The Jain monks coveted a huge stone-like vault! No one still knows what is in it or how to get into that giant room. Yes, not even a door was built to open that vault. But the locals say that if the puzzle sculpture made by carving a snake in the stone pillar of the yard, the way to the cellar will be opened. A nagakettu carved on one of the pillars at the Jain temple in Sultan Bathery. Nagakettu refers to the representation of an intertwined knot of snakes. Dating back to the 13th century, the temple is said to have been built in the prevalent architectural style of the then reigning Vijayanagar dynasty. One realizes the sanctity and vivacious past of this temple by its grandeur and mystique.
