  • Gisèle Pelicot waived her right to anonymity when her husband - and dozens of other men - were charged with raping and sexually assaulting her. Her decision allowed journalists to cover the trial in full and made her a feminist icon in France. But as we await the final verdicts and sentencing, what does the case tell us about French attitudes to rape? And with the French government promising change, will this be a watershed moment?
The episode contains discussion of rape and sexual assault.

As a man and a father I am truly shocked by what her husband and countless men did to her. She’s a very brave woman who deserves respect and admiration for standing up against the brutal crimes inflicted on her. I hope all those men get lengthy sentences. Theres still another thirty unidentified and one’s on the run, but the police are still looking for them and hopefully they’re all found and brought to justice.

I believe her , I’m with this lady, my husband , my high school sweetheart, no one else before him we were married in 1971 I was 19 years old, we had no children, he did the same thing to me back in 1978 when I was 26 years old, he claimed “because he wanted to “ thank God it only happened 1 time, I stay quiet for his family sake he didn’t want them to know they were very Catholic and good conservative family , I loved them very much to hurt them by telling them about their son, that’s why I didn’t brought him to court , i separated from him immediately and I did divorced him in 1979!
This damaged me tremendously and the trust in another men was gone for ever, I’m now 73 years old, believe me it still hurts !

    • @katella

"people who committed these heinous acts"? Are you afraid to say 'the men'? That is avoid the main aspect of what occurred. I understand that many women are hesitant to call out men for their "heinous" behaviour. We can be threatened, ostracized, silenced or accused of being a manhater. But it is important to say the truth of what men who hate women can and want to do to women. It is a first step to holding men responsible for their crimes and to understanding why and how this hatred and desire to harm and humiliate comes to be. It is difficult to understand how a man can appear absolutely normal and yet act out these horrible crimes against women. We must keep this in mind.

Wow that male nurse is a real piece of work. When caught in the act of r*pe, he redefines the meaning of the word and redefines the r*pist as the victim and the actual victim as the perpetrator. Just revealing the typical mindset of every r*pist. God knows what repulsive acts he's subjected female patients to over the years. Even his "explanation" to "prove" his innocence, that it was supposedly sold to him as a game, betrays his inner r*pist, in that he didn’t even think he needed her consent, from her, just supposedly took the other man's word for it. Wow. Just wow. And he was a nurse. This case has made me even less trusting of men in professional (or maybe any) settings.

She has had to sell her home and most of her possessions. She left with 2 suitcases of clothes/possessions at age 72! I hope that France has social security and her pension- penniless! What is terriable is that we will think of her as a victim not what a wonderful wife and mother she is- she made a family! She was a well respected Logistics engineer. I hope you are wrong that we will think of her as a victim.
In fact, I don't. I see her as a warrior and inspirational. Her courage and dignity is off the scale. Having finally pieced together what had been happening to her (including inexplicable bouts of venereal disease!), she rose above the humiliation and betrayal, and exposed herself all over again to bring these maggots to justice, and to pave the way for new laws to prevent this kind of unthinkable behaviour and change society's attitudes towards women and the men who disrespect us.
The fact that her husband was not only perverted enough to want to do this, but knew he had a ready market in other men who would conspire to join in and protect each other, is an indictment of the unacknowledged misogyny that underpins society, even today.
She is not a victim, she is a hero!

How can this not be a capital crime? What has been taken from Mdme Pelicot - her autonomy, her sense of safety and dignity, her right to consent - can never be returned to her. There is no possible restitution. She conveyed to her husband and to her husband alone the right to intimacy, in exchange for the right to his protection. From his enjoying, filming, and relishing her repeated degradation, her being infected, her being treated as a human trash can, it is clear that her husband has seethed with hatred for her for over a decade. She has lived with a monster. I would not pay for him to live in prison for a single day. Only capital punishment seems to fit the crime.

I cannot believe that most of the men are not pleading guilty. For example the ‘nurse’ how can he be a nurse and be so self centred. He was apparently in a relationship, why was he having sex with someone else if he’s in a relationship where you’re applying together to adapt a child. He clearly is not suitable to be a nurse or a parent if he cannot see that he is not a victim here. He penetrated someone who he thought was pretending to be sleeping. Are you so out of control of your sexual urges that you cannot put two and two together and think something is not right. Then when all the evidence is put before you, you still cannot take responsibility.
This case illustrate that something is very very wrong with our society. We have to learn again what consent is. We have to learn how to take responsibility of our actions. We need to treat other how we would like to be treated, just to name a few. The whole thing is very very disturbing.
