I was raised on Carter family records. My dad grew up with them and loved them. At dad's funeral we played his favorite Carter tune .... "Keep On The Sunny Side". That's what dad did ... he kept on the sunny side of life. Thank you, Dad.
I should edit my typing Treasure Treasure. AP played at a studio and would not accept the money, he only wanted to sell his pamphlets. He thought he had been forgotten but with him joining in with Maybelle and daughters the station was flooded with mail for HIM! God Bless AP - he gave away everything he ever owned and he is beloved in the Valley where he was born and died.
So glad I get to learn about them. People of that generation, anywhere in the world were strong people and Theydon't take anything for granted and they face anything that got thrown at them and solved the problem. I am 72 and have lived through all kinds of disasters but compare to them I still feel they were much stronger.
I would like to thank you very much. I am very thrilled to hear AP in 1953. I did not know that it even existed and I really thought I had every pressing The Carter Family made. I recognized the tremble in AP's voice. I talked to people in Poor Valley just a week ago and learned more than I thought I would. His daughter wrote a few books and she gives a very good commentary on their life in Poor Valley. Thanks again, it is a treason. AP carries the day again.
This take me back to when i was a boy i would stay 2 weeks at my great grandmother and great aunt's. in hugo Oklahoma. I was so loved by 2 of the greatest women ever in my life .thanks for posting this music it brought me back in time g-ma past in 1988 aunt 91 yet i feel them with every old song like these
I would also like to chime in with my notion of the IRONY that, although we now have the technology to record every moment of all the musical performances we witness, you've really gotta seach for anything WORTH preserving...!! Carter Family FOREVER...!!
Robert, Thanks so much for sharing this with us. A little story for you Robert. When I was a young boy back in the mid 50s, Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters came to perform at a High School Gym near my home in the Missouri Ozarks. My ticket to get in to that show was .25 (twenty-five cents)! I can still see Maybelle holding that big guitar up to the mic and just picking the fire out of it, and the crowd simply went wild! I'll never forget it. FIVE STARS on this one Robert!
Robert, Thanks so very much for sending this one to me. I have listened to them ever since I was a kid. They were the greatest. 5 *****. God bless you and the pics were heavenly also. Darlene
Y'all probably know this but Maybelle and Sarah sang together on some TV country shows probably as late as the 1960's or even 70's, there are youtube vids.
@mh605 A.P. is buried in a little family cemetery near the Copper Creek "bends" in Scott County, VA. It is on the north side of the Clinch Mountains. Out of Gate City, VA take highway 71 NE towards Nickelsville. About 6mi from Gate City, turn left onto a road at Snowflake. It would be best to stop at one of the small country stores along the road and ask some of the local residents precise directions, as you will be driving on dirt roads. The area remains much the same as in AP's time.
The photo at the beginning of this video shows Sara Carter with her 3 children (left to right: Janette, Sara, Joe and Gladys) at the Carter Fold in Hiltons, Va.
amazing .a p carters old store is still there in virginia .he spent his time there after he left maybell.its like a time capsule.old bottles.rusted tin cans.just like he left them 70 yrs ago
06June53 in Meridian, Mississippi, at a Jimmie Rogers memorial. The original tape indicates, per the MCs intro and his salutation at the end, that these were the only songs they played that day.
My Mom and Dad just came back from visiting the Crooked Rd and the old Carter family homestead. The stories they shared with me about what they learned was truly awesome and my Dad even got to sit in Johnny Cash's rocking chair.. GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thank You....
If this is in fact the last recording of the "Original Carter Family" then the song "Anchored in Love" is appropriate. I just wish there was a TIME MACHINE that could drop me in the front row because six minutes and forty seconds does not do justice. The footprint of these souls is everlasting, yet borders on forgotten. Sad reality. Oh Where is my Time Machine? Maybe my kids can be in the front row some day, via Time Machine, and see the Robins Egg Blue dress June and her family wore that day.
we are so lucky to have this stuff because in those days microphones and recording equipment wasn''t great maybe someone will re master some of the old videos that are not too flash
Phantom -- thanks for that answer. I really appreciate it. I wonder if, buried in a can somewhere, some footage that Peer kept out of sight is waiting to be discovered? I haven't even seen the footage of him at the store either, but I did meet his granddaughter when I drove through Maces Springs once...
According to an old PBS documentary on the Carter Family, it clearly stated that Sara was adopted. I had just finished watching it before I came here and started posting.
mysteryjesus Sara and Maybelle really were cousins - their respective mothers were sisters. Sara was adopted out to another couple in the family when her mother died and the father could not care for the kids (it seems he was a nice guy but a drifter).
This is Alvin Pleasant Delaney "Doc" Carter, Sara Dougherty Carter Bayes and two of their three children, Janette Carter on guitar & vocals and Joe Carter on bass. It isn't genuinely the original Carter family since Maybelle isn't here. After 1943, Maybelle and her daughters appeared and recorded as The Carter Family and had their own touring schedule. This is one of several attempts A.P. made to restart the group, despite the fact that he and Sara divorced in 1937 and she remarried in 1939.
About a half a mile up the road. A white Church up on the side hill. Ap is buried about a hundered feet from Sara . They both have the same kind of head stone. Too bad they are not side by side.
jdylan oh, is that what happened? it Seemed like Sara took a lot of heat for that. For a minute I almost lost some respect for her but didn't, couldn't.... because there had to be more to the story. I haven't come across any thorough documentaries. I'm still searching though. 🌼
elvis4all I know this response is 7 years late but, there is footage of the Carters together at this event though not preforming. Hank Snow did in fact video tape this recording here but the film was unfortunately destroyed in storage.
Mary didn't want Coy with Sara since they had an affair and she left AP. Coy's family tried to keep them apart and it wasn't until years later that they got together. Sara also didn't like the spotlight. Otherwise you might have known more about it.
Maybelle und Sarah waren cousins. Sie haben auch Vettern, AP und Ezra verheiratet. Nachdem Sarah und AP geschieden, heiratete Sarah AP anderen cousin, Coy Bayes.
I knew Coy Baye's mother, Mary when I was a kid. We called her Nena. Coy was A.P.'s cousin. Coy and Sarah Carter were married after she and AP divorced. I wish I had known at the time who Nena really was. I would have asked her so very many questions. My parent’s best friend was Barbara Powell, Nena’s granddaughter. Her mom, Elva, was Coy's sister. Odd. I knew the names, Uncle Coy and Aunt Sarah, but I never knew who they were! What a bummer! So much info I could have gotten!
Sarah Doghrtey Carter, Bays and Maybelle Addington Carter were 1st Cousins! They Married Brothers AP and Ezra Carter. After the Divorce Sarah Married Coy Bays, Carters Mothers neph. .

Some people think I spend too much of my life studying the past but the time I've used to learn about The Carters was a lesson in character building.
Me, too!
If you've ever wondered what the mountain people played for music in the 1800s, this is it! Authentic and genuine.
I am still a Carter Family and jimmie Rodgers fan.I have listened to them for seventy years,

Lovely family that made wonderful music!
FYI, this took place at the 1953 Jimmy Rodgers Memorial Show in Meridian, MS. A piece of music history right there.

Treason ?!? Treason is a betrayal. Do you mean "treasure" ?!?
A history of country music right here!
I just finished the book 'Will you miss me when I am gone'. How sorry I felt for AP when he was left in the valley alone. Thanks for this music.

Everyone talks about Maybelle, but Sara was IT!!!
Schade ging die Zeit so schnell vorbei. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks, I wanted to believe that was was the original family, but the car in the photo looks too modern.
never mind the sound is bad, full of scratches it is still GREAT to listen to the songs.
Great piece of history!
Reminds me of the Tennesse and Va countryside and mountains

This is definitely Sara and Maybelle. No doubt. Look at the picture. It's them standing there.
The MC says they were discovered in Bristol, VA, but it was on the TN side of Bristol!!!

Sara lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her aunt and uncle.

Sean Coxen, Hi. Do you know Sara’s family last name-its givin as Dougherty? Curious where you learned her bio? Thank you.
Sarah and Maybelle were also cousins. After Sarah divorced AP, she married his cousin, Coy Bayes.

Incorrect, This was the tnhree originals on Jimmie Rodgers Day '53--and theoir are photos and film that reconfirm it.
Maybelle is here in this recording. You can clearly hear her Gibson L-5 along with her Carter Scratch.

Well, if AP hadn't run off and left Sara alone at home with no food or firewood, and with the kids to look after....they might have stayed married.

Hi
Does anyone know if there is motion picture footage of The Carter Family in concert? I'd love to see what they looked like in action.

For the record, Maybelle was not involved in this 1953 reunion.
If you dont know Maybelles Voice and Guitar work?? Dont Comment a lie!
She most certainly was! You can clearly hear her singing
