Overvolting toys! #8. Audio circuits goes crazy

- I put higher voltage on more toys primarily using a 0-30V bench power supply. But some toys required even more voltage to die! Used a Variac with a full bridge rectifier (input 230V) when I needed more than 30V.

I was expecting some negative comments about the furby. It was in really bad shape internally with lots of broken plastic, not worth much and I probably saved it from going in the trash...
But apparently, people are way more upset about Ernie. It didn't cost much, so I never thought it was some rarity. Sorry if it makes you sad.
yeah, next time research toys beforehand. the specific ernie is worth possibly quite a bit. i assume theres no way to repair it or fix the sound?
@@MelNobody the motor can be replaced, but there is no way to fix the sound ic after it dies.
The complainers should cancel their subscriptions to this channel. As for me I come here to see toys being destroyed but if at some point in the future I don't like it, I cancel my subscription and move on.

I am surprised at how much voltage the sound chips took as usually they blow at around 7volts. The smoke when the rabbit toy blew it's motor was so funny.
Yeah, sturdy sound chips in these ones (just slightly distorted 😂). Except for the last two cheap new china toys, they died sooner than expected.

Was definitely more upset about the Furby than Ernie. Just because I used to have one of those and those models are definitely the more sought after of the litter. But hey, all in the name of science baby.
Yes because I think he survived, he just had to rest for a month after that. I named the furby Luca and he is a sleepy pink Furby. Those furbies cost so much money so that's why Luca being on high voltage is a bad idea.

How did you make the sound distorted? Did it just happen because of a high voltage or you did something else to it before to make it louder?
It just happens at high enough voltage, most of the time it happens right before the chip burns out completely and can be hard to dial in without destroying it. This is especially true for most newer toys with everything integrated in a single chip (those black blobs on the pcb). Older stuff generally lasts over a wider voltage range
@@Cskirt I like the fact that at 6:35 you can actually see that the chip has completely molten as there's holes in it. Also about those toys that can last a wider voltage range. That Fisher Price toy you destroyed, is literally far more high-tech than any other toys in this video (except for the Furby) so obviously it still played at 15 volts. It may a black blob, but the audio amplifier and motor driver are separate chips. The blob was just a processor and it likely had voltage regulation before it. Truly a toy built to last, not surprising as it's meant for little children who do all sorts of things with them and beat them around.
