I have a lovely wild collected California Juniper that is about 60 years old and I have it shaped and wired and in a shallow bowl type Bonsai pot, but the bark is rough and gray. It grew fast because of how big the pot was (that it was just in) allowing the roots to grow freely. If you want a thick trunk, plant your tree in the biggest pot you can find or just plant it in your backyard and it will look like that in 1 year.

Hi Houston, We created a shari on the trunk to hide the cut as well as accentuate the movement in the trunk. We also used a show trick for creating the red trunk by brushing the trunk with a wet toothbrush. Hope this helps! - Jason

TeeGeeOh never prune newly forming buds, only prune fully open needles and never take off foliage from branches you want to survive ,as they need foliage to move sap through branches.. prune to much and juniper will die.. thats all I got today, maiq is tired now😊
So one of my tiny branches died after some severe pruning. I got a little too eager because I can be somewhat impatient, but the lesson has been thoroughly learned. I just got my second bonsai and I purchased it from Eastern Leaf, it's beautiful! This is another question...I left the little branch on there for 2 weeks while it died to sort of use it for a gauge of how long it might take for a branch to die (or even the tree) due to some errant pruning mistakes. However, the rest of the tree received the same level of pruning, some branches of the same size, some bigger, but the tree as a whole seems to be flourishing. I really take good care of it and have done research in regards to watering, feeding, lighting, etc... Do you think I should be concerned about the rest of the tree even though the foliage is all still lush and green whereas the little branch died out very quickly? Can you wire a branch when it still is green before it turns into wood? The tree is about 6-7 years old. Thank you!
Are you in southern Cali or northern Cali. You are reporting and trimming in March. I'm assuming you're in northern California? I'm in Florida and need to take one out of the ground. It's February and I think its too warm. 60°/80°

The tree looks great, but isn't it scarred from the wires? What do you do about that? Mine has grooves on it from the wire being left on too long. It had wire on it for about 6 months, you said a year. Mines not as old as yours however.
HerbanLegend temperature can also be a factor, along with every tree growing different from one another. you can take comfort in knowing your work wasn't wasted in removing it to soon .. plus your bonsai is young so the scarring can heal over time with the growing of new bark.. 😊
That would be from a secret bonsai tool called a toothbrush. Typically before bringing a tree to a show, you can use a wet toothbrush to brush the trunk. This will give it that nice reddish brown color. But make sure you only do this to Junipers! :)
Hi Matias, Yes, that tree was trained when it was very young as well. However, sometimes you get lucky and you'll find a tree that might have some natural movement. :)

myromm well, if you can find someone interested in buying it, it could go for like 20$-**$ depending I guess in what type it is. Mainly, bonsai is for a hobby, as it is pretty relaxing. Hope this helped.
If you want to profit from bonsais then at the very beginning make a LOT of them. And continue on making new ones all the way as the earlier batches mature. Get creative with the landscapes. Do a lot of varieties with color, size, texture and shape to imitate a natural zen aesthetics and in five to ten years your work will worth thousands of dollars.

Do you advise waiting a year before potting nursery brought plants or can you pot them quite shortly after styling?

Hi. Yes, the secret solution is just plain water. Just give it a spritz on the trunk prior to brushing it. but only for Junipers! :)

Will not grow in full sun which most bonsai trees require. However most use it to cover soil for shows simply to hide ingredients like pumice
