A few more comments from a long time cowboy action shooter. They forgot to mention only lead bullets are used, no jacketed or gas checks allowed. Lead bullets flatten and shatter on the steel targets and will not ricochet like jacketed bullet can. However, small fragments of lead can bounce back to firing line and the observers behind the firing line so eye protection as well as ear protection is required. Most shooters use some sort of in-the-ear protection as the earmuff style protectors do not work with cowboy hats and can interfere with rifle stock for some shooters. Duelist is a category and double duelist is a different style for same category. For double duelist you cannot have two loaded revolvers out of holster at the same time. You draw first pistol and shoot one handed and then without reholstering draw the second pistol in other hand and shoot then holster both pistols. Gunfighter category may have two loaded pistols in hand (5 rounds each). For clarification, rifle and pistol misses can not be made up, a miss is a miss. Shotgun target misses may be re-engaged with another shot to avoid a miss. The transition from weapon to weapon and shotgun reloading on the clock is a key element in lower overall stage times. More so than superfast triggering of weapons. Cowboy action shooting is not reenacting per say. Cowboy hat, long sleeve shirt and boots are minimum recommended. It definitely looks like it’s a lot easier with the rifle! I finally got my other 357 revolver in last week and tried shooting both revolvers at the same time, I did OK but my shots from my left hand were not nearly as accurate as the shots from my right. I can definitely relate to what you are saying about shooting with both hands. Either way, I really appreciate these videos since you and I are both at the same point in regards to getting involved in cowboy action shooting and it sounds like we have equally curious wives!😂
Good video for a brief overview. I would suggest downloading the rule book from SASS and reading it before purchasing anything. Some firearms are not allowed in certain categories. Certain categories require a very specific dress.
Counting your shots...counts (clearly I'm a jeen-yus 😮). Something tells me you're going to do very well after some practice, mentoring, & experience. I read that some CAS groups are very nit picky about the type of boots you're required to wear (???).

If you don’t have a large disposable income as I didn’t it takes a while to get all the gear. The other thing no one mentions that you could touch on is reloading. If you don’t reload your own ammo it’s not really economical, and factory cowboy loads are hard to come by. Good luck in your path into this sport. The people are great and it’s a blast.

You do not have to remove the manufacturers’ label removed from jeans. Here’s what the rule prohibits: The displaying of any manufacturer’s, sponsor’s, or team logos on apparel. (Manufacturer’s labels on such apparel or equipment are acceptable)
There are three different “shooting styles” with the revolvers. Your category governs which style is legal. “Gunfighter” (not “Outlaw”) is the style in which you shoot five rounds with the right hand, six with the left.
Some clarification There are four “styles” of shooting revolvers in SASS. 1) Traditional - one revolver at a time held with two hands. Can be drawn double strong side or cross draw. 2) Duelist - shooting one revolver at a time with either the right or left hand, one handed. May be drawn either double strong side or crossdraw. 3) Double Duelist - one revolver shot at a time with both the right and left hands. Usually drawn double strong side. 4) Gunfighter - both revolvers shot at the same time, one in each hand. ALL SASS revolvers are loaded with five rounds. The only time a sixth round is loaded is during the scenario. Outlaw is shooting gunfighter style with the revolvers held below shoulder height - no “aiming” allowed.
Were at in ohio, are you shooting. I have tried on line and all that comes up is either video or matches out on Montana or something like that. I am near Steuvenville, ohio.
I have been shooting this for years, and some of the information is not correct, the guns and rifles are category specific. The type of gun handling is also category spacific.
Don’t wrap your thumb every shot on the rifle. That will reduce time on the rifle. Practice accuracy and time will follow. And this is from a guy who is only been doing this for 10 months. It’s the best fun you can have with your clothes on.
