  • Many Hollow Knight fans have wondered how vessels grow, and why some that we see in the game have grown but others haven't. This video is about my speculations as to the answers to these questions.

@@lifebloodcore2106hmmm, perhaps lifeblood played a role in this development aswell somehow. Frequent exposure to the stuff affected the vessels shells and caused them to grow larger. If I remember correctly there is some life blood found in the ancient Basin and the pale King may have made it taboo for all bugs because he probably wanted access to all of it or could just be something that should be used in moderation.
When I saw your channel name I thought you'd talk about this lol.
Edit: Perhaps the broken vessel took too much which caused its shell to crack and break but I doubt this. I think it was likely Hornet because she can be found at the top of the birthplace which was sealed off and she is likely searching for vessels to kill and she found the source if the vessels. She is doing this because according to her they all seem to want to take the hollowknights place. With most of the vessels being weak and you the exception. I mean this could just be because it was a boss but, you have a lot less health than her when you'd first meet.
I say Hornet was the one who killed it because it had what seemed like a good moveset with moves that somehow mimic yours with out soul. So yeah it might of gone through training like you said to get bigger but I feel like that's not enough.
I mean, life blood has what looks like it's very own higher being/powerful/ancient similar to the shade lord so maybe it has some form of influence over those that consume it as it has strange properties.

My theory is the wyrms naturally age very slowly, but in tough environments they age faster to produce offspring sooner, the knight didn't grow because wasn't pressured by the environment, however THK was pressured by the environment from a very young age and probably was given a very healthy diet, idk it makes sense to my midget brain, the food would likely be essential for growth seeing as how their shell isn't void but is physical matter so inorder for the shell to grow, more matter would be needed hence why they would need sufficient amounts of food to grow and keep their shells from wearing away

Maybe this is too elaborate and convoluted, but I think it's Hallownest itself that makes the Vessels grow. Much like how the Pale King grants consciousness to those who enter his kingdom, I think the Vessels, at least while the Pale King was alive, had the ability to grow while within the realm of the Pale King's influence due to being part god themselves.
The protagonist vessel we play as had left Hallownest an indeterminate time ago, and like how the consciousness of bugs fade outside of Hallownest, so too does the growth of a vessel.
The Broken Vessel must have been alive during when the Pale King was still alive, and survived long enough that it began to grow.
As for other vessels, I suspect they either lacked the experience to survive long enough to grow, or they returned during an era of Hallownest where the influence of the King could possibly be weaker due to his demise.
Of course all of this is just solely dependent on what we are shown in game. For all we know, there could be Vessels who choose to never return to Hallownest after escaping from the Abyss, (maybe we'll see one in Silksong) or however unlikely, there could be Vessels either dead or alive in Hallownest we just never saw on our journey

My theory is that vessels grow normally but to grow they need to be outside the abyss as the abyss stunts their growth somehow, the hk was the first one to leave and he spent a lot of time outside the abyss and grew to full size, then the broken vessel escaped and he spent quite some time wandering around and grew a little, then the knight escaped and he just spent a little time wandering until the he was called out and he returned to hallownest

My theory is that soul is what makes them grow, or rather excess soul. So we know that vessels can mend their shell through healing, which takes up soul. I imagine that vessel growth is also similar, that they grow by healing up cracks in their shell as they get larger, but this time it takes more soul than just a normal heal because they need not just mend, but create a whole new bit of shell. Since the hollow knight was raised inside the palace, and was only trained in controlled environment, they had plenty of soul at disposal and could grow larger, maybe even more quickly and efficiently, whereas the knight/ghost has to face enemies and fight battles back to back, and has to gather soul themself, so they prioritise healing and spells over growing larger.

    I propose an alternative theory:
    Void.
The Vessels are beings of the Void; it's frequently theorized in the fandom that the Void 'hollowed out' the children they were meant to be and they became infused with the Void, potentially creating the shades within them.
In this sense, the Vessels are essentially already dead by the time they're born; Hornet calling the Knight 'Ghost' was meant more literally than a player would first realize. The Vessels are ghosts, are empty shells, of the beings they were supposed to be. The Void literally killed them, and then replaced them in some way.
And dead things do not grow.
But Void itself is a strange substance, one that we just don't know that much about. We know that it's deadly, we know the Radiance fears/hates it, and we know it has some sort of influence. Void does not behave in any way that normal substance does.
So the amended question we should be asking is "How do beings made completely of a typically deadly substance create more of said substance to increase in size?"
And in answer to that, I don't think they do. I don't think Void can replicate or make more of itself, at least not in the same sense that flesh can. I think that Void might be able to turn other things into Void, but I don't think it can self-perpetuate. Void can't make more Void from nothing.
I think it needs to be absorbed. Either intentionally, or ambiently.
Because that's the only difference between THK and Lost Kin and the other Vessels: they were near the Void in the Abyss, or at least near a potential source of Void.
There is no sign of Void anywhere else in Hallownest outside the Ancient Basin. None of the other dead Vessels ever even got near the Basin before they died. The ones in Deepnest were hunted by Nosk, likely very soon after they'd escaped the Abyss; none of them have a nail. We can assume that the Greenpath vessel was called back to Hallownest by THK's/The Radiance's 'call', as implied by the Dreamers. They're in Greenpath, which is really close to the surface, and even directly connected to Howling Cliffs.
And while it's never outright stated Hornet killed them, the game seems to heavily imply that she did. Hornet attacks us in Greenpath to protect the Hollow Knight Seals, because she knows why Ghost came back. What they'd seek to do. She says it. And she's fighting to kill. The Greenpath Vessel was likely a Vessel who wasn't strong enough to beat her and didn't have the convenience of being the Player Character.
They'd escaped, left the Kingdom, and came back, just like Ghost did.
Lost Kin is ambiguous. The way they fight seems to imply that they collected a bunch of skills and equipment before they died, so it's possible they were also heeding the call; they might've returned far earlier and gotten farther than any other Vessel before their death. Or, it's equally possible that they returned on their own sometime before the Intro Cutscene scream, and wandered about until they met their fate. There's just too little information about them to tell.
But they made it to the Ancient Basin, an area that at the time of the game has Void smoke actively leaking into it from the Abyss below. We don't know when they died, or what they'd done before that. The amount of time spent in the Basin or around Hallownest is unknown. This is, admittedly, one of the shakier parts of the theory, because BV just can't resist being a massive pain to Vessel Growth theories apparently.
And the Pure Vessel was, as you pointed out, raised in the White Palace, by the Pale King. The Pale King, who has a workshop where he actively built Void constructs, with giant containers of Void stashed inside of it. If there is anyone in the entirely of Hallownest who would know how to raise a Void being, to make them grow, it's the King. For better or for worse, he is the one with the most knowledge of Void in the game.
It's not too much of a stretch to imagine the King regularly 'feeding' the Pure Vessel Void to stimulate their growth.
The act of absorbing Void and then growing is likely a slow process that could be sped up or slowed down, or even stopped completely, based on how much Void a vessel is 'consuming', similar to how one can manipulate how fast snakes grow based on how often you feed them.
Feed them too often or too much, and they'll grow relatively quickly; at a detriment to their overall health and longevity. But should the snake go on a hunger strike for three months, that's three months they're not getting nutrients and thus not devoting energy or resources into growing, thus their next shed takes longer to happen than it originally would have.
Frequent or large infusions of Void likely speeds up the growing/maturing process. No Void at all causes the Vessel to stagnate and remain the same size indefinitely. Vessels don't seem to need to eat or drink, so it's not like they'd starve to death, and the lack of Void doesn't seem to affect them. Excluding environmental hazards and combat, Vessels don't seem like they can really die at all.
Ghost just returned back, and even then they only spend a limited amount of time around Void. They likely escaped and left Hallownest while still a 'baby', and with no Void outside of the Abyss, their growth was stunted for that entire time. Just as the Greenpath and Lost Kin's potentially was. And, maybe the Deepnest Vessels, although I feel they're still so young mostly because they're just dead.
There is no other variable that I've seen proposed that works as well as Void does. Some people have suggested light, water, soil, food, and Soul, drawing on the White Lady plant half of the Vessels and the Pure Vessel's childhood environment as potential reasons, but those theories always fall apart with Lost Kin or just don't make sense in the first place. Most seem to forget what the Vessels themselves even are, in the context of the canon. The Fandom has blurred that line for a lot of us, altered and built them up to be more than what Canon states they are. Because we as fans like to humanize our characters. That's not a bad thing, it's just not something that holds up in the cold hard facts of the canon.
The Vessels are not alive in the typical sense of the word. They don't grow typically either.
Nearness and consumption of Void is the strongest option that makes sense while accounting for most of the variables. It's not perfect, but at least it's logical.

The abyss is literally void. All the vessels were near it. If your theory were true, the husks in the void would be husks of full-grown vessels.
Also, the King's light from his kingdom lrevented void from entering as his light was brighter than the Radiance. The only reason void began seeping outside the abyss and ancient basin was because the lighthouse was shut off and the king was already dead.

The Hollow Knight and the Broken Vessel both grew up, and it's been proven that neither of them were pure vessels. In the White Palace, there is a text that states that void denies time, which explains why our ghost of Hallownest is still in a childlike state while its siblings are either older or dead. The Pure Vessel and the Broken Vessel were not actually pure, which led them both to age as normal while the Knight stayed as a child.

The vessels where made by the white lady and the pale king, there eggs where then placed in the abyss to then merge with the void. This is shown through the void heart charm and how you get it. The void can be used to contain the radiance so the pale king used it to try and save his kingdom. My theory is that the vessels can only grow when in contact with pale beings I.e the pale king and white lady. So my guess is that the pure vessel was able to grow do to his proximity to the pale king, emotionally close as we see at the end of the path of pain. And as we can see from the godmaster dlc the god seekers are drawn to pale beings, godly beings. So maybe the vessels being close to gods allow them to grow. And for the broken vessel, where you find and fight the BV is close to the pale kings palace so maybe he grew due to proximity to the pale palace. Anyway that’s just my thoughts.

Moulting is a process real bugs with exoskeltons do which is when an outside part of the body, in the case of most bugs exoskeltons, falls off so a new bug can grow out of it. Presumably without the mask the vessels become a shade and so most vessels die during moulting. The Hollow Knight presumably either was barely kept alive by the Pale King when moulting or they never moulted and for some reason this mutated their mask.

I just want to say this theory is not mine, and since it's been around for a *looong* time, I unfortunately cannot find who made it.
I believe the reason why the Pure Vessel is fully grown was because of White Lady. White Lady most likely has some sort of growth related abilities for a couple reasons
-The flora in Queen's Gardens is much bigger than in greenpath, and we know QG and GP were the same at one point
-Mosscreeps, known as Mossflies in QG have wings, which mosscreeps don't have.
-Marmu was waiting for The Queen to give her wings.
-Her size grows and changes a lot, we see her imprint in the WP nursery, which is much smaller than her current form, and in Godhome she is freaking massive.
So I believe that she did some magic on Pure Vessel that made it grow to the size it is now.
For the other vessels, I'm pretty sure that's just natural variations. Their cloaks (Which are actually wings!) are clearly different than Pale King who they inherited it from, so it's not a ridiculous to assume it's just some variation like with their horns.

    • @cawareyoudoin7379
      @cawareyoudoin7379 Рік тому +1

Marmu was probably told about their metamorphosis. They are a moth caterpillar- so they would naturally have wings after their transformation.
The cloaks/wings are not necessarily inherited only from the Pale King- the White Lady's bindings look awfully similar, even moreso in colour, and they might also be a natural part of her body.

    • @MossMothMyBeloved
      @MossMothMyBeloved Рік тому +1

@@cawareyoudoin7379 Although Marmu is based off of a puss moth caterpillar, that does not mean she is one. Moths in hollow knight are not the same as moths in real life and there is no evidence Marmu will grow up to be one.
And yes, they aren't necessarily inherited by the Pale King, that's just the most probable explanation for their cloaks. They are indeed wings, you can actually see what they should've looked like when double jumping (The monarchflies will hold the cloak strands together) and the Pale King is the only one of the parents to have wings. I doubt the wings just suddenly came out of no where.
I think you confused White Lady's clothes with her bindings. The grey thing that wraps around her is not the bindings. The seal around her is the bindings, and the seal and cloak are not similar at all. One is pure white, the other is dark grey. And it's definitely not a natural part of her body, she created it. "These bindings about me, I've chosen to erect", and she created them after the vessel project so the vessels couldn't have inherited them.

@@MossMothMyBeloved Grubs grow up into Grubberflies through metamorphosis. Although it's possible it works differently, it's still something based in real life and alluded to by the "learning to fly" line. Perhaps the White Lady can speed up/kickstart a metamorphosis though, and that's why Marmu was waiting for her.
I know they are wings. Latent and only usable with a spell (or whatever the Monarch Wings are), but wings nonetheless. Don't treat me like I don't know my lore, okay? I know that the White Lady has a magical binding visible with the use of the spell- but just like with the door and chains of the Black Egg Temple, bindings can be both magical and physical. They might be clothes indeed- but then again, we aren't really certain what is and isn't clothes in this family. I interpret them as a part of her, whether they are bindings, clothes, both, or something else.

Secondly, I don't really see how the "learning to fly" line alludes to Marmu going through a metamorphosis, could you explain how it does for me?
And I now realized I misread your original reply, yeah it definitely wasn't inherited by only PK, White Lady's genes definitely changed the wings. My bad, I thought you were saying it was inherited by White Lady only for some reason.
And I should've said probably when talking about how the seal is her bindings. We don't know for certain, I just feel it's more probable that the seal around her looks similar to a seal of binding.

      @@MossMothMyBeloved Yea, it's cool np
A caterpillar going through a metamorphosis to become a butterfly and get wings is a very popular and well-known trope. Marmu speaks in a very childlike manner ("will you play with me, stranger?"), suggesting they are a child- and a caterpillar is a child of a butterfly (or moth in this case). It's not a stretch to conclude that Marmu was a kid about to fly into adulthood.
Yeah, we can't really tell what the grey stuff is and whether it has something to do with the bindings.
I suppose there is concept art, which of course is not canon, but in the three statues, she does seem to have a similar sort of wrapping around her. So perhaps it was intended to not be related to the binding at all.
Gotta look for concept art to confirm, because I do remember some White Lady stuff I've seen

But being walking corpses is kind of their thing! They are reanimated, hollowed out bodies. The White Lady herself says: "The place where it was born, where it died, where it began...".
They may not be dead-dead, because they are capable of moving and seemingly having thoughts and emotions, but from a completely biological point if view, they are dead, inert. Much like sci-fi robots have minds and behave like they are alive, but they are not made of organic tissues and fluids; it's a different kind of life.
Maybe shades do endure one or several metamorphosis? And maybe their bodies warp as a result of that. We do get to see what the Hollow Knight's shade looks like, and it's different than that of the protagonist. The shades of the abyss also are different. And if one beats the Absolute Radiance, one gets to see, I guess, the Absolute Darkness/Void? A completely matured and perfected shade.
Also! Since the bodies the vessels use are the spawn of the White Lady, they may be made out of wood? Maybe that's why they never seem to rot. Maybe they are exoskeletons, but they are fossilized?
Or maybe I'm wrong and they are alive, so vessels are hybrid organisms made of void and bug that do go through complex physical changes.

Great! I wrote an entire essay of my thoughts, missclicked and everything disappeared. Man, the luck I always have. Here we go again.
I have my own theory as to how and why the Vessels grow. This theory is extremely speculative so feel free to debunk it.
I thought that maybe the Vessels, like normal living beings, grow on their own when they get older. However, this theory has a few issues I wanted to discuss.
First of all, how do the Vessels grow if they are dead. The White Lady states that the Vessels died down in the abyss, probably as soon as the Void took over them. How then, can Vessels like the Hollow Knight grow, if they are dead.
secondly, why doesn't the Knight grow at all. The Knight is about as old as the other Vessels and survived over a very long timespan. So why didn't it grow like some of it's siblings.
According to my theory, the Hollow Knight grew to adulthood because it lived long enough to do so. Similarly did the Broken Vessel, although it died before it could grow larger. The Vessels in Nosk's lair are a bit bigger than the Knight (at least that is how they look to me), so I assume they survived for a short while, made it to deepnest and were then killed by Nosk. The greenpath Vessel is about as big as the Knight, so it either died not long after escaping the abyss or left Hallownest and came back later like the Knight did.
There are two possibilities as to why the Knight and the greenpath Vessel didn't grow and the other Vessels did. One is that the Knight and the greenpath Vessel were really hollow (assuming that the other Vessels like the Hollow Knight, the Broken Vessel and the deepnest Vessels weren't), thus preventing them from growing. The other possibility, which I prefer, was already mentioned by @midovodella. They state that Hallownest could be the reason for the Vessels to grow. (For a better explanation, check out midovodella's comment) This theory, assuming it is true, would explain why the greenpath Vessel and the Knight didn't grow, while being away from Hallownest.
Tbh with you, the only reason I created this theory is because I dont like the explanation, that the Hollow Knight grew from training. It just seems very unrealistic to me, that a creature could grow so much, just by training very often. The description of the Pure Vessel (A fully grown Vessel, trained to prime form) propably just refers to it, being at it's peak in terms of combat skills. If I missed or overlooked something, please point it out.

The vessels dont grow. The hollow knights body was morphing due to the radience. As tactically, growing wouldnt be necessarry for them to fight or fufill their duities as they are extremely powerful with their small size and a bigger body means bigger target, the smaller the target the more accurate the opponent has to be like trying to hit a fly. The knight is as old as the hollow knight and wandered the wastelands for a while and the wasteland beyond hollowknight shows no signes of stopping aging. I believe the radience either began morphing the hollow knights body to match their own (think of how jesus was the living embodiment of god. And the radience is trying to mimic its body the best it can with the hollow knight) Or the hollow knights body grew under the strain of trying to hold the radienc's power and i believe this because of the cloak the vessels wear. The cloak seems to be a part of them and is made of a material similar to moth wings. If aging occured naturally then the cloak would at least be as long as the pale kings once fully grown. But the hollow knights cloak is still small meaning it hasnt grown with it either because it cant grow or it had not been deemed important enough to by the radience since it doesnt mimic the radiences F L O O F and growing it would make it more akin to the pale kings.

Does anyone know if there are videos dedicated to the pale flower? Why does the knight decide to give it to Elderbug, the White Lady, Emility, the nail master... Why can't you give it to Quirrel???
I thought about what could unite them, and here's what. I have a variant that he considers them in some way "unfortunate". The white lady is tied to one place, Elderbug just stays in one place all the time, lives a boring life, does nothing, Emilia is selfish, but she also seems to be locked in one place, a nail master away from her brothers and all alone. The God-seeker is simply offended by fate, let's leave it.
The Knight hears from the Gray Weeper that this flower is a gift of love, but judging by the fact that he offers it to Emility, who he does not need for nothing at all, I think he does not consider this a sign of "love". (Did he even understand what it was?). You can say that he is not able to understand "happiness" or "unhappiness", but I think that to some extent, he can. He is constantly doing something, studying, fighting - he has a very strong will, there is definitely something in him.

I think a vessel's ability to grow is entirely based on luck. some don't grow at all and remain with the look of children (Protagonist), some grow to the point of towering over folk (THK), and some can grow only a little bit (BV). There's no genetics involved, no way to estimate it, no average height, it's just whatever the vessel gets. The reason why we don't see any of the taller ones like THK in our journey is either because of their size allowing for them to have enough strength to reach the top of the kingdom and escape or none of the ones capable of growing that big managed to escape the abyss.

But what I don't fully understand is: why did the Hollow Knight need to grow in the first place. (Let's call it "the protagonist") the protagonist is fully able to contain the Radiance within it's comparatively tiny body just as well, if not possibly better, than the former Hollow Knight can.
Also, why did the Hollow Knight need to practice with the nail? Really, why did it have to become a Knight at all? The Radiance strikes the mind, not the body. And, again, the protagonist doesn't (technically) need armor, nail arts or magic to contain the light, it seems more of a liability than anything else, to expose a vessel to feelings and thoughts, through having life experiences.
It would seem like, maybe, they actually had other plans for the Hollow Knight before the orange shit hit the fan? Maybe it was a plan B? Maybe they didn't know how the Radiance would counter-attack, so they wanted to have a being capable of withstanding any threat?
Just seems like a waste, to make such a small being shed so many skins just to be locked up in a black egg within a temple buried underground.

The pale king eventually realised the Hollow Knight was too strong and if something went wrong it would destroy all of Hallownest, so the pale king chopped off its arm to weaken it but not render it defenceless.

@@theknight1702 It was the king that chopped off his arm? How did the Hollow Knight allow this? Was it really so loyal, even as it acquired thoughts of it's own?
Again, on my playthrough, I was under the impression that it was somehow self-inflicted, or that it's mass was consumed so that the rest of it's body could mutate further.
Was it the king himself who did it or do you think it was one of guards, or constructs? Or did the Hollow Knight do it to itself, after it was ordered to?
And what I meant by "why did he need to grow and train" is: why would he need to become capable of fighting if he was never meant to fight any, at least not physically.
Obviously, becoming bigger and mightier can be of great help in a fight, but I don't think the Hollow Knight was ever really meant to fight anything? The king already had a group of extremely powerful and devoted knights, guards and robots at his disposal, so what more could the Pure Vessel add to that kind of force?
I understand that strengthening one's body and techniques can also strengthen one's mind but (plus, in the case of the protagonist, you literally have the same fighting abilities wether you are in Hollownest or the Dream), in the other hand, the Hollow Knight was meant to be mindless, as to become incorruptible.
It's also true that the Hollow Knight wasn't meant to fight neither the Radiance in the Dream, but merely contain it, nor it's thralls in Hollownest, as the Seals and Dreamers protected it from any physical threat the Radiance, or any other entity, could conjure (including the protagonist, who was more or less allowed by the Dreamers to progress without having to fight them in the Dream).
As far as I can tell, the Hollow Knight never even fought the Radiance, and the player, too, is given the option of not fighting it. It's only when Hornet proposes that you destroy it, rather than contain it, that you can do this (with her help, of course), meaning that, by default, vessels will make no attempts to fight, no matter what.
So, again, why was the Hollow Knight so prepared to fight anything, if the only thing he ever really fights is it's own weakling sibling, even under the command of the very thing it is meant to antagonize? It makes for a better Boss fight, of course, but I see no other good reason.

@@lordtomlluckrahthegreat9014 For the arm my other theory is that the Radiance destroyed it while trying to break free, because the spot where the arm should have been is covered in infection. After the Knight defeats the Hollow Knight all the infection in it leaks out, so if something else killed the Hollow Knight the entirety of the infection would be out so the Hollow Knight should be strong enough to fight off things that aren’t strong enough to seal the infection afterwards. Once the Hollow Knight realises that you are another Vessel that can contain the Radiance it starts stabbing itself to stop itself from killing you.

Personally I think that the infection distorted the hollow knight, and the broken vessel/lost kin was normal, as they aren't that much bigger than the knight.
