class in the game except the arbalest (I used the musketeer)
First time I played this game I gave up after 2h, because there was so much info and no tutorial. Then I came back next day with more patience, I learned all the shit from the internet and fell in love with this game
This game is certainly one of a kind
Great video. I've played this game for about 30 hours and still feel like I haven't figured it out yet. It's always good to hear someone else's take on things.
Oh my god this guide is so good and helpful, thank you very much!
Absolutely terrific video! Brilliant.
A few other things newbies should know, primarily:
-Corpse Management-
Most enemies leave corpses that must be dealt with.
We could also bring up
-Stacking-
All abilities (correct me if I'm wrong) stack for their stated durations. DoTs become multiplicatively effective when reapplied, and several of them are bundled with their respective Resist Down within the same ability.
This combined with the corpse mechanic can become a game-changer when setting up targets.
Again, wonderful in-depth look from someone who knows his stuff.
Great job on the review. Subbed. You clearly know your stuff on this game.
I really appreciate the tips in this video, I picked up the game for the first time and didn't quite understand a few things but your well laid out video really cleared up some details.
Thanks for the helpful info.
Greetings from 2019, great guide.
pathetic.
Man 3 years later this guide is still helpful. Loved it so much. Thanks..
Thanks! Glad the guide was useful to you :)
On the subject of stuns: I believe it used to be the case that enemy resistances outscaled your application chance to a much greater extent at high levels, so stuns were much less likely to work in Champion dungeons.
Hey man, a win's a win! Congrats!
Thanks for the guide. You've got a good voice and delivery for this sort of thing.

Thank you! I just started playing and i was lost on a few things. This is the most comprehensive guide ive seen out there. You're doin the lords work
I purchased the game a while back but could never really get into it due to feeling really lost in all the mechanics.
Thank you so much for the guide. New to the game and it does very little to show you the ropes. Appreciate the time you took to make this.

This was invaluable to me going into this game. All of your information is succinct, well organized, and engaging!
I’m on the fence in checking this game out. Love the aesthetic and atmosphere - just seems like this game could be heavy on the micro management 😬

A few hours in to darkest dungeon and my biggest complaint: Why doesn’t the game tell you all this?
Game developers seem to think the discovery of mechanics is part of the 'fun'.
@@silvergreylion More like a vocal minority of players think it's fun. They bitch about games that have tutorials because "tHaT'S nOT hOw mY NiNTEnDY gAEmeS wERe LiKe 20 YeArS aGO"
Because it's actually better when a game doesn't hold your hand. This ain't Skyrim, giving you everything you need to know on a silver platter, this is Darkest Dungeon, and if that bothers you, be thankful it ain't Dwarf Fortress.
Death Incarnate that’s cool in some games but DD leaves out critical info that could make the game a lot more enjoyable
