I have never heard this before. Yes she died. God gave him a son and took his wife. Not gonna be a favorite. Love his voice. It always reminded me of Hank Thompson's.
Cal Smith has quite a few great songs. MacArthur's hand, the Lord knows I'm drinking, country bumpkin. I loved your face when you were listening to him tell the story.
Yeah Don, what he was saying was that the lord blessed him and Mary, with a child but in doing so he Mary , so yes she did "DIE" and the he the farm go back the way it was nothing on it!! Hey Don, I would like to request a song by Toby Keith, called "IN THE TRAILERHOOD" A VERY FUNNY SONG! THANKS
In all my years of listening to country music, I have heard of Jason's Farm, but never heard the song. Country Bumpkin and The Lord Knows I'm Drinking are two that I definitely remember. When I heard the lyrics about God exchanging one life for another, I knew his wife had died. When I ask people if they like country music, they usually say the songs are too sad. Guess they heard this one.
Hadn't heard this in a long time Cal had a beautiful voice , really sad song ,( I think she died at childbirth and Jason couldn't take it without his wife blamed the baby and God ). thanks for playing. Take care Don
I think Mary died in childbirth - Cal Smith has other great songs like Country Bumpkin & Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'! Also have another good one for you if you have time called - Yes, Mr. Peter's sang by Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell👍
She died. I have never heard someone say of a woman who just deserted her family "the Lord taketh away". That is only said of someone who died. I am very well acquainted with Country Bumpkin by Cal Smith but this is the very first time I've ever heard Jason's Farm so this is MY reaction (not that anyone cares) but I have to wonder, what happened to the baby? I liked the people in Country Bumpkin but I must admit that if Jason left his son behind when he went "roamin" (and it is strongly implied that this is exactly what he did) I don't much like him. The baby lost his mother. Why would he make him lose his father too? You may have noticed that I take these songs seriously! Yeah, I don't much care for Jason.
No Don, the Lord Wouldn"t be referenced if the wife had run off. Mary died in childbirth and Jason couldn"t cope with the loss, which is why he "shunned his child And cursed his God"
hmm, I got that she died giving childbirth and he blamed the kid for her death and shunned the kid and blamed God for it, so he in the end lost everything - his wife, his kid, and his faith.
One of Cal Smith's songs that brings me back to my childhood is "Country Bumpkin".
A singer I have never heard of. Nice voice.
Nice ❤️ I like the songs that are often reacted on this channel
Country Bumpkin was my old man's favorite.
"Lord Knows I'm Drinking", "Country Bumkin" are two of his better known songs.
Very good song
She passed away from child birth. Sad song. Dave G good pick. Oldie but goodie.
A fantastic singer, great voice, like already mentioned Lord Knows I'm Drinking, Country Bumpkin also Time To Pay The Fiddler well worth listening to.

There are a few Cal smith hits that you need to listen to. “Country Bumpkin,” “Lord Knows I’m Drinking,” and “I Just Came Home to Count the Memories.”
cool song, new to me too. and i do like the title! LOL
Like his music along with other artists such as Don Williams etc
All I remember of this song is that my sister and my mom loved this new Pekingese and named him Jason because of this song
Cal Smith was also married to June Carter Cash from 1952 to 1956
Cal Smith was one of Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours. He sings Lonesome 7-7203 on Tubb’s live album, which can be found online.

Mary died , he shunned the child. He cursed God. He left and roams ,broken unmended.
The music gives you a hint that something bads coming. Country does that alot. Not always.

Cal Smith had a limited singing range but he was an expressive singer like Johnny Cash, and he picked some really killer material.

The song - Country Bump kin ,

"God gave Jason a son, an extension of his life. And in doing so, he traded the child for Jason's wife." His wife died in childbirth.

There’s a great bluegrass version of this by James King. It’s the first version I ever heard of it and then heard this later on.
Love the old songs Don, even though this one is real heartbreaker. Keep up the good work
