Great song and spot on. It also resenates so true to me. It really makes you stop and think about how many people out there do the opposite of what they stand for or say they do. Cal did a great job with this one. He is amongst those with a great story telling voice . Thanks for the request Jeff I hadn't heard it since like the 80's
The origin of the song is Bill Anderson and his wife had been to church and had gone across the street, I think for lunch, as they were drinking a glass of wine when some of the church members came in and Bill asked his wife if they hide their wine she said Why the Lord knows we're drinking.
That blew some cobwebs out of my mind --- 1972 (had to look it up). What a terrific song, and a great statement about those folks we all know. Thanks Jeff for a super request and thanks Don for another sterling reaction!
Heard this song so often when I was a kid and every so often now on the internet . Never stopped to really think about the songs words . All the talk about the words reminds me of this lady who used to snoop on everyone and tell us what she saw heard. Like this one lady brought a bottle of booze into her house "she has a drinking problem" She heard something from my place one day and told me about it and what my problem was . All these assumptions from being so snoppy . A true Christian doesn't say anything just pray .Don't make assumptions and love on people . Also realize that they have issues themselves.
Hey, I know Ms. Johnson! And I doubt I'd have been as PC as he was...Hahaha! Doesn't the Bible say men and women are to go forth and procreate (and you have to meet a woman/man first! ) and didn't Jesus drink wine? I love me some hypocrites (NOT) and that's what made me leave organized religion but not spirituality. I loved this song! Put a smile on my face and had me toe-tappin'! Go ahead and give it to me with both barrels...I'm old (but respectful) enough to speak my mind these days, especially to the Ms. Johnson's of the world. I agree, the choir backed her up! This one hit my funny bone. Thanks Jeff and Don!
Another big hit written by Bill Anderson. Funny story. Bill and his wife were out to eat having wine with they're supper. They're preacher walked in. Bill asked his wife if they should hide the wine with the menu. She said the lord knows we're drinkin
as a southern Baptist i love this song raise hell friday night and repent and ask for forgiveness on sunday after all even Christ turned water to wine so i think God wants us to be happy just not too happy
Bill Anderson wrote this song after an evening out with his then-wife, when they were in a restaurant enjoying a glass of wine with dinner and one or more church people showed up - Bill says his first reaction was to hide the glass behind his menu, but his wife said "The Lord knows I'm drinkin'" and Bill took that sentiment and wrote the song.
always thought this would have one of those "answer songs" written for it from the other person's perspective, like they did with a lot of other songs. most famously with "the wild side of life/it wasn't god who made honky tonk angels"
This brings to mind a fine Merle Haggard ditty, "Make Up and Faded Blue Jeans". I was a very avid Merle fan for 30 years before I heard it, should have been much bigger hit.
Another comment concerning Bill Anderson, I've noticed that some of your reactions are from Bill's 50th Anniversary, I'm not sure if you're aware that all the songs on that site are songs that he wrote (a few he co-wrote). Such a a talented man.

I love the smile this is putting on your face.
Have loved this song and his song Country Bumpkin for years.
Man blow my mind. I forgot about this song

Thanks for this reaction. A cute one.
This was always a good song to get the table swaying and holding up their drinks.

I know one more really good one from cal smith. “I just came to count the memories”

Another oldie that I have not heard in a long time. So much wrong actions by all in that one. Good reaction!
I have always liked songs that are a little rebellious. This is one. Midnight Choir by the Gatlin Brothers is another. Sun Comin' Up by Nat Stucky.
Great Song. You should listen the The Boxmasters version. There’s a couple of changes in the lyrics.
Can't believe I missed this until now!
Thank you, Cal was a treasure!
Hey Don, the song was written by Bill Anderson, cal did a great job on it

Hey Don that is a golden oldie and a great one 2
It's got an oompa oompa polka sound.

was you praying for them ? lol.. love your reviews..and yes Loretta would have done an amazing job on this song.
I don't think she was drinking, she was just visiting him. Just trying to get him back on the straight and narrow.

Cal get his start as a band member/back ground singer for with Earnest Tubb.
Bill Anderson wrote the song.
The background vocals are pretty typical of the 50s and 60s Nashville sound.
Right off, that's not the original recording :D
Can you please wait until the song is done before you say anything?
