People may already know this but I feel it’s important to mention based on the shooting scene. It adds a depth of sadness. - Amanda and Martin broke off their long relationship (they have 2 kids, and never confirmed marriage but were together for many years) RIGHT BEFORE this season started filming. That last scene of them together had to be so rough to preform. There is an outtake from some clip I saw and Amanda (Mary) was unable to stop crying after they got the take. Moffat also said that while the death scene was being shot Sue Virtue (Moffet’s wife and producer of the show) cried back behind the camera the whole time.
I actually didn't know that Martin and Amanda were in an actual relationship (I started binge watching the series in 2020 sooo... very late) and well, Martin does look great with that hair style especially because he was filming Black Panther at the time (I think).
I loved season 4, but I binge watched this entire show in like 2 days lol. I can understand being upset about a season if you wait a year or so inbetween. Can’t wait for the rest of these!
The showrunners have always been Moffat and Gatiss, but I don't think they planned for Andrew Scott's Jim Moriarty to be so well received, or for the show to go on past three series.
If you really like to read Sherlock Holmes, there is a contemporary writer who continued his stories. He's older and supposedly retired, but still taking some cases now and then. It's called the beekeeper's apprentice I think. I believe there are more books but I've only read the first two, so I can't say how good it continues to be, but the first one is great and the second one pretty good.
S4 is generally considered shit but I do think next episode is pretty great. Excited for the reaction to the end revelation. Wonder if Shane will recognise the Dream Lord!
Juliette Reacts I don't know why people say it's bad. Honestly some people just are so nitpicky about everything and have too high expectations. Best thing to do is just to go into to something without any full expectations
Kyle Emergency Epic McCrory It's fine to have your own opinions, I formed my own. I didn't enjoy 4x1 - I thought the plot was overly convoluted and ultimately unsatisfying. Same for the finale. I loved 4x2 though. Overall, I'm a big fan of the show. When the first series aired I named my cat Sherlock and went on to write my dissertation about 2x1. I don't think 4x1 and 4x3 are terrible enough to ruin the show but I definitely don't plan to rewatch them in the future.
Juliette Reacts I didn’t like episode 1 but I loved episode 2 and actually really enjoyed episode 3 and was kind of surprised that so many people hated it. Imo there have been worse episodes than episode 1 of season 4 (blind banker etc)
Juliette Reacts The thing is, I kinda liked S4 mostly because it went slightly back to the format that made Sherlock well... Sherlock! Just like when you watched seasons 1 or 2, except there's a very different sense of direction and you get to explore a lot more from John, Sherlock and Mary in a smaller amount of time without creating conflict with the plot and all of them are finally on the right page. Both seasons really have great moments when they hit, especially in episode 2, but when Sherlock gets too convoluted on the fantastical side of it or when they rush important events of the story, the true grounded magic of the show gets a bit lost imo. That's why people were so divisive about S4. I personally don't think it's shit per se, at least it was a very creative approach to the show's drama and it did pack a punch, something that I felt was lacking in S3. But, like I said, it's the grounded magic that makes the show, and Sherlock often gives you the right smell but rarely lets you eat the whole meal. Episode 1 rushed a lot of what could've been an interesting case, episode 2 goes back to the grounded magic, episode 3 is original, interesting, thought provoking, and yet... it's too immersed in the fantastical aspect of Sherlock. And I do hope Shane recognizes the Dream Lord. Toby is the best!
I honestly don't understand why people moan about season 4 I thought it was brilliant , yes this was one of the slower episodes because it was all about Marys death really. But the season as a whole was very good.
skylark belle This episode is incredibely convoluted and doesn't expand enough on the AGRA story. The villain has next to no set up. The next episode is ok, though there are a lot of issues (there are a lot of videos explaining them). The last episode is an anomination that has no right to exist. Overall the season is mediocre at best IMO.
You keep talking about how this is the end of the show. That's not confirmed. Steven Moffat has mentioned having a plan for series 5, and most of the cast have said they would be willing to return. It just hasn't been put into production yet.
The actors who played John and Mary had been together for 16-year but had split up prior to filming this series. Whether that drove the plot or not is debatable. In original Stories, Mary died. There was no explanation as to why, it effectively to allow Watson to move back into Baker Street. High mortality rates in child birth though wouldn't have been unfamiliar to Doyle's readership; so, he may well have not seen any reason to elaborate why a fairly newly married man might be a widower.
I think the Moriarty deal is interesting i think they kind of felt like they killed him off early but they did the right thing. Andrew Scott and his Moriarty are so good though i could never begrudge them trying to slip him back in where possible.
Sadly either while this was being filmed or before, Amanda ( Mary) and Martin ( Watson) split up. I am sure that they were planning to kill Mary off anyway but it must have been hard to film those scenes. Mary in the books seemingly died off the page so we don’t know what happened to her and no explanation was given except Holmes referred to her as ‘The late Mrs Watson’. Some people said Watson texting another woman was out of character but I see it as him wanting some form of normality for once away from the danger and excitement that Sherlock and Mary invoke as he is normally drawn to that. It is one of the worse things to do but at least he stopped before it got physical because he knew it was wrong.
I suspect given the era, no explanation was given for her death because young widowers would have been far more common, with more women dying in child birth. Doyle could basically just write in the death of a fairly recently married woman and no one would question it as unusual or implausible. Equally, it never being really brought up and Watson apparently just returning to his previous life wouldn't have seem out of place either because he would have been expected to carry on, with stiff upper lip, and never show any sort of significant emotion in front of anyone else.
Exactly, was just stating the difference between the show and the books. At least we see how Mary died here and why. In the books it is assumed she probably contracted a disease common at the time( scarlet fever, TB etc) rather than childbirth as no children are mentioned. There is a novel by Anthony Horowitz called ‘the House of Silk’ saying that Mary was showing signs of being ill and she and Watson had had children.
It wouldn't be uncommon for birth/preganancy complications to result in the death of both the mother and child. There are of course various other reasons why someone might die, but married couples would be expected to have children, and the sort of timing, coinciding with Holmes apparent death at Reichenback Falls would make it vaguely fitting. Watson perhaps having fully committed to an ordinary life had tried to start a family, only to have it torn away from him. His wife and child dying in her first pregnancy would explain why children are never mentioned.
GenesisKnight They were commonly mistaken to be married but never were. They were together for 16 years and Martin said filming Sherlock while in the process of splitting with Amanda was not easy.
Agree with Shane it hurts like hell to hit their relarionship this hard now...but i understand the intention of it. John has his own issues too...Reichenbach faking his death etc did some shit and there's resentment built up...i think the writers felt the two needed to hit rock bottom then they would come back stronger than ever and be the steadfast duo we know and love. The next episode is heartbreakingly horrendously painful but i really like that they took some of this series to explore who would be best friends with Sherlock Holmes. Who ENJOYS that life? Who misses war? Who storms a drug den because he's been domestic for a few months? He's drawn to dangerous people and danger. Some people threw a fit this episode because of the texting like John has been some angel up until now, he blummin' hasn't. He's a good, solid, lovely man and I adore him but it is not WILDLY out of character for this guy to get bored of static lifestyle and take unnecessary risk. He flirted with Irene's friend the second he lay eyes on her and she was a stranger who knew his name somehow....anyway next episode despite the emotional destruction is brilliant. Fun vid boys!
To me, the fourth series just didn't feel like it had been written by the same people. Moffat's writing for Doctor Who had also changed around the same time. It felt to me like this series got made because of the money on offer and that none of the people from the actors to the writers was actually enjoying the process.
MattH Moffat is really weird in my opinion in both Sherlock and Doctor Who he has had some great ideas and story arcs but I feel as though he isn't a long game writer and can often make really weird and abrupt changes that just don't sit right with the audience.
4:25 And was hated by just as many women as by men. They were all dancing in the streets in London, Northern England, Scotland and Ireland when she dies.
Sherlock used to get over 10 million viewers in the uk which is great blindwave shud watch another uk show luther which is awesome and another show peaky blinders
God... I remember the first time watching this episode. I barely took it in, barely enjoyed it. I was just so... confused. It wasn't bad necessarily but it wasn't right. It was off. It was inconsistent. The characters were all wrong. Why introduce a new character who would amount to nothing? Why did Sherlock notice the Thatcher bust like he was having a premonition? Why was he having premonitions about Mary's death the entire episode? Why was the skull painting brightly lit up with no explanation? Why was Mary's death so cheesy and over dramatic? Since when can people jump in front of bullets when it was established last season: "it's not like it is in the movies." In what universe would Sherlock Holmes choose to go on a case with Mary instead of John. Considering what he has said in the past: "I would be lost without my blogger," and the fact that he threw himself off a building for John shot someone in the head for him that has to be the most ridiculous think in the entire episode. Other then the idea that John Watson would EVER be unfaithful. John was a serial dater. But he has always demonstrated his loyalty. The idea that he would even entertain the idea of cheating is crazy. And of course even though last season ended with Sherlock proclaiming he knew exactly what Moriarty was up to Moriarty is barely addressed and he has no idea what's going on. Obviously the writers wrote themselves into a hole they couldn't dig themselves out of so they just gave up.
the first episode of season four put me off so hard, but eventually I came back and watched it, I don't regret it. Ep2 is pretty good, fantastic ending. Ep3 is awesome All in all not the best season, but don't worry, this episode is the worst of them.
I'm assuming that all of s4 is mp/emp (mind palace/extended mind palace)- or mostly, and unlike most/many others who hate s4 if it's mostly or all mp/emp, that's what really drew me in (but not as much as I wanted to be); if I'm right. I don't hate s4 but I might like it less if I have to accept that s4 really happened. The beginning was funny and I honestly also found the episode boring after that, except Sherlock's pool fight scene. Mycroft and Jim are my favorites.
This episode is the worst of the series by a landslide. Sherlock not getting the gun part was totally uncharacteristic and a super lame and lazy way to kill off Mary. At least I liked the other two eposodes of s4 a lot better.
One of my least favorite episodes. This season was weird, not necessarily bad, had some really amazing moments, and some weird too. This episode aside from Mary dying wasn't very memorable.

I do wonder if they moved things up a bit. After series 3 they talked about planning a series 4 & 5. When it became obvious that they wouldn't be able to do a 5th series any time soon I think they changed the plan to resolve as much as possible with this one.
But how? What decisions did he make that turned it childish? Unwatchable even? Fans like you that spout vile rhetoric about steven moffat and his era, without even pointing out how and why you feel he ruined it are literally the worse of the fandom.

@@euphoriapotion2075 wait what the dog has significance? i just watched 4x1 and i read this comment lmao
Johns acting in this episode carries the entire thing Imo. I cry every time!

surelychoo Spoke to Moffat at London Comic-Con. He wants to do more and the cast are up for it.
Thomas Evans Benedict isnt
What makes you say that?
the actress Una Stubbs [Mrs Hudson] sadly died on 12th August 2021 !!
Next episode is amazing.

Great reaction
Love this episode
Love every episode
I just started watching Sherlock 10 days ago already binged it twice.
I was so mad that mary died, but I heard it was in the books so I guess it had to happen...
I liked this episode well enough. There isn't a single bad episode of Sherlock in my opinion.
If you really like to read Sherlock Holmes, there is a contemporary writer who continued his stories. He's older and supposedly retired, but still taking some cases now and then. Mary new she losts John and that he won't be able to get on if Sherlock died for real.
Marry's death and John cheating (?) on her was the worst thing they did in the entire show
The bad part of her death is that due to short seasons we disn't have much time with her
I think you guys missed the post-credit scene of the episode

It's easily the worst Sherlock season and the last episode is so so poor.
I don’t like this episode but I thought it was super fun and I personally love episodes 2 and 3

What Davos?
Why did they stop reacting to Sherlock after this??
I imagine they're there but are hidden for some reason and they're locked behind a pay wall on their website 😭

IMO the show killing off Mary was a big mistake. She was a badass character who worked well with Sherlock and John. I got used to them as a trio.

Probably my least favorite Season
Season 4 is my least favorite
I'm sorry for everyone who liked this episode. BUT THIS IS THE WORST SEASON EVER!! Just thinking about the last episode makes my blood boil 🔥 😡 🔥
This is considered the worst episode of the whole series.
David Blyth I actually really like 'A Sign of Three'
Moffat ruined Sherlock just like he did with Doctor Who that's quite the achievement
JustSomeRandomGuy Online But to be fair... He and Gatis made the show awesome in the first place.
How did he ruin doctor who?
James Jones he turned it into an unwatchable Childish Embarrassment
But how? What decisions did he make that turned it childish? Unwatchable even? Fans like you that spout vile rhetoric about steven moffat and his era, without even pointing out how and why you feel he ruined it are literally the worse of the fandom.
Ah, yes. The episode that killed the series.
For the record, season 4 is trash.
For the record, it has good ratings
