- Let's see if this Gel Blaster Surge FAKE COPY is as good as the real thing. I'm naming it the SCOURGE. I don't promote buying knock-off designed products. It hurts the inventor and confuses and disappoints the consumer. I bought this simply to test and prove why you should buy the real thing.
First of all, the real SURGE is not much more expensive, only about $10 more. It's not worth the price difference to buy the fake SCOURGE. The one advantage of the SCOURGE is the removable battery.

They are similar. I've played using the Fake SCOURGE against friends using the real SURGE. The slightly lower FPS of the Fake Surge meant that they could shoot further and hit me when I could not even reach them. Also, I have to use hardened gels, otherwise, it smashes a lot of the stock gels. I prefer the replaceable battery of the fake one, but I don't like to support fake products, so I would not buy more of these. It's not much cheaper and not as good.

The SURGE uses a gearbox-driven piston that is a typical design of gel blasters and airsoft. It is the same gearbox uses in the popular STD M1911. All the gears, piston, piston housing, and inner barrel are plastic. The motor is not a standard size that I could find. The motor is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Although this battery is not easily accessible, it uses a common connector, so it could be easily changed if it died completely. The circuit board charges the Li-ion battery through a USB C connector. Power to the motor is directly controlled by a micro switch.
The battery dimensions are 46.5 x 21.3 x 11.7 mm. The connector appears to be a JST-PH2 which are 2mm pitch vs the commonly used in RC Hobby JST-XH which are 2.54mm pitch (0.1"). JST-PH2 connectors can be identified by the single straight guide on the front, vs the JST-XH connectors have 2 barb-shaped guides on the front. A battery like this with the JST-PH2 connectors is less common. Also most 500mah 2s Lipo batteries for RC seem to be ~55mm x 30mm x 14mm which is a little bit larger, and will be a tight squeeze or require some trimming of plastic between the PCB and motor to fit. That makes me wonder if the 500mah rating on the Gel Blaster battery is true. The size appears to be more similar to 400mah batteries.
This is the closest battery I've found with the same size JST-PH2 (E-flite micro connector) connector. Dimensions: 48x29x11mm The wire looks shorter though, so not sure how well it will reach.

The knock off is more than likely made from a mold used to make a prototype version of the Surge, the foreign manufacturers do not always destroy the old molds.

I could be wrong but It could be Gel Blaster copied from the Chinese product as I don't think Gel Blaster has a patent. If anyone can find the patent from Gel Blaster please let me know.

Ill bet the "knock off" is a test revision that was not used so the company sold it off. A lot of Chinese mold companies do this. They will sell off the molds that aren't used for real company's mass production. They will claim the molds were destroyed or tossed and someone must have recovered them "oh no how did that happen" but nah... they sell that stuff off. its expensive to make molds and just let someone else make them for you right?
looks like the hopper uses the same standard cap and threads as a soda bottle so you could use a soda bottle as a hopper

Interesting that the scourge lights up with the surge doesn't... Usually the knockoffs go cheaper, so I wonder if that was originally planned by the surge and they scrapped it? I don't know if I've seen knockoffs where they try to one-up the original??? Sure definitely fires better so I wonder if the extra battery energy used to light up the deflectors in the front takes away from the firing power of the gun? Would be interesting to find out what happened with the surge and if they planned to light the deflectors up then abandoned those plans.

Im DEAD!!! We got one of these from Ali express. SAME EXACT BOX. The box alone was great entertainment haha! I have to say, this brand wasnt bad actually! The quality was better than the OG surge I had. Not bad for almost half price. It was like $32 bucks on Ali express when I got it

I have 3 versions that I'm reviewing/comparing, the original, 1.5 (variable FPS), and 2.0 (swappable barrels)
I'd have made the feeder go in at 45 degrees to offset the hopper from the sights. Would also be interesting to see if they fit a 2L bottle

Pretty sure that "oil" is just mold release. The knockoff probably just didn't wash the parts before assembling it.

Aren't the threads on the hoppers just standard soda bottle threads? I wouldn't be surprised if they both use soda bottle preforms to make the hoppers.Also means you could use soda bottles for hoppers.

The pipe from which those balls come out in scourge was smaller in diameter than that of surge.

There are no upgrades for these blasters. Do you know of some? I only know of replacement gears or gearbox.

@@wm69 These are completely different inside from larger blasters like Splatrball that use airsoft standard gears. Mainly there are only plastic gears available from China. I've seen some metal gears, but since the piston rack is still plastic, the metal gears will likely tear that up. I had a stroke reading the title.
i'm pretty sure the one i bought online is the "scourge", i gave it to my son as a Gift. At first it was work fine but after a few minutes of test firing without gellets (because it's still soaked in water) the scourge stopped working. I guess the problem is the gears because the motor is still working. Did you experienced this with your scourge? if yes, can you make a video how to fix it? 😁

They aren't plastic pellets. They are gels which are very much biodegradable. They are even commonly used in potting soil to provide water over longer periods of time. They are also used in baby diapers, hair gel, gel soaps, and can be used in some food products. They are environmentally safe and can be made food grade.

Wonder what the fps difference is compared to the new Surge 1.5/2.0
I have both of those also, the SURGE 1.5 with variable 90-170 FPS, and what I assume is the SURGE 2.0 (got it at Walmart) with fixed 175 FPS. I have not yet tested the 1.5 variable, but the 2.0 shoots reliably right above 175fps.

What issues did you have with them. The versions are weird. I bought the 175 fixed FPS at Walmart, but the ones being sold online like at Amazon are still the variable FPS. I wonder if the 175 fixed FPS is a Walmart exclusive?
@@engineerable no the new ones are being sold directly from them as well other places still had the old ones left in stock and I had 1that wouldn't shoot far or hard at all took them apart made sure all the air seals were good and still didn't shoot right the other I had worked good at first then started acting up but an internal clean and relube and it's back to shooting hard again I got 3 1.5s total now lol

The SURGE is worth the $20 extra, just wish it had a removable battery. If you try to use the Scourge to battle someone with a SURGE, they'll be able to hit you before you can reach them.

At this point in time, the SURGE costs about $50, and the SCOURGE is probably about $39.
That oil probably isn't oil it's probably a mold release used to take out all the Plastics from the injection molding

The Gel Blaster SURGE performs much better. It shoots a little faster, and doesn't smash the gel balls. The only advantage the SCOURGE (fake one) has is a replaceable battery.

The reverse happens more often, it's just hard to tell, because AliExpress steals the images and content
They likely have this manufactured in china and the company that assembles it either sold the design or has another assmebly line where they make the exact thing with a different name and sell it worldwide.
In order to prevent this when you have a factory in china mass produce your product, you need a copyright in China as well otherwise they won't care if you have one in the USA.
And the subtle differences are how they avoid lawsuits where the copright is applicable.

Copyright is pointless in China. Their Chinese governments do nothing to prevent it, and stopping one manufacturer only solves the problem for a few days, before another manufacturer sees an opening... I know of people that have gone oversees to confront manufacturers, only to be met with armed staff and police who escorted them off of the manufacturers property (the police are not copyright law upholders).
There are only two ways to beat conterfeit items being made/sold (especially in China); 1) Be such a large company that the manufacturer wouldn't dare to make a clone of your product, putting them at risk of losing the contract to manufacture the original product, or, 2) Complete the assembly of the product locally with parts sourced from different manufacturers and always be ahead of the curve with new products or updates to existing products.
Most people who deal with China for manufacturing won't be a giant company so they only have the second option. Keeping the assembly local and sourcing parts from multiple manufacturers stops any one manufacturer having the complete design required to make the product. Despite this, clones will eventually begin to turn up, but making sure your own product is either updated to make it perform better than the clones or you've already moved on to a different product means you're always selling something that has additional value and therefore, gives people a reason to source it from you, OR, you've already made a new product and that new product is not yet being copied so you maintain your market position at the top.

Your battery is different because it's a single cell lipo. For sure they are mislabeling the capacity. I have a tester, but it's not even worth the time on that battery.

@@Dead_Goat It's not. And it doesn't last as long as the stock SURGE battery that is marked 500mah. It's also about half the size of the 500mah battery. Cheap batteries are notoriously mislabeled for double to triple the real Ah ratings.

Swap the battery on the scourge to a 11.1v
Don't think the gears will last long at 11.1v. Need to replace with metal gears.

No. It is just the cost of enforcing the law. Did you see anyone faking Huawei or OnePlus phone in China? Nope bcs they have a team of lawyers who can kick your ass if you do that in China. Guess if someone fakes Huawei phone in the US, what Huawei can do?
Also, as long as they didn’t patent in China, anyone is free to patent. Just like the patent thief case in the US as well. You need to prove you are the original author and they steal it from you. Again, the cost is what matters. If the Surge people are ambitious, they should patent it in China early on as well.
Assuming the Surge is the original design and they patented in the US, it is just insane to assume the same patent will be automatically effective in China or the rest of the world. It’s different countries. What do you think China is? Part of the US? Then you guys will have Chinese President everything term then.
Lastly, the product should not be imported into the US if there is a patent accepted by the US patent officer. The US custom is the one to blame by letting it in.

What I would do, if I’m the supply chain manager of this company, I would advise the higher up management applying for the patent application in China before the product design and spcs being sent to the Chinese manufacturer. And I can easily sue the manufacturer for millions of patent fees in the court. Especially when you have a patent already, it’s a easy win. This is actually what the most of the US companies have been doing lately.
And honestly, the patent/legal fees cost only a fraction of what the lawyer charges in the US. The Surge people should have patented it before sending it to manufacturing. Specially when patent theft happens everywhere with all the overseas manufacturers(India, Vietnam and China). If the Surge people want to be more successful, they just have to manage their supply chain better without keeping their mind on least spend possible.
Critical mistake to not shoot the other ammunition that was made for the knock-off
The ammo included with the knock-off is generic, cheap ammo. It wasn't "made for it". Better to compare using the same ammo.

@@ogmog @Kim Sandstedt Ammo varies widely in quality. The generic stuff included with cheap blasters is basically trash. The stuff I used in the test is a little better quality. Then there are high end hardened gel balls that have better accuracy and higher FPS. Once you run out of the included ammo, you have to buy more, and it won't exactly the same that came with it.
