I remember reading an article during that time when he was tearing it up, where he mentioned his training philosophy. He talked about how he increased his training workload as the season progressed. He made it sound like as his teammates would take it easy and pace themselves throughout the season, he’d ramp it up and just workout all the time because he thought it’d give him some physical edge towards the end of the season.
Remembering back to that article, I wonder if he made it harder for his body to recover by putting it under such physical stress without time to recover before his injury. I mean why else couldn’t he recover fully from surgery after a couple months at 26? And then the recoveries became longer, and then he regressed so much in 4 years that he’s out of the league.

Little known fact- The game that Gilbert got his first meniscus injury by Gearld Wallace, Gilbert was actually late to shoot around because he overslept so then Head Coach Eddie Jordan had Gilbert come off the bench that game as a disciplinary move. Which is why he was in the game that late in the first quarter when he’d normally be on the bench.
What if he had shown up to shoot around on time? Maybe he’d still be dominating the league today…

Story is similar to D Rose in a way. Both top level talent who continued to have knee problems and never were able to reach their true potential. Both are two of my favorite players just because of their personality but D Rose was able to bounce back and still a solid nba player and can be an above average starting guard or 6th man

I only saw Arenas play in one, maybe two games. Undoubtedly, he was very explosive when getting to the rim and a very good scorer in his prime. I think based on this video package, part of the decline was the knee injuries, and yes, the gun incident played a role. I do wonder, though, if Arenas had better people training him in his rehab, plus Arenas himself evolving his game, if he still would have produced consistently on the court while remaining relatively healthy. I think you need the right rehab and evolving of your game to succeed after a knee injury, but, like I said, I didn't see Arenas play that much, as he was on some bad teams, so there could be more to the story.

My favorite Arenas moments where when he hit either back to back game winners or 2 in less than a week and he was so cocky he knew it was going in he turned around and put his hands up to celebrate before the ball even went in. Now THAT is cold blooded!
