- While watching E.T., Chandler’s friends discover that Chandler can’t cry and are on a mission to find something that will make him tear up. They show him old photos from his childhood, but that didn’t work. Chandler wanted to know if a sad story from the book ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ would make him cry, but Monica catches him reading. She tries to trick Chandler by telling him it’s ok if he can’t cry and talks to him about their future together at their wedding, when their child is born, and when she die, but nothing works.

Am I the only one who gets sad context related to Chandler's inability to cry?
He had a harsh childhood linked to his parents toxic marriage and divorce. He didn't experience parental love, he faced romance rejections all his life. He often used humour as a defense mechanism when he feels tensed, nervous or sad.
He cried only when it comes to his friends: Ross and Rachel patching up, when Ross buys Phoebe a cycle, when he proposed, and when Ross says he wants both Joey and Chandler as best men.
For Chandler, his friends are his family.

Another edit: just saw couple of comments I found laughable. The idea that " _men showing emotions/feelings or crying is loss of masculinity or jackass_ " is as ancient as Harappa civilisation. If you stand by that then in the name of Monica Geller, "you're dead inside."
Another edit: men can cry all they want, its a human emotion. Period!
Zombies are more humane than men☕️ who still argue that "crying is inversely propotional to masculinity."

Very well put. I think that some people, when they struggles so much in life, crying becomes harder to do because that’s all you ever feel deep inside, that it becomes meaningless, so instead, you have no emotion, no expression but indifferent.
I love how Joey looks offended that Chandler didn't cry over Bambi's mother.

what I don't think any of them get is that his childhood was so screwed up he just built up a tolerance to crying of course ross and rachels relationship is so sad and toxic it made him cry his eyes out

As someone who is also ‘not a crying kinda guy’, I completely got this! Yes I can feel sadness, I just don’t really cry.
It’s a defence mechanism for those that are the same. The only real issue I have is that, when in a situation that crying would be acceptable, I laugh instead, it’s not that I find the situation funny, it’s just what I assume is my emotional defence system kicking in and counteracting it.

Being at a funeral and having to bite down on your tongue so hard to cause enough pain in order to stop yourself from laughing, despite the feelings of grief and sadness you have on the inside, leaves you feeling like absolute c**p.

I think the one where ross gifted Phoebe happens after this season.
And maybe he only cries for his friends, not on fictional story per se, because he build an emotional connection to them.
After this episode some event (I don't remember which) makes him cry and after that he cries at every little thing like a crybaby because all his emotions just start working and that's why he cries at those events that yu mentioned

There's nothing wrong with not crying.
He cried in the vet's office (s4e22).
Phoebe made him cry (s4e14), which was then recanted (s5e14 Uncut).
He then cried when Ross gave Phoebe her first bike (s7e9). And then again when Rachel left for France (s10e16).

Honestly Chicken Soup for Soul books are pretty good only if you find the title that you really connect with.
And to think he could barely get through their proposal because he was crying!
I've never been able to get into this show, but the highlight reels are great.

that's ET .. great movie ... Chandler and Monica make a real good couple on and off stage ..
I kinda get Chandler, though. When I was a kid, the big sad movie moment that made all the kids cry was Mufasa's death in Lion King. I didn't cry or get upset. I saw it as just another part of the movie. But for me, that's because I always manage to separate a movie from reality in my mind, even when I was a kid. It's like this barrier in your mind that separates the fictional story you're watching on the screen from the events of real life.
A similar reaction to what Chandler says here, sarcastically: 'Yes, it was very sad when they stopped *drawing the deer.*' I never get sucked into a movie or book's story deep enough for emotions to affect me that deeply. Some people get emotionally involved in the story and some see it as just a fictional work of art. Neither side is right or wrong. It's just a part of who you are.
