- You might’ve heard of Brown County, Indiana, but wondered what all the talk was about! In a very real way, Brown County is a smaller version of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with entertainment, shopping, restaurants, and plenty of outdoors! This film covers all the basics: things to see, things to do, and did I mention it’s the home of Bigfoot, and the Hoosier version of Stonehenge? Come along for an adventure, to Brown County!

I’ll say it again, Roger, museum grade films! I have always adored Brown County! So much that my wife and I got married at the Abe Martin Lodge! Glad to see you back here again and keep up the good work!
Thank-you, Ethan! It took me three trips, but I finally got light in the right places! 😃 When I make these films, I try to capture what a great day looks like. I want to remember a perfect day, and feel a responsibility to people that used to visit these places, but no longer can. It keeps me going!
Another fabulous video of the great state of Indiana. My wife and I are from Lawrence County. My wife saw The Statler Brothers, Reba, and The Oak Ridge Boys before it burned. While I was in the Navy, I flew with Charlie Pride from Chicago to Bloomington IN. He was going to "Little Nashville " Opry in Brown County.
Great memories! I bought tickets for a friend and his wife to see Martina McBride, at the Little Nashville Opry. But, I never made it down before it closed! I was always into getting pizza, doing the alpine slide, and Christmas shopping for unique gifts. Brown County has been a big part of my life! 🙂
I have lived in Brown County for the majority of my life. I worked at the Bill Monroe Campground when I was 16 or so with my grandfather, W.M Bentley and went to various festivals there. I also worked at Hobnob back in '03. Spent ten years of my life behind the line making meals for the patrons. Some of the homes in Nashville are so old that they have gunholes in the walls incase of someone attacking the home.
That’s some great personal history! I started going to Brown County around 1988. I miss the Dillinger Museum, alpine slide and original Sunshine Inn, that was on the second story of the building on Main. Lots of great memories!
Love Brown County! My daughter, granddaughter and I have been going for years to the Chocolate Walk there sponsored by the Brown County Humane Society every year. They’re a wonderful organization. We always stay at Iris Gardens. The owners are great people! And they have a gem store where the you can mine for crystals. Thanks for the great video

We love Brown County. It’s been a few years since we have been. This makes us want to go back.

I wish the Dillinger Museum was still around. It was one of my favorites to visit.
I remember it at Nashville! I actually tried to track down where the exhibits went. They travelled all the way to the northern part of the state, closer to Chicago, where people were better acquainted with mobster stories. But the museum didn’t get much traffic, and was closed there as well. As far as I know, all of those great exhibits are in storage somewhere, with an uncertain future.
It's such a cozy place. When people say Indiana is boring and flat, I point them towards Brown County.
I lived in Greenwood for over 30 years, have loved all of Southern Indiana for the hills, hollows and limestone!
I lived in Peru, where it is ‘flat’ or so everyone thinks. The Wabash Valley anywhere in the state is absolutely beautiful. I love my home state and its natural beauty!

Excellent job on this travelog. I miss annual trips down to Brown County. I was planning on spending some time in Brown County this summer but I'm afraid that is not happening anytime soon. I just got diagnosed with cancer and am taking chemotherapy treatments. I enjoyed the vicarious, virtual trip to the area, though. Such videos as this lift my spirits. I will have to buy you some coffees when I feel better.

My inlaws lived there in a couple of homes off the beaten path. It was nice to know the back roads when the main roads got crazy busy in the Fall. The park and the lodge were great to stay at too. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

Brown County Resident here! Born and raised. I love my hometown. My family has been settled here since the 1850s. I work in the bookshop down in the town called Fallen Leaf Books. A lot of people say it's like visiting a small English village or make the Gatlinburg comparison. Whatever it is that keeps bringing people here, I never take for granted how lucky I am to live here. ❤
Brown County will always have a special place in my heart, especially around Christmas! Shopping while big snowflakes drifted to the ground, and then a carriage ride with my girlfriend at the time. Precious memories!

Brozinnis is the best pizza in town. I worked there a few years back. Worked at Big Woods Pizza too back when they first opened.
I can remember riding around in my grandpa's Studebaker (convertible) when the Park still had gravel roads. My Auntie C used to manage the Abe Martin Lodge for years. I could really bore you with all the stories I have about Brown Co. All my Dad's side of the family lived and still live there. But you're the storyteller so I'll leave it there. Good stuff. PS Jerry Garcia once played at Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Festival....ok, I'll stop.

Brown County is where my mother's family was from... My Mom's relatives are Frazier and Morrison...
My great aunt,(Blanche Frazier) lived in a genuine log house just down the road from Bean Blossom and Gnawbone... Really true... Nothing is left except strip malls and motels ....Sad how things are not the same as when I was a kid....😢
Everything changes over time, even us. My Mother grew up in the country, where they started out like pioneers: wood stove, water from the spring, washboard for washing clothes, outhouse, no indoor plumbing or electricity. I thought that would be awesome, simple living! She said, “I wouldn’t go back for anything. Modern is good!” 😂

Thank you for sharing! My husband took me there once but I didn't get to see that much of brown county with the shops. Hills are beautiful! He took me to lots of places around indiana and I love it more than Michigan thus so far, it's been a great experience being here.

I am hoping you mention the mountain biking scene here. This area is getting very exciting for that.
I mentioned the 37 miles of mountain bike trails in Brown County State Park, but didn’t have a mountain biker to talk to. For sure, I didn’t see any ads or signs promoting it, and there should be!

A few years ago I went to Spring Mill for “Christmas In the Village”, and it was legitimately one the most special things I’ve experienced for years. A very feel-good evening with lots of nice people, sharing music and the spirit of Christmas.

Around Christmas, with just a little snow, it's magical! I remember Christmas shopping, and riding a carriage as large flakes fell to the ground: unforgettable!
My family went to the Brown County Inn for Mother's Day this year and had a great time shopping after. It's always funny to me how Nashville is treated as a tourist destination by people who live in surrounding counties. I know people who rent a log cabin for the weekend, and they only live 20 miles away! It's an incredibly beautiful place. Word of warning, if you want to just wander on the backroads, you WILL get lost. Lots of dead ends and roads that don't connect as you expect. Also, there are many cellphone dead spots! There are very few gas stations in the area, so make sure you have a full tank. My dad lives off of SR 135 S, outside Freetown, and I have gotten lost at least 3 times when there are detours around bridge construction. InDOT does not do a good job indicating or creating detours in the area I will happily take backroad detours anywhere but in Brown County. It is definitely not a grid like other counties try to maintain. Gorgeous place to be lost, but I do not recommend it
My GPS has went crazy many times in southern Indiana’s hollows! I always have a DeLorme Gazeteer in the car, but sometimes even it isn’t any help, as not EVERY road is detailed. My wife believes I must have a full-time guardian Angel! 😃
I carry a good, ole paper map. In both of my vehicles, at all times. Never lets me down. LOL.@@AdventureswithRoger
Living in Southern Indiana, just 23 minutes from Kentucky, I always have maps of both in the car. Not only will GPS occasionally fail, you often don’t see the big picture without a physical map. Not to mention, a good DeLorme points out features that GPS often doesn’t, namely historic sites, points of interest, museums and geographic features. No 100% substitute for a map!
I live here in Brown County so I have a map of the county in both vehicles plus state maps. The state maps are not detailed enough to navigate the county. I worked for the US Census in 2020 and that was the best job ever! I got to explore the nether regions of the county and ignore all the "No Trespassing" signs. LOL. Saw some incredible places and vistas and met lots of wonderful people. I love studying maps and, yes, you get the "big picture" with a map. 🙂 I also travel doing art shows all over the country and I always have hard copy maps. @@AdventureswithRoger

My pleasure! I’ve been to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Brown County, and can say the latter is the least congested. Unless it’s peak leaf color time, and then it’s bumper to bumper! If a person gets a good place to stay, some restaurants they like, books some shows, and spends the rest of their time browsing the many shops, and exploring nature, it should be a good time all around. Not too far down the road, at West Baden / French Lick is the casino, and about 35 minutes from there: Holiday World, Lincoln Boyhood Memorial, and all of the showcaves. Just a really great area! 🙂

A unique and beautiful county... I grew up in Floyd county, Indiana... and the natural beauty of the Floyd Knobs (Big Hills to those not familiar with the term!) is hard to rival in Indiana... but Brown county does for sure.
For many people that live in central Indiana, Brown County is their first exposure to “Southern Indiana”. I grew up just south of Indianapolis, and used to drive to Brown County for pizza, Christmas gifts, and the alpine slide (now long gone). Lots of beautiful country, and a great way to ditch the city! 🙂
We love old covered bridges!
I’ve filmed every single historical covered bridge in Southern Indiana, and can tell you that the Bean Blossom covered bridge, hands down, has the scariest road going to it, from the south. It was all gravel, very steep, and the wheels were sliding as I drove it. I must’ve had a guardian Angel, that kept me on the road. Lesson learned: always visit that bridge from the north!

The wife and I have spent quite a lot of time down in Brown County over the years either camping or staying in one of the cabins in the state park. I'm with you on Brozinni's Pizza, it is as good of pizza that you will find anywhere IMO. Also have eaten quite a few dinners at The Hob Knob. Brown County State Park is truly an amazing place, so much to see and experience. We're headed back down there in late August as we rented a cabin from Hills 'o Brown cabin rentals. Really looking forward to that!
Brozinni’s is awesome! Do you remember a place called “The Sunshine Inn”? It was a tiny pizza place, second floor of a place on Main Street / 135, back around 1988. Man, that was also good pizza! I took friends, dates, anyone that would go, just to get that pizza! The place burned down, and they moved to the center of town in a much bigger place, but lost something. Which was a shame, as they were incredible.
@@AdventureswithRoger No, I don't remember that restaurant. Seems I remember a pizza place out of off 46 just east of town towards Columbus in the strip behind the McDonalds. Wasn't near as good as Brozinni's but wasn't too bad. Some friends and I would ride motorcycles down there every Fall, and stay a friend's uncle's cabin on 135 towards Story. We would always eat at that pizza place the first night we were there. Good times!
I wish they still had the alpine slide at SkiWorld. THAT was really something!
@@AdventureswithRoger Never did the Alpine slide, we did ski down there though in the late '70's and early '80's. We first went when it was called The Nashville Alps before it became Ski World. BTW, there was another ski slope that opened about the same time as Nashville Alps, it wasn't as far out of town on 46 as Nashville Alps was, and it didn't last more than a year or two at the most. I can't remember the name...

I am honored to educate you! 😄 An elephant ear is a huge slab of dough, pressed flat, to about 12 - 14 inches across. They are then deep-fried to a golden brown, then sprinkled with tons of sugar and cinnamon. If you’ve had funnel cake, it’s basically the same thing, different geometry. SO GOOD. 🙂

I have never seen the pioneer village in action. We have also not visited in the summertime. We usually go in the winter. I wish some of the core souvenir shops were open in the winter. I'm sure a few have been but most things seem to be closed in the off season. Also, have you ever visited the Holly Shop when it's open? That is one that we hope to enjoy when visiting. I have never seen it open but again I have not visited in the right season perhaps.
My favorite Brown County shopping moment: coming down before Christmas, to buy my Mother a stained glass piece of art. It started to snow big flakes, the smell of cinnamon and chocolate in the air, simply wonderful!
Hello, Brown County resident here. In the last few years BC has been making strides to keep the shops open year round and have started quite a few winter/Christmas events. December is a great time to visit and get some unique gift shopping in. Before many of the shops closed because people weren't coming down, but now that more and more people want to shop small and get out of the big cities for their holiday shopping, many of the shops are making efforts to stay open at least through December. Jan/Feb is our slowest time of the year.
I think we should re-introduce black bears. I talked with a lady from the DNR and she said that if they wanted to come back they would. She was saying that perhaps we don't have the environment for them anymore. If I'm not mistaken most of them were killed way back. Not sure if that has to do with the environment. It would have more to do with that there were no regulations back then.
If I heard right, the last Native black bear was shot at Shoals, Indiana. They now call it “bear hill”. Several have passed through Indiana over the last several years, via Kentucky. One was even hit by a car, in Floyd County, and scampered off.
While black bears usually don’t bother people, they can. There are so many houses and housing additions in southern Indiana, where their habitat used to be, that it could be a bad scene for both bears and kids.

No mountains. Knobs! 😄 Until I moved to Southern Indiana, I’d never heard of knobs used as a synonym for very tall hills.
Brown county looks awesome! But Gatlinburg is in TN
If you live in central Indiana, you can experience something very much like Gatlinburg, without driving all the way to Tennessee. I used to live just south of Indianapolis, and could get there in about 35 minutes.
Brown county state park is a neat place to visit. I hope they are doing a better job at controlling the deer. Last time I was there the deer were over populated and we’re destroying the entire ecosystem. Otherwise it’s a beautiful place to visit.
I didn’t see a single deer, the last two times I visited Brown County. There have been numerous sanctioned hunts.

I'm sorry but Brown County, Indiana is nothing Like Gatlinburg. And it is only closer to home if you actually live in Indiana.

Proximity. This channel is about Indiana travel and folklore, told by a lifelong resident Hoosier. No matter if you live at South Bend or Clarksville, you can drive to Brown County a lot faster, than Gatlinburg,Tennessee.
Attractions. Hiking, shopping, cabins, live shows, horse trails, restaurants, museums, art galleries, hilly terrain with great vistas, shops that sell candy and other tasty delicacies: all the same but on a much smaller, easier to digest scale.
What Brown County doesn’t have, is all the touristy go carts and side show style attractions, that many people don’t care about. A person can still get those, just down the road at French Lick (indoor go carts, miniature golf and 1980’s style video games), Santa Claus (an equivalent to Dolly Wood), or Corydon (an equivalent to The Lost Sea).
