The Forte is Kia's entry into the subcompact market to compete against the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus (dead), Chevrolet Cruze (dead), Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3. This Kia is identical mechanically to the Kia Soul which is new for 2020. Some of the notable features are:
2.0L NU Hyundai/Kia inline 4 cylinder engine
Kia's first continuously variable transmission (IVT)
Port Injection only
Integrated oil/pump in the timing cover
Variable intake manifold and charge motion sensor
Electronic thermostat
Rear torsion beam suspension
Overall the Kia Forte is a decent entry mechanically speaking, with good build quality for the price of the vehicle. Notably the layout of everything underneath the hood is identical to Toyota products.

Great vid man
It's Awesome I'm loving these videos!
Please do the mechanical review for Kia Stinger 2.0. I like your mechanical reviews. Thank you 👍
most excellent review
Please do a mechanical review of the XV50 Camry with the 2.5L 2AR-FE engine, or the 3.5L 2GR-FE V6
Please don't stop doing these! They're unique on UA-cam and I learn so much from them. Thank you.
Thanks I'm glad you could learn from them.
I'm just figuring out how to shoot these fast enough and get the right cars.
Lots of rubbish talking about soft feel door trims and BS cup holders on the rest of what they call reviews on UA-cam ( paid I reckon ) keep it going brother 👍
Fully agree
“Kia gives you these hooks to easily replace the engine when it fails just after warranty”. 😂
Man I love your videos and sense of humor, keep up the amazing work. This is a real review of cars.
Would you be able to review the 2019-20 Toyota Yaris? People say it’s a Mazda in disguise and it’s not as reliable.
Thanks.
Thanks I'm glad you appreciate my work and the little humor!
The Mazda 2 is sold as the Yaris in North America. A new Yaris hatchback has debut, I'd love to check out that little 3 cylinder haha
@@speedkar99 What? a Mazda 2 is a Toyota Yaris in North America?
funny part was you will have 2-3 engines replaced BEFORE warrenty is up as there 4 cyls are complete shit thanks to lack of oil lubrication wich causes main bearings to melt and burn up.
@@Scypher0th Fake news.
Jared Shelton not. It’s a known Hyundai/Kia issue.
I like the way you explain engines. It's the first time someone explains an engine from the point of view of a mechanic. Great!
I LOVE these reviews, your truly a gift to society. We need you. Seriously this helps so much your break down on the mechanics of how these cars are structured and work
Thanks I appreciate your feedback!
I think these mechanical reviews are awesome. My car got in a front-end collision, so I appreciate how you evaluate the design from that perspective. As a mechanic, you probably see a lot of front-end damage. The insurance company said that my car was a total loss (it's old), but I got it repaired.
Thanks, I think all of us mechanical minded people appreciate something like this. What car did you crash and fix?
I Absolutely love your channel. I love these mechanical reviews even more! Thank you for the amazing content! I look forward to more of these mechanical reviews.
I like what I see with this Kia. Not overly complex and lots of room in some areas. Just nice, simple transportation.
That's exactly what is is. A to B car with wireless charging, Android carplay, heated seats and steering wheel. No one really appreciates what's underneath and that's where they make it simple to cut costs.
Love the video. Same layout as my 17 Elantra. I wondered about the way the engine compartment was setup. Very good info, Keep it up! I love knowing parts of the car and how they're put together. Mine has the 6spd not the CVT. I had a Kia Spectra and that was a good beater car I used for 4 years. You can see the quality of their cars change; From the Sofia to the Stinger, wow that's evolution.
Great video, and this is the third I've seen after the 2004 vs 2019 Camry and the 2019 Corolla mechanical reviews. It's similar to what Savagegeese does with his In The Shoppe segments, but this has more of a mechanic's bent. Keep doing these; I'd love to see more.
Agreed. I wish SG could go in more details in his shoppe segments.
Remove the alternator & the water pump takes 15min to replace. I love that Hyundai does not extend the subframe; if you have to remove or replace the gearbox/transmission you don't have to suspend the engine and lower the subframe first. It's a 3 hour job, literally.
Love your reviews! 👍!👍!👍!
Love your mechanical reviews. Very informative. No one else does this. I can comparison shop on the competitors & make informed decisions. I’m now subscribed. ❤️
Thanks. You are right, I want to show you what others don't.
Best review ever! Automotive journalists should be learning from you!
Thanks. Maybe one day I'll be a journalist of my own.
I love your mechanical reviews! Keep them coming!! Thanks!!
You are welcome
Finding the flaws really caught my attention, thanks!
True. I try to nit pik sometimes to show things that people don't normally pay attention to
This should be watched by every car buyer. Please make more videos!!
I sure will! Once the pandemic is over 😒
I love these mechanical review videos.
Can you do the Honda 2.0 and 1.5T next?
Yes I really want to get my hands on a Honda with a turbo!
Yes please!
I really appreciate your work and knowledge it’s amazing to see videos like this,, of course all of them are from your channel ! Can’t wait to see another toyota ! Hopefully tacoma or even land cruiser
Excellent video! Particularly loved the reference to the handy hooks to pull out the engine just after warranty 😁😝
Haha
I was surprised they include those hooks, especially since they usually lift the engines into the body during production and don't use those hooks.
I love our current Kia Sedona. We bought it as a temporary solution after our 2016 Escape was totaled after hitting a Moose. It has been super reliable considering the steep hillsides and mountain passes we have driven it through here in Alaska. The previous owner drove it up the Alcan and had a hard life - still does, maybe moreso. We decided to keep it and has been going strong for 2 years now with just basic maintenance. I would totally buy a new Hyundai/Kia product.
Great video. Maybe in about 3 years you can have a long term review with same format to show what's been gone right and wrong. Especially CVT. Every big manufacturers using it these days with big doubts.
A long term review would be good. Maybe a 10 year old one...compared to a 10 year old civic/Corolla
I have a base model 2019 Kia Forte. I really enjoy it. The Mexicans did a great job building the engine and transmission, as well as assembling it in Mexico. I have a better understanding of my 2019 Kia Forte thanks to your professional, understandable explanation! Thank you, and I subscribed!
I'm glad it helped you understand. How are you liking that CVT? I found it kinda sluggish.
@@speedkar99 It is not sluggish at all, just give it some gas and you are at 0-60 in 2 seconds. The CVT is very responsive and fast! I am disappointed in your response, though. It is hear-say, but you need to try it.
@@99900062 neither a Corvette , nor a Porsche , can do 0 to 60 in 2 seconds. You are a Huge exagerater!! Lol.
@@johnfranklin5277 the actual 0 - 60 is high 7 low 8 ish
@@610smoke I know lol, I have a 17 Elantra! Lol. Same engine. Great car. 80.000 miles now, bought it new. Absolutely flawless, 0 repairs, 0 issues, but a rocket its not!
Love this style of video. Keep them coming. Would also be happy to see previous generation models in the same style, so non-Pros can better understand the difference between model generations.
Thanks. Comparison videos are great, though filming it means double the work haha

Just subscribed!! This is just the type of videos that I use UA-cam for....thank you!
Thanks
Thanks for helping people understand cars beyond the metal. Thumbs up!
Glad you understand and appreciate
Love these mechanical review videos. Would be interesting to see a review of a German car (like a VW Golf) to see how the engineering compares to the Asian brands.
Your wish has been granted! I just filmed a VW GTI this weekend. See my Instagram/Facebook for updates.
Reckon it would be shit-house....
I bought a 19 Forte with a 6 speed manual. I chose it because of its low price, long warranty, and ease of service. It's simple mechanically, but has a lot of amenities such as lane keep assist and Android auto. I'm pretty happy with it.
I agree, seems pretty easy to work on, the layout is like a Toyota
How much?
@@erikmireles5879 mine was 16,500 new at the time when I bought it. I believe they're even cheaper now.
@@n8rev156 thanks for the reply, the price, looks ok enough and warranty are appealing for a daily driver and keep the wear n tear off my truck. Haven't actually went to the dealer but lsx models are about $14k 0% apr around here
Love your videos. I would love to see you detail a modern day Mazda like this! Thanks!
Yep I sure want to get my hands on a zoom zoom
Absolutely brilliant reviews! Keep them coming
You are welcome!
Excellent, in depth review. I haven't seen anyone else go into such interesting details. Thanks for sharing ! Could you do the Kia Stinger GT Limited next ?
Stinger! That would be awesome
Nice review really appreciate it. I like how you talked about how it would have been nice if there was an inch more working room on one side of the engine compartment.
An inch more helps alot 😉
Oh man, those flawlessly delivered BMW and blinker fluid jokes near the end... haha
Really love these reviews! Please do more!
Glad you appreciate my work! What other cars you want to see?
Amazing vid man. Congrats and keep up the great work. Great knowledge.
Thanks!
Would love to see reviews of an 86 and Miata some day! Love your work!
Yes those are great suggestions! Thanks
Man you need more views! This vid is great
I wish I could get more views so more people can see what they really are buying under the hood and appreciate what engineers and mechanics work with alike
I can confirm, my blinker fluid is dripping
RIP turn signal
Better call chris fix he has a ton of blinker fluid in his garage and supply is running low because of covid19
Wow this is so cool of a video, as a ME this was cool to see this kind of content. Thinking about a Kia forte to work on. Still doing my research right now.
I'm an engineer as well, I find this things interesting too
Outstanding .... All I needed to know about buying Forte GT Line , Great Job , Thanks...
You are welcome
I’m glad I’ve came across this video🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉Taught me a lot of things abt my 2020 kia forte GT-line
Glad it helped.
great review! Will you do for Kia Forte GT turbo 1.6 201hp ? Would be awesome!
Great video! One question, where is the fuel filter located and how is it changed?
Hi speedkar99. I'm so glad to find your channel showing the intricacies of the vehicle. My daughter is shopping for her 1st car and we are seriously considering this car based on the price value and also the fact that the motor has a timing chain rather than a timing belt. I am a bit taken back with the fact that pretty much all manufacturers are going the way of the CVT which to me has been a headache and very problematic. (Nissan cough...) I looked over the new corollas and was shocked that Toyota too has changed over to CVT, sheesh. So now we are not sure which way to go. Choose the normal 2.0 with a timing belt but a CVT trans or go a little more with the GT with a 1.6 turbo (No knowledge of the motor) but with a proper dual clutch. If you can somehow shed some light on this it would be much appreciated. Also you've got a new subscriber!!!
The 2020 Forte FE comes in manual also! Which I personally think is better for young people (harder to text and drive) and the trans will be much stronger and easier to work on imo
Great video love it. Question where do you install block heater cause I can't find anything anywhere. I live in Canada and it gets cold last year I actually needed to boost for my cat twice cause it was so cold
Kia engineering is actually quite impressive. US auto makers could learn from them !
Awesome great video. The first instructional video. Well made. Love Kia.
Thanks. More to come when the lockdown eases
You Sir, are the Dr. Of Mechanics.
I'm an engineer not a mechanic lol
Great stuff as always
Keep up the good work !
Thanks
Question, would it be possible to swap out the Halogen Head Light Assembly in the Fe model, for the Higher Trim LED Headlight assembly? They appear to be plug & play.
Question, how can you tell the engine uses a timing chain? I’m reading a mix of belt and chain every place I look online. Thanks.
THAT was really well done!! Right on Man! :-)
How do I know which coil is 1 and which one is 4? I have a misfire in engine coil #4 and don't know which one it is that needs to be replaced.
I think the reason why they want to just replace the transmission instead of attempting to repair it is since it's Hyundai/Kia's first CVT, the failed units would be sent back as is and then torn down for studying.
Good theory
How hard would you say it is to swap a rear seat? I'm looking to buy a base manual but I really want a rear folding seat.
Nice . Very informative i hope kia see this video .To improve where needed in this video 👍
Thanks, they sure have come a long way.
Hey, those engine hooks on my 07' Kia Rio came in handy when I replaced my clutch 😎 I used a pulley to support the engine and trans instead of a jack. My engine's still going strong with over 200K on the odo (and it's well out of warranty 😉).
Awesome. You are one of many on this video to testify the old Kia's are doing well
Cool! Old Kia's (before the Hyundai merger) used Mazda designed engines and transmissions built under license by Kia. Despite being somewhat unrefined, the cars are surprisingly solid and reliable. The post-merger cars are a definite improvement though.
Looking at buying a 2021 Kia Seltos with IVT, or a Mazda CX-5 which has cylinder deactivation. Which do you think is more trustworthy?
Sir, I have a 2016 kia forte lx and the vehicle is in the garage right because the steer won't turn so can you show me where the steering wheel tank is so I can put the fluid into it.
Nice bro I am grateful for your knowledge!
Waiting on mechanical review for the bigger brother Kia Stinger v6 3.3 liter 🙌
Thanks for the video! I have the 2020 version of this car. Would it basically be the same?
excellent tip at 10:56 and since you're there go ahead and remove the caliper and use a rust inhibitor on the hub/rotor (for those that drive on roads that get salted in the winter) so that your rotors aren't rusted on!!!!
Agreed. It's not just the rust...it's just those screws love to strip!
Hey you said to remove the screws so they don’t strip out before the first brake job, do you mean replace or remove?
Great information! Keep it up
Hi speedkar99, fascinating video review! Do you think you could review the Mazda 6 in the future?
Yes
Would love to see an updated one of these with the 1.6T and DCT
I love watching your videos. Is it still wise top service your transmission anyway?
Yes I would.
love the video keep the content coming
Thanks. Sure
What battery information can you give me for this car I need to replace mine? Thanks
Can you make a video for the 2019 kia forte ivt transmission fluid change? Thanks
wow , wow , you know your stuff like a surgeon .... well done sir thank you so much
I am a car surgeon. Check out the rest of my channel
Excellent overview job on that car
Thanks
do you have the repair manual for the kia forte? no owner manual, the complet service and repair manual?
Is there enough room at the bottom of the trunk to store a spare tire if you wanted to put one in there?
If you ever get an opportunity to a Honda Element review,Preferably a five speed manual 2 Wheel Dr. I’d really like to see that, keep up the great work love your videos ,all of them you’re from Canada whereabouts.
Thanks Mustang Joe. Instead of an Element I'd rather review a Mustang! 😁
The Mustang is my summer vehicle only the Honda element is my bulletproof winter vehicle
Thanks for these videos, with an aging Civic I'm starting to look for a cheap daily driver around $20k.... Good deals on both the Forte and Jetta, thanks to your videos alone (cupholders, handling, etc.) I feel the Forte is a much better built car (simplier to work on as well) than the Jetta.
Forte and Elantra are much better choices than the Jetta in terms of repair costs and long-term reliability.
@@palebeachbum kia reliable 😂🤣😂
@@adl6907 reading comprehension is not your forte. 😉
Great work!
first I would like to thank you for the work you do . but i have a question for you . would you recommend buying that vehicle ? the CVT give me a stomach ache. I don't care if it was Toyota CVT. even though . the new Toyota Camry is getting themselves into the junky electronics like the German brands does. ( Electronic water pump and thermostat ) something that i have learned watching your video on the old and new Camry.
I've leased a 2021 Forte (the last of the 2019 generation) and I'm trying to decide whether to buy it. When my lease is up, the mileage will be about 21k with my driving needs and it'll cost about 11,000. What do you think? Decent buy? Very tempted because I don't think I'll get that price for such a lightly used and newish car anywhere else.
I just bought a Forte LX, it's a great car, made in Nuevo Leon, Mexico
One major question , A STEEL STEERING KNUCKLE ? , as apposed to what ? There are composite one's??
amazing video!
Very informative. Can you likewise do a similar review for a 2020 Kia Sportage AWD ?
Yes. But thats the same engine isn't it?
Kia actually makes really reliable cars. I love my Forte Gt and had a 2014 Forte Koup before with no Issues
Really....I've heard hit and miss with them
They've had some serious issues with the Theta costing billions to fix and now it appears the electric cars are very troublesome.
Can you do one of these videos on the Kia Rio?
There are two red wires coming from pos+ part of the battery what does it connect to
I’ll admit Kia/Hyundai have some nice cars but keep anything with the CVT. Also I really don’t get why the ECU for cars needs to go under the hood. What happened to placing it behind the dash or beyond the glove box?
I have two Kia’s and my newest is ten years old, best cars I’ve ever had.
Great video, really appreciated
Thanks glad you like it!
Awesome thanks
How does the cooling system on Mercedes and BMW keep the coolant from boiling if the radiator doesn't have a cap and the coolant is free to flow back and forth to the reservoir, which has some empty space that can allow the coolant to expand and boil?
Isn't the cap built on top of the reservoir? The cap is there for safety too
Awesome reviews man! Your sense of humour is funny too Lol.
I own this car (except mine came with the crappy Gamma 1.6L engine). Very good points on your reviews. The most thing I like about this car is how easy it is to work on. Mine came with 6-speed automatic so it's somewhat serviceable and the 1.6L engine is even smaller than the one in your review and gives more clearance to work with.
I have a question and would be glad if you answered me. In the owner's manual it gives a chart for suitable oil viscosity according to the ambient temperature. According to the chart I can use 5W-30, 10W-30, or 15W-40. Shall I go with the thickest one to provide more protection for the engine? In my country the temperature rarely goes lower than -5 °C.
Thank. You have the turbo 1.6 eh.
The oil weights get thinner to reduce friction and this better fuel economy. In the winter you use thinner oil because it's viscosity changes with temperature. You'd be safe with what they spec for your climate, though it's not going to make ur engine "last longer" since the differences are more for economy.
@@speedkar99
Thank you for the reply. My car has the non-turbo 1.6L (same one in the Kia rio and Hyundai accent, 131HP) I think in Canada and the US they only sell the 2.0L and the turbo 1.6L. In my country it is even called Kia "Cerato" not "Forte" even though its exactly the same.
Perfekt like always
Always perfect
Champion, as usual
😁
Thank you Sir, more power to you.
You often mention the placement of the ECU and it's survivability after a crash. Wouldn't most crashes that intrude into the engine compartment a few inches total the car without needing to damage the ECU? My old 2010 Mazda 3 was totaled after it hit a curb at speed and damaged the suspention, there was no intrusion into the engine compartment.
where is the cabin air filter located ?
Don’t know if you’ll read this but my Forte has been shutting off a lot after taking it a to a shop to get some regular maintenance done and alignment. I believe it’s gotta be some sort of computer system failure as it’ll show I’m doing 60 while I’m barely speed limit and all my lights turn on as the car starts fighting itself to stay on, if that makes sense. I’m just trying to figure out myself what it can be but literally have no clue.
I need help I have these headlights but the four little pointy parts won’t work only the center lamp works
Those are the drl
I have this same engine in my Hyundai Elantra se. 2018 with the manual transmission. I really like the car. I have 53k on it. Change the synthetic oil every 4k. Trying hard to go to 5k but I'm old school. The motor sounds like it did when it was new. Its quiet. I get over 40mpg and haven't had any problems. Although I had it in for an oil change and they had to update the software on the thermostat. When its bitterly cold out it took like 20 minutes to get to normal temp. Now it takes 3 minutes. It's been a good car. I plan on driving it for another 200k.
4k on synthetic? Bro you're wasting money. At minimum theyre rated at 7k some up to 15k!
@@iyelawolf2196 I'm trying! I'm at 4,500k Mobil 1. Oil still looks good.
